Series 13/Chapter 12: FAMILY TREES

The Stoddards: Paul, Elizabeth, Beau, Cameron, Carolyn

Two days of overcast and grey weather buried Collinsport in frothy sea mists that went from shore to town and back again and would soon break into a wild storm in the sky above. It was a typical early afternoon in the New England fishing village, but one woman would come face to face with an element of her past that she long thought missing, a missing link to her existence would reattach itself to her heart, and it had been under her nose the whole time.

It had been a few days since Cameron's run in with Evangeline when she escaped her capture in the basement of the Old House. Cameron had no memory of the encounter and was thoroughly engrossed in moving on with his life after Noelle's death.

When he was finished packaging things from upstairs, he began to search the drawing room of the old house for items. The stroll through memory lane made an impact on him: for almost 20 years he had lived there with Noelle as she took care of Elizabeth in her old age. The home had been offered to them so that Noelle could come in and out of the main mansion and watch over Elizabeth with ease but also she could have her own space.

Now that both Elizabeth and Noelle were gone, Cameron knew that any day now he'd be asked to leave the home. He was being proactive. The family didn't know he was one of them, and at this point he didn't know if he wanted to tell them--or even be a member of the family.

There were countless little items left by his aunt, a woman he saw more of like a mother. Her reading glasses. Her little reminder notes for what she needed to bring the next day for Elizabeth. Her comfy slippers that sat by her favorite chair.

It was a gut punching reality that he had to do this. Pack up her things. It was killing him inside. A painful and final chapter ---she was really never coming back.

Then, there was a knock at the door.

Cameron first thought that it was Lucas coming back to plead forgiveness for going behind his back and working with Noelle to search the Mansion for evidence that they'd some how been responsible for his father's death.

Cameron sighed, annoyed at Lucas' tenacity to come back into his good graces, and went over to the door ready to shoo him away for good. When he opened it, he was shocked to see who was standing in the cool air of the November day illuminated with the brightness of the gray sky behind her.

His birth mother Carolyn Stoddard-Thorne.

"Mrs. Thorne!" Cameron exclaimed. "...come in, come in." Cameron continued, shocked to see his mother standing before him.

She wasn't alone. The family lawyer, Webber Garner was with her.

"How are you Cameron?" She asked truly concerned for his wellbeing after Noelle's death.

"Better. Well, better than I expected to be I guess. I've been sleeping like a baby--oddly." Cameron replied, as he unknowingly was still sleeping off the memory erasing spell Claudia Bouchard placed on him just days before.

"Sometimes when we're in mourning we sleep more. It's sort of a way of our bodies to block out the sadness. When my mother died earlier this month I was doing the same. I slept deep too." Carolyn added, lying to Cameron to make him feel he wasn't alone in his grief.

"What can I do for you? If it's about leaving the house, I've already started packing my aunts things. I should be out in a day or two." Cameron said noting the quiet family lawyer.

"Oh, no not at all. Please take your time. You were so kind to come and speak to me at my mother's grave that I thought it only right that I repay the kindness." Carolyn answered as she entered the drawing room

Memories of all her years there came flooding back. All the times she'd come and collect David when he was a child running around searching for Josette's ghost. All the times she'd come to see Barnabas when she still trusted him. When she still had no fear of who he really was.

The innocent times. The Innocent days.

She turned as Webber walked in behind her and saw Barnabas' painting still hanging on the mantle above the fire place.

"Oh." She said, swallowing hard.

"It's rather gaudy, I know." Cameron joked of the old painting not knowing its history.

"He was very...put together in life." Carolyn said of Barnabas still shrouding him in mystery despite knowing his monstrous side.

"You knew him? The real person?" Cameron asked.

"Yes." Carolyn said as she turned to Webber, trying to not get into the details of Barnabas Collins.

Cameron, noticing Webber too expressed a strange look, wondering who the man was.

"Our family attorney, Webber, is here only to give you this. It's a signed check from Collins Co. It's so that you know that the money my mother left your aunt will be given to you as her heir. I've also added an extra amount there for you Cameron. I know how much it hurts to be alone now. I don't want you to feel alone. We want to be sure you're taking care of. It would really hurt me to think you felt as if we were just casting you off like this now that all this tragedy has occurred." Carolyn said.

"I just need you to sign here and I can make sure the rest is taken care of." Webber added.

Cameron wasn't in the mood to discuss business or any matters of money any further. He shook his head and signed the paperwork that would eventually, in a day or so, give him all access to the inheritance Elizabeth left Noelle and the extra amount of funds Carolyn signed over to him for his troubles. As Cameron flicked through the pages he saw the extra mount...an extra $300,000. It was a huge amount.

"I can't accept that." Cameron said hesitating to sign the last page where he saw his portion of the money. "It feels like you're paying me off for some reason." Cameron replied. "Noelle's fall was an accident.......right?" He added

Carolyn sighed. "It was."

Cameron looked at the woman he knew was his mother, she didn't know the truth. But he wanted to believe her. He wanted to hear what she was saying and for it all to be the truth, and in reality he just wanted all of it to end. He wanted to gather the rest of his things and move on and move away and leave his Collins family connection behind.

And so...he signed the papers giving him Noelle's inheritance from Elizabeth and Carolyn's extra amount.

"There." Cameron replied underlining his name in the final signature box.

Carolyn smiled warmly. "Your aunt was a very important part of my mother's life and we want to be sure you're taking care of too. I'm sure that both amounts will help you on whatever path you choose." Carolyn replied.

Cameron was still in no mood to argue. Webber grabbed the signed paperwork and folded it into his briefcase.

"I'll have everything arranged." Webber then excused himself from the room and exited the Old House leaving Cameron and Carolyn alone.

Carolyn looked around the old house again for what seemed like hours but its as only a few minutes. She smiled at seeing some of the other decorations from Barnabas' time had survived all the years she had been away. She looked up again at the painting above the fire place. She shook  her head at his painted smirk.

He still stood looking over everyone no matter what. He was there. Always watching. Always staring down keeping a very hungry eye on the family he so loved and at the same time haunted.

"So? What was he like?" Cameron asked packing a small bag and noticing Carolyn staring at Barnabas.

She turned to Cameron and smiled. "Complicated. Loving. Loyal..." she giggled. "Diabolical too."

Cameron smiled as he zipped the bag up. "No, not the man in the painting. My father. What was my father like?"

Carolyn's face changed. Her heart skipped a beat. She began to feel her insides fill with butterflies because  she knew it the day she spoke with Cameron at the cemetery that something about him made her feel different. Protective even. Something in her body felt that she knew his face but in a different form, that his eyes were eyes she had seen and his hands were hands that she had held.

But in a different time. In a different way.

"Your father?" Carolyn replied trying to push Cameron to tell her what she had already began to feel.

"My father was Beau. I know that you knew him, my aunt told me you two were friendly back in the day." Cameron paused unsure of how to finish his reveal that he, was who he was....her son, instead blurred the lines of truth in the story.

"Cameron I..." Carolyn said interrupting.

"What was he like?" Cameron asked again.

"He was beautiful. Everything about your father was beautiful. He was smart. And funny. And ….I loved him." Carolyn admitted.

"You loved him." Cameron repeated just so he could hear it again.

"I truly did. Everything about him I loved. But in those years things were different. It was stupidly different, I admit, but the two of us had to follow rules; rules neither of us wanted to acknowledge but we had to. Society is a messy place, Cameron. I know that you know personally how hard things are to finally be yourself in a world that only wants to tare you down. Your father and I loved each other, we truly did. But in the end we couldn't be together. One way or another." Carolyn said drawing the true parallel between her fight to love Beau in public rather than in secret for being an interracial couple in the 1960's and Cameron's plight to be who he really was, out and proud in the 1990s.

"Do you know how Aunt Noelle came to be my guardian?" Cameron asked, testing Carolyn's knowledge and finally dropping a big hint of his identity.

Carolyn lifted an eye brow. She looked deep into his eyes. They were shaped like hers. They were her eyes looking back at her. The shape of his lips too. They were hers. She was seeing herself in Cameron. The hints were undeniable and she knew where his questioned were going.

This man, who was exactly the same age as the son she had with Beau and gave up for adoption would have been had she raised him herself. Then it came out....it came out of her mouth, like a light brightening the darkest room.

"Is it you? Are you who I think you are?" She added.

Cameron only looked at her as she began to connect the dots one by one. He decided to help.

"I was born in London in late 1966. My birth mother gave me up for adoption because she couldn't take care of me. My aunt, Noelle, found me. She adopted me herself. She told me, for years, that my father had died and that my mother had died. But it was all lie. Well, part of it. My mother had not died. She is living. She'd been in London all this time, and in fact, I was raised right where she had been raised. Its a messed up turn of fait, isn't it? We're sort of like all fighting to find ourselves and in reality here were facing each other. After all this time. All this lost time." Cameron said as Carolyn began to sob in front of him realizing he was her long lost son.

"I .... I don't know what to say." Carolyn said through a flush of tears.

Cameron walked over to her and grabbed her hand and squeezed it. Too much had happened. Too many deaths. Too many painful things were floating around them like ghosts, like banshee's screaming at the top of their lungs. There was a clear push and pull within the energy of the room. The good energy only wanted these two to to reunite, the bad wanted them to further the strain of a fractured and secret family.

Cameron smiled at her, showing her the good energy was winning---for now.

"It's ok. It's really ok. Ive had a wonderful life. Noelle really took care of me and raised me well. I just wish things were different. I wish that maybe I could have gotten to know Elizabeth better, or David or anyone really. You too. But, I can't complain. Life does that you know, it gives you what you can handle and nothing more. This was the way we were meant to connect." He said as she released a gasp of air from her lungs in relief and grabbed hold of him. Her son. Her beautiful long lost son.

"My son....my son!" She said still sobbing.

"So, what now?" He joked.

Carolyn pulled back from her boy, her mascara smeared all over her eyes and cheeks.

"I have to go back to London. You have a little sister there. You would love her. She would love you.  I have to go back but....Cameron you have to understand I can't come back here again. Aside from my mother and Noelle's passing, things have gone horribly wrong with David. I can't be here. Its too much for me. Its just too much...." she paused. "You can come with me. Come with me!" She yelped.

"And what? Live in London?" Cameron asked astonished at her idea. He knew it was too soon for all of them to just act like a happy family.

"You could!!" She said.

He shook his head no.

Carolyn, now seeing a second chance to be with the boy she gave up saw this as a start of a wonderful reunion. A relationship that she had been dreaming of since his birth.

The topic of David however would cause her to do what she hated most. Lie.  To protect David---again.

"You mentioned something is  horribly wrong with David. What's happened with him?"

Carolyn sniffled and began to backtrack. Noelle's death was supposed to be an accident. David's involvement had to be kept secret.

"He's ill. Very ill." She replied glossing over David's mental recklessness.

"I'm sorry to hear that." Cameron said softly, seeing just how stressed his mother was.

Carolyn smiled at him sweetly, satisfied that he didn't prod any further into David. Then she looked her son in the eyes and then he knew, she was never coming back. This was it. Carolyn Stoddard-Thorne, his birth mother, had no plans of ever returning to Collinsport.

As the two embraced one more time, Lucas had arrived to try and warm things over with his boyfriend Cameron. He had been watching the whole time. He had been listening the whole time.

He didn't interrupt. But he did plot.

The sound of Carolyn's saying she was returning to London made him grin ear-to-ear. He quickly went back to his car and drove off. He had new plans.  New plans for his own life.

Carolyn and Cameron at the Old House

At Windcliff, David sees a familiar face

The halls of a hospital 40 minutes away from Collinsport smelled of old furniture. It was the smell of mold and mildew, the smell of unwashed sheets and stale food. This was Windcliff. It had changed over the years. It wasn't the same hospital Julia Hoffman once worked herself to the bone in. It wasn't the same hospital she gave all her she knew and all she had in her.

Over the years, Windcliff was left to decay in the hallowed out building that looked more like a skeleton of it's former self than a functioning hospital for the mental disturbed.

The Chief of Staff, Dr. Joanna Grayson, could care less. She had another pay check coming her way all this time. A paycheck that linked her to The Organization of the True Hearted. A paycheck that would insure David Collins stayed put until his ultimate death.

As David was wheeled into the common area of the hospital he struggled in his chair. The meds he had been fed kept him loopy and confused, angry and volatile, the straight jacket that kept him snug in his space was proof of his wild outburst.

As he tried to get himself free, a feat he'd never achieve, a woman sitting in the back of the common room noticed him come in. She was sitting at a table pasting photos and shapes that had been cut for her by a nurse onto a large white poster board and David's entrance made a huge commotion in the room.

"SHUT UP! SHUT UP! SHUT UP!" Screamed a bald overweight man in a hospital gown and slippers from his table at David.

David, his face showing his exhaustion snarled back.

"Devils Devils Devils Devils Devils." Murmured another woman playing with a doll as David passed her.

"Alright sit here for a bit. Enjoy the light." The orderly pushing David said leaving him in his straightjacket and chair in the light of the widows.

"Devils Devils Devils Devils everywhere. Everywhere. Everywhere." The woman with the doll kept saying.

The first woman who was pasting the photos, looked at David again now that he was in the sunlight in the window.

She knew him.
She knew that face.

She had been at Windcliff since 1985. She had been hiding. Hiding herself. Hiding from her past. Hiding from a man who was crazy and hiding from all the things that made her frightened. She had been there before, many years before. As a young woman after she had been kidnapped. The hospital, Windcliff, made her feel this uneasy peace and safety even though inside those walls lives the volatile world of the insane. And yet....she felt safe there.

It had been years since she recognized someone, but this face, David's face, changed that. It was almost like her eyes were playing tricks on her. She hadn't seen him since he was in his teens. After she disappeared. No one knew she  was hiding there. No one. Not even the man she was hiding from.

The mysterious women walked over from her task of pasting the photos and stepped into the window's light where David was sitting tied up in his straightjacket. She knelt down to get a better look at this face.

He was groggy. Drugged. He wasn't seeing clearly but he opened his eyes to see this face.

"Fancy seeing you here." She said to him with a calm wink.

David, his eyes seeing a blurry figure in front him that had quadrupled because of the medication he was taking couldn't make heads or tails of who it was, but he recognized her too. But a name didn't click. Nothing clicked.

"Help me." he whispered to the familiar stranger.

She smiled at him and patted him on the shoulder.

"I guess it all got to you too honey. It was only a matter of time I guess. David?" the woman asked trying to get him to look at her. "David?" She said again trying to get his attention.

But he was just a drooling into his own medicated psychosis. He kept shaking, trying to get his way free of the straightjacket. He began to violently thrust his arms attempting to release them. He was shaking. Pulling. Shaking again.

"HEY! Get away from him! Back up!" An ordinary screamed at the woman.

"I wasn't doing anything." She said.

"Yeah sure you weren't. You're never doing anything. Back the hell up!" The cruel orderly shouted as the woman.

As she turned to walk back to her project, David looked up from his scrunched position in the wheel chair.

He saw her face clearly, but the medication began to blur his mind again. He managed to whisper "Maggie? Is that you?" to the woman.

She smiled a bright grin at him surprised at the name he called her, just as the Orderly pulled his chair back and started to move it to anther part of the room.

"Hey kiddo." She said softly but no ne heard.

"GET BACK ROSENBERG!" the orderly shouted at the woman calling her a different name.

David, still groggy looked at the woman called Rosenberg confused. It was Maggie Evan's face. He could see it clearly. But the name. Rosenberg? As David's chair was wheeled off, he kept looking back and the blurry figure he swore in his mind was Maggie Evans who had supposedly died 10 years earlier.

David whispered again "Maggie."

Victor and Kim in the Court-Yard

The next day the bubbling fountain in Collinwood's court yard dribbled and dripped in and out of tempo as Kimberly stroked her pregnant tummy and walked around the garden of autumn shrubs and plants. She had been feeling sick most of the morning and Carolyn had given her the idea of strolling around the outdoors to get some fresh air.

She hugged herself to keep the fall air from cooling her warm body ad adjusted the scarf around her neck. She took in a deep breath of fresh sea air from the courtyard, and when she opened up her eyes, Victor Reed was standing in front of her.

She gasped in fright as she did not hear him enter in through the locked gate.

"What are you doing here? Carolyn is home! She could see you." Kimberly said, her stomach feeling heavy and watery.

Victor lifted a suitcase up to his chest and patted it. "I've brought you something. It came from the Chancellor herself." Victor said.

"What is it?" She asked.

"Its something that will finally do what we've been talking about for months now. Its the one-stop-shop, tool to answers all your questions on how to finally rid the world of the vermin Collins family. The Chancellor has become inpatient so she' send this package along to me to give to you. Kim, this our ticket to freedom, all of us; this town, this world. It's a gift." Victor said, his eyes wide and some what frightening as he had been so brain washed by The OTH that he was too lost to bring back. And he wanted to take Kim to that spot too.

"Listen, Victor," the very pregnant Kimberly began. "I'm not feeling to well today and Carolyn is home I don't want to stir up trouble so close to David's departure to Windcliff. It's been a whirlwind these last few weeks, can't we just wait until the baby is born to start all this again?" Kimberly asked as she brought Victor to a hidden part of the courtyard under the shadows of various trees.

"Are you serious? This is the perfect time to finish the job Kim. This will do everything we've ever wanted. You actually don't have to do anything, you see this gift does all the work for you." Victor said as he grabbed her hand and dragged her back into Collinwood.

Kimberly began to panic. She didn't want Carolyn to see Victor and she certainly didn't want Carolyn to see Victor with her. Together. Holding Hands. Victor was now being reckless.

"Victor, come on, let go, stop this!" Kim said as his grip only tightened. "Victor! Please! You're going to get us caught. This House is huge but the walls are thin!" She said again, trying to release herself.

As they made their way through the crowded with shrubbery Courtyard, he pushed the glass door of a large room that was screened off patio that lead into the house. The pair of conspirators made their way into Collinwood and entered into the kitchen where the cook had the day off.

"What are you doing?????" Kimberly said, he forehead now beading with sweat.

"I have to show you what Chancellor Devlin sent me." Victor replied pulling out the package that arrived just hours before at his house from someplace where V.W. Devlin was in hiding.

The box inside the briefcase was wrapped in brown paper and had a lid on it that lifted easily. As Victor unwrapped the package that had even more white packaging paper protecting the gift inside, it slowly became visible to Kimberly who was beginning to feel the onset of a panic attack as her eyes gazed on what had been delivered to her.

She was clammy. Cold. She was feeling sweating and tired. Her blood pressure was high, she felt faint, but looking in the box she felt much worse. This wasn't just regular rush of hormones from her pregnancy. This was a true full on panic attack just from seeing what Victor was showing her.

It was a bomb.

"Jesus Christ Victor!" Kimberly said slapping his arm in shock.

"You see, this will finally make sure we're rid of this damn family forever. Every last one of them here in this town. Dr. Grayson will make sure David dies at Windcliff, and we'll take care of Alexandra in London when we go there next week. But now, this will end Carolyn and Caleb and this whole house! Its genius." Victor recounted.

"This is..... this is too much. I'm not feeling well and I can't even begin to tell you how this is not the time. Where am I to go if this happens? This is my home too." Kim replied to Victor's stern expression.

"This is your home? This is NOT your home! You made a vow to the OTH that you would help us kill every last member of this demonic family and you're going to do it. No matter what you are going to help me. Other wise we will have no choice but to make sure die too, and Kimberly, I don't want to do that. I don't want to do what they said for me to do to you if you bail on us. Do you know what that would mean?" Victor said, his eyes going cold as he grabbed on to Kimberly's hand tightly.

"No." She said frightened of his reaction.

"You don't want to know, because it is much worse that what we've done here to David or with this bomb. Its more painful. Its more deadly but it won't kill you for hours. You'll suffer. And you'll never see that baby again." he said pointing to her belly.

Just as he did, Kimberly grabbed at her stomach as a sharp pain came stabbing at her belly. She screamed with pain as she spread her feet apart allowing her water to break. Her sudden illness wasn't an illness at all, she was going into labor.

The baby was coming.

Victor looked down at the floor, the amniotic fluid was all over his and Kim's shoes. He finally was going to see his son. He finally was going to begin the second part of his plan with the child Kim was carrying.

"Oh my god!! OH MY GOD!" Kim screamed as her contractions started to thrust in her body, bone by bone, muscle by muscle. Pain by pain.

"Come on! Let's get you to the hospital!" Victor shouted. As Kim started to walk out of the kitchen, Victor quickly, with the slight of hand clicked the destination clock button to start and hide the box with the bomb under the kitchen table.

The clock rang the it was detonated and flashed a 24 HOUR countdown.

In the foyer, Kimberly was grabbing her purse as Victor rushed in, opened the front door and headed for his car that was stupidly parked out front. Carolyn and Caleb came down the stairs as Kimberly's painful screams lifted through Collinwood's rafters.

"What the devil?" Carolyn said not seeing Victor but seeing Kim a sweaty mess in the foyer.

"I've gone into labor Carolyn. The baby is coming!" Kim said.

"OH MY!! Ok I'll get the drive to come up, no...Ill Get an ambulance up here, no Ill take you myself!" Carolyn said, panicking with excitement and not knowing there was a bomb in the kitchen waiting to blow the entire mansion up to smithereens.

"No, no, no, a friend of David's is here, he was visiting and checking in on me and he's going to take me." Kim said lying about Victor's "Friendship" with David.

"Are you sure??" Carolyn said as she and Caleb stepped of the final step from the staircase.

"Yes, thank you. Please just stay here with Caleb. ....Caleb honey, mama is going to go now, for a little while, Ok? Ill be back soon." Kim said her voice struggle to speak with pain.

"Where????" Caleb said asking where she was off to.

"Im gonna have a baby honey, Ill come home with your..." as she finished her sentence, Victor honked his car's horn. "Ill be back ok? Listen to Cousin Carolyn as I'm out." She said as Victor rushed up the steps of the front entrance to help her to the waiting car.

As Caleb reached up for Carolyn to hold him again. She did, and hugged him tight. She was oddly happy for Kim, who she never really liked. But she believed Kim was giving birth to David's second child, she had no idea the baby was really Victor's.

To Carolyn and even to Caleb, the joy of a new incoming family member would soon wash away so much pain of the last few weeks of death and sadness.

Little did the happy family members know, a ticking clock on a bomb that could blow a 40 foot trench into the ground where it was placed was never going to let anyone else be happy again. Not now.

Not ever.

THE FIRST WIDOW: A Short Story

~LATE OCTOBER, 1712~

A woman felt the sting in her heart of a lost love. It ached inside of her body like a sickness, like a fever that would not break. The loss of her loved one, the man she cared and desired for so long, so many years just would not cease. It was unrelenting.

And a night where the moon filled the sky like a ball so milky white that it lit her way through town as she cuddled herself in a thick woolen coat. Her eyes filled with tears as she thought about the man she loved and how she'd never see him again; not in this world. Not in this life. Not in this form.

She'd have to wait forever. She'd have to wait until she too left the world of the living to finally be reunited with the man she wanted to spend the rest of her life with. But perhaps she could change her fate, perhaps she could force their reunion  to happen quicker than even God had planned.

This sad, lost woman, shook the idea out of her head. How could she even go to that extreme? What was she even thinking? How could she even fathom the idea that slowly bubbled up in her decided mine? Then, as she  gathered herself and her thoughts she looked over to where should could hear the crashing waves of the Atlantic sea beating against a lengthy wooden pier that jetted out into the sea.

Then her dark thoughts came back. This fog covered dock that she was standing on lead to the pier. Perhaps she was there for a reason. After all, it did feel like the cold sea was calling her name, crash after crash.

Suddenly, she found herself rushing over to the edge of the Pier as the foggy night air wet her face as little droplets coated her peach skin. She bounded over to the far end of the pier where the sea crashed up against the thick beams of wood that held up the long pier.

The woman slowly climbed up over the barriers and stood face-forward at the edge of the pier looking out on to the fridges waters. She held herself tightly on to the barriers allowing the wind to blow through her dark hair and through the white skirts that flowed beneath the wool coat that warmed her. She felt like she was flying. She felt like it was now or never... she could see him in the dark distance, his face seemed to form in the fog. She could almost hear him call her name too. She closer her eyes and listened, listened for him to tell her what to do next. Jump?

If she jumped, she knew her coat would only warm her for a minute. She knew that as soon as her body fell into the deep black sea it would be like 1,000 daggers of cold water stabbing to her body. But only until she fell into the deep slumber that would finally reunite her with the love of her life. The pain would be secondary — her reunion, a final moment with the man she loved would be eternal.

"Aye, the quickest way to the end of the world is to jump, it is. But if ye catch thyself  in thought of the process, love, it'll never come. Do it now and forever live in the light, that'll be one way out of this, it will.....or maybe I can help." A voice from behind her on the dock spoke. The strange voice, grizzled and smokey startled the woman on the edge of the pier.

"Don't come any closer! I'll jump! I swear I'll jump!" The woman said, her voice terrified and nervous just as her mind quickly realized what she was doing. Panic set in. Her fingers tightened the barrier. Her nails dug deep into the weathered wood.

The Person with the scratchy voice Noticed this. The beautiful woman on the pier’s edge did not want to die.

This voice from behind came was attached to an older woman dressed in rags, under a thick black cloak. Under the clocks She was covered from head to toe in various bustles and skirts and scarves. Her hair was tied up in a long black scarf that wrapped her thick black hair in a large braid that extended to the center of her back. The older woman removed a deck of Tarot cards from inside one of pockets of her cloak  and began to shuffle them over and over.

"I could help. I can make things more clear. I can show thee the best way out of thine terrible ways. With these!" The old lady said, fanning out the cards in her hands that were covered in rings on each finger.

"What?" The younger woman asked confused. "What do you want from me??”

"I want nothing for me. Only to help a woman I see in need of what I can give ‘er. I can give ‘er more than an easy way out of the world of the living. Come back off the ledge, love, follow me to parlor and I can show thy right way to what ye need. This” the woman continued referencing this attempt at death by self drowning, “is not it, not on the side of a pier in the middle of the night ....such pretty clothes. Come, let Madame Adrina fix it all." The old woman said referencing herself by name.

The young woman, standing backwards on the barriers of a wind swept pier paused to think. Could she trust this old beggar woman with tarot cards? What did she have to lose? She had already lost so much. So, so much. Nothing really was left.

The tragic woman in beautiful clothes turned back around and faced the wild crashing sea in front of her. The water was thrashing below her beautifully adorned feet dressed in shows of satin white that had tiny little pearls fashioned into the shape of a tiny little flower on top of her foot. She looked down at the water, and looked back at the old woman, Adrina, still shuffling her tarot cards and climbed back over on to the solid floor of the wooden pier.

"That's a good lass." Adrina said with a wink as she extended her old withered branch like arm to the young woman. The young woman reached back and Adrina pulled her in close so that they were now arm in arm walking back in the muddy fog towards Adrina's parlor in town.

"I don't know what I was thinking." The young broken hearted woman said to Adrina who held her tight. Her voice seemed relieved of her decision. “I have two children.” She admitted to a nodding Adrina.

"I know child, I know." Madame Adrina said as she stopped under a glowing street lamp to get a better look at the young woman she saved from certain suicide. Adrina looked up at the slightly taller younger woman and saw her beautiful dark haired and perfect skin as clear as a soft peach with pale blue eyes that seemed as deep as the sea. Her Lips were pink and plump, perfect and pillowy pouting at her possible disastrous mistake.

"Tell me your name girl, tell me your name." Adrina asked as the waves crashed up against the docks in the distance.

The young girl adjusted her coat in the cold air and said "Annabella Spencer-Col...." she paused before finishing her full name.

Adrina nodded to Annabella, encouraging her to finish what she was saying. "Collins.....Annabella Collins."

Adrina instantly perked up in surprise, her old eyes widened in sultry surprise when she heard the beautiful woman's last name.

Collins.

"Come girl. Let's get thee answers to all thy questions." Adrina said, her voice filled with glee when she realized she was arm in arm with the woman who's family built the town they were both in, the town of Collinsport.

It was a short walk from the damp docks to Adrina's parlor in the village. The cobblestone streets were empty and cold, slick with the wetness of the sea that had escaped in a mist that settled in every corner of the the stones that made up the streets. Each little village house and small business was dark with sleep and only Adrina and Annabella stirred among the rats that fiddled in the bushes along the way.

The entire journey back to her parlor, Adrina could almost feel the glee in her body escape through every pore of her skin after encountering such a lucrative new client in Annabella Spencer-Collins. The young woman was practically the queen of Collinsport. Her husband Isaac and brother-in-law Amadeus were, when they lived, the men who built the fishing village to what it was. Their journey from England 20 years prior was one for freedom and a better life. The Collins brothers came to these shores, the new world to forge their dream into a business that would revolutionize an industry. And they would go on to be come the father's of a legendary and wealthy family the likes New England never saw coming.

Their power was unyielding, but the brother's fate were controlled by greed and jealously and rivalry. The two brothers would later marry equally beautiful women and have beautiful children, but their lives would end, a year apart in a fiery disaster when a powerful warlock named Judah Zachary cursed the brothers into oblivion leaving their wives alone....miserable and Widowed.

This very recent demise of the brothers Collins was shocking social event that led to a rift in the remaining family: Annabella and her two boys, and Harriet Collins, Amadeus' wife and their children.

The Collins family was without patriarchs leaving the wives to decide on all things business until the eldest of Isaac and Annabella's sons, Theodore, was old enough to take up the reigns. In her distress Annabella saw no way out  but to leave her life here on earth and follow Isaac to where ever he was, a mistake she would have regretted, and so, Adrina's interruption was somewhat of a God send in Annabella's mind who practically skipped on the way back to Adrina's parlor.

At first, Annabella did not know who the mysterious woman on the pier was, but as they continued on their walk back, Annabella became very sure of who her new "friend" was. Adrina was known in Collinsport in certain social circles as a soothsayer and healer. For the most part, the pale-faced woman in a black cloak and shall, kept herself distant from the general public in town, but as for the rich and connected, they came in search of her and her powers. Adrina was indeed well connected and well paid for her mystical services, no matter how much the Town elders frowned and hated the arts she dabbled in.

"Come in child." Adrina whispered as she opened the creaking wooden door to her small parlor in the village.

Annabella looked around the old little parlor, Adrina's home and apothecary shop where she hid her true wonders. It was three small rooms filled with potions and medicines and comfortable seating under two large candelabras that lit when Adrina snapped her fingers.

"How did you do that?" Annabella asked, her heart pounding with wonder.

"My dear, I am woman of the elements and nature. I have forces in me that can do many things. But I do them for the good of the world, you see, not what they've been burning those in Salem for." Adrina said, quickly distinguishing herself different from the women just south of them in Massachusetts who only 5 years before were executed by flame for practicing witchcraft.

Annabella smiled, something of a guise to make Adrina feel comfortable with her, but she didn't believe her. Annabella had heard of Adrina, she knew what she did, she knew what she was and it didn't matter that if caught they could both be put to death. Realizing just who was in front of her and what she could do, Annabella felt invincible.

"As I said on the pier, I can do things for you that will make you feel what you are longing for. There's always a way to come closer to those we lost child, and it doesn't always mean we need to do ourselves in. What I can do for you will make a world of difference and I can assure you...bring you much peace as the Widow Collins." Adrina said sitting down at a large round table with something covered in a gray silk scarf in the center.

Annabella narrowed her eyes, unsure of what the mystical woman meant, but sat down at the table across from her anyway. The beautiful Collins Widow, adjusted her own wool coats as a chill filled the room just as Adrina lifted the silk scarf revealing a crystal ball in the center of the table. The ball glistened in the candle light. Annabella tried to look through it but the crystal was oddly colored, almost like a transparent opal and inside the glass was what seemed like smoke, but smoke that was not moving. She ran her fingers across it's cool golden base that was carved in shapes of long ivy vines that tangled up and made knots that formed the base's feet.

"What can you do for me?" Annabella asked cautiously.

"There is a world beyond this one, my dear, a world I can reach with just my mind and this here crystal conduit. For you, and your generous payment, I can reach your lost love. The love of your life, who I might guess, is waiting for you to reach him through me. You see, we did not cross each other's path's my accident. No, on the contrary. I believe we came to know each other's faces by fate and by the love your Isaac has for you. He wants you to connect him. Through me." Adrina said, pushing a small empty bowl over to Annabella where she expected the payment gold coins to fall into for her service.

"How did you know I searched for Isaac?" Annabella asked, clutching her tiny coin purse close.

"Does thou really not see how my powers reach far beyond thy comprehension? Let it be known that I do know all and will show you all you need with payment of 7 gold." Adrina reminded.

But Annabella Collins was no fool, perhaps lost in a gauzy daze of mourning her husband, and perhaps the childlike mind she often times was chided for by her own mother in letters from England for continuing to inhabit despite her 30 years, but a fool she was not. Annabella could see that Adrina was perhaps what she said she was...a seer, a wise powerful being that could truly connect to the dead, but also there was a twinge of charlatan spinning a web of deceit that cost 7 gold coins.

"I want to Isaac. I want to see him again and talk to him and ask him what he wants me to do with our children Theodore and Caleb. I truly do, but this...this séance will not suffice. It cannot suffice. Could you do more?" Annabella asked, pulling out 12 gold coins from her coin purse and placing them on the table but away from the bowl.

Adrina paused before she answered and looked down at the golden money shining in her eyes, calling her name.

"More is thy request? By what is more?" Adrina wondered.

"More than a trick of a voice. More than a ghostly message from behind the grave. I want more and if you are as powerful as you say and as your reputation in my circles say you are, you could do it. 12 golden coins are yours if it suits you." Annabella shrewdly bargained.

A cool current of air began to swirl around the two woman and the table with the crystal ball. It felt like a window was open allowing the cold ocean sea filled the room and chill them to their bones. Adrina felt a pressure she had never felt before from another client and Annabella, being the most wealthy woman and powerful woman in the entire village and perhaps all of New England was upping Adrina's ante.

The mystic got up from her chair and walked over to the fireplace and again snapped her fingers causing a large fire to burst inside. It warmed her, like 100 suns soothing her cold body as Annabella Collins soon began to collect her coins that were on the table.

"I see you cannot and will not do what I need. I should go." The Collins Widow announced.

"WAIT!" Adrina exclaimed. "I have announced no such surrender. I have only come to a second term of the agreement if thou wishes to move on." Adrina added.

"A second term? Name it."

"13 gold coins, not much more than thou has offered now. 13 gold coins, and what thou wish shall be granted.' Adrina countered as she backed to the bargaining table and sat down allowing the warmth from the fire place to finally reach Annabella too.

Annabella thought for a second, she lifted a brow and pulled out one more, her last golden coin from her purse and tossed it on to the table.

"13." Annabella only said as she collected the coins and placed them inside the payment bowl.

Adrina smiled and pulled the bowl closer to her and counted them. She felt the cool gold coins in her hand played with them. The clinking and jingling sound echoed in her tiny little house.

"What does thou require for this payment so generously given?" Adrina asked.

"Life." Annabella only replied.

"Life?" Adrina asked confused.

"For 13 golden coins I ask you to use all you have, muster all the energy and power you have in your body to bring my beloved husband, Isaac Collins back to life. Back from his cold grave and into my warm arms forever. This is what I require and this is what you have been paid for." Annabella said to Adrina's surprise.

Adrina flipped the long end of her thick black cloak over her shoulder and stared at Annabella for what seemed like hours. She was unsure if the beautiful widow was serious. She could not read her emotions, for her face was as serious and firm as stone. Annabella was not playing a game. She was not pretending. She was as serious as death.

"This is a dark art thou requests. I would be considered a witch if successful. How could I do this without the cure of Judah Zachary coming back to haunt mine own home. Judah was the man who cursed thy husband's death after the pains of judicial misfortune brought down upon him too. Of Witchcraft. Is that where ye leads me? If so, my child, take back these coins." Adrina said, fearing Annabella was putting her in a trap to be caught as a witch.

"This be not a trick or farce. I promise you. Follow me to Eagle Hill and sit by my side, by my husband's grave and if your powers are what I believe them to be you will have earned your 13 gold, and I could potentially pay you more for your services. Come with me there, and show me your gift." Annabella begged.

Adrina, felt again flipped the golden coins around in her and. The texture of each side of the coin felt like it could leave in imprint on the soft flesh of her old withered hands. But it felt good too. Adrina agreed to Annabella's request and quickly placed the money in a pouch that she tied around her waist.

Together they left the small little parlor of Adrina's home and headed towards the cemetery where they'd find Isaac Collin's grave. On their way, the moon was still full and smiling down on the small village of Collinsport lighting their way through the darkness. The cold air caused Annabella's skin to poke up in tiny little bumps. She closed up her wool coat for warmth and listened to their silence as the two woman did not speak the whole way.

Just as they arrived, Adrina grabbed on to the iron gates and blocked Annabella's way in.

"Before we enter, thou must remark on the date. Today, All Hallows Eve. Did thou know this?" Adrina asked.

"I had not noticed." Annabella said truthfully.

"Once we enter these gates and attempt to bring thy husband back into the world of this living, on this date, it will be permanent. I will not be able to reverse anything done here. Never. Ever. Does that suite thy purpose still?" The mystic asked.

"I know what I have requested may make you anxious and I know that what I have asked may even seem frightening to you, a woman of the dark arts but it is what I want." Annabella said pushing past Adrina to enter the cemetary.

Adrina, left standing at the gates, knew she had to earn the wage of 13 gold coins, in fact she needed this payment to survive but she feared for what she was about to do, not because she could not do it but it would be reversing a curse set by a powerful warlock that in truth could destroy her in a flick of a wrist if he caught wind of her betrayal.

Adrina reached down and felt the pouch of money she was paid as Annabella marched on through the moon lit cemetery that was backlit with the blue and gray night sky.  Perhaps there was a way out of this. Perhaps there was a way she could give Annabella what she wanted but still not betray Judah Zachary's curse, which was something she feared. Judah's wrath was fierce and everlasting.

Adrina, the well know secret seer of Collinsport, took a deep breath and followed the determined Annabella Collins up the wet grass of Eagle Hill Cemetery and met her at the grave of Isaac Collins. Annabella stood at the gravestone, her face serious and stone-like itself as she waited for Adrina to catch up.

A blustery wind blew through the enormous and ancient trees above them shaking the leaves to the ground and they fell slowly down onto the grave dotting the hallowed ground of the cemetery. Adrina, weary of her part in Annabella's plot to raise her husband from the dead reached the summit of Isaac's grave site to Annabella's frustrated and cold gaze.

"Tell me woman, what kind of witch is able to step on hallowed ground such as this? You're an interesting breed of your kind." Annabella said, noting that most witches were unable to step food in cemetaries.

"Thou art very learn'ed on my kind, madam, but some things are all but fairy takes and lore. I can set foot anywhere I please no matter the ground." Adrina replied matter of factly.

"Go on then. Do what you need to do to bring my husband back to me." Annabella ordered.

"There is one way that a man long dead can raise from his grave, it is not based on magic alone. The bite of a bat is what I'd need to bring him home to thine arms. First and foremost this bat must taste the flesh of thy husband's neck." Adrina said.

"A bat? You didn't mention this before. How will we get a bat to him? Are we to dig his body out ourselves? Exhume his corpse before he rises? I can't do that! I cannot! I was expecting him to come out on his own or perhaps you'd cast a spell of some sort and he'd appear to me. You never mentioned a bat!" Annabella protested.

"All things are connected in this life. Even the spiritual and animal. We as animals ourselves need to connect in a way that'll raise him. The life of a blood that ran in his veins must be reignited by the bite of this bat." Adrina added, never mentioning the side effect the bite of a bat would have on Isaac's body once it was completed.

The vampire curse, a curse so harsh and so cold that not a single witch would cast it unless revenge was desired. It was a cruel way to vanquish enemies that would forever give them life and yet only life in a condensed form ...to dwell in the darkness. In the shadows. In a lonely world of blood thirst and restlessness. Adrina was no fool. She knew that Annabella would never consent to digging up Isaac's corpse to then have it bitten by a bat. This was designed to trick Annabella to second guess her desire to bring him home to her, in any form, also it would save Adrina the trouble of rustling any feather with the great and powerful Judah Zachary who cursed Isaac and his brother Amadeus Collins to death.

But Annabella too was in a different mind space than Adrina could have ever predicted. Her horror was that of a widow that needed to be loved needed to be protected and needed to see the man she lost so long ago again, no matter what, and even though the very idea of digging her husband out of own grave and opening his coffin to see his body once again, a corpse, decayed and dead, did not matter to her. She wanted Isaac back. No matter what.

Annabella, took a deep breath, and fell to her knees. She began to dig with her own bare hands lifting the dirt with her hands and throwing it over her body allowing it do fall on her dress' bustle and train. She was a mad woman. A woman determined to get what she wanted and would stop at nothing to get it, not even becoming filthy with dirt from her husbands own grave.

The wind again picked up speed and rattled the large bare branches above their two women's heads. Annabella was now one hour into her digging of her husband Isaac's grave, and just as the pressure of the dirt pushing her fingernails back so forcefully that blood began to seep out from under her once perfectly manicured hands she hit the coffin.

The thud of her hand rapping up against the slightly absurd coffin startled her at first, but once she realized what it was, she began to dig faster and faster and faster until the entire coffin was reveled.

She was covered in dirt and dust and mud. She looked as if she had been drowned in a mud puddle. She reached around the corner of the coffin's lid and yanked. The wood had weakened over time and Annabella was easily able to rip the top portion of the lid clear off.

A rolling round of thunder clapped in the sky as Annabella screamed and fell backwards onto the other end of the coffin with the wood from the portion still in her hand.

Adrina gasped at the site of him. There he was. The dead, skeleton faced Isaac Collins.

"My love. My dear dead Isaac. My dear Isaac!!!" Anabella said her voice screaming into the wind.

Adrina, now understanding there was no turning back raised her hands up into the air and closed her eyes. A second thunder clap slashed the sky in two and as if called out to by name, a bat flew directly into the hands of the mystical woman of Collinsport.

She held the animal, squirming and squeaking, in her hand and pushed it's cheeks apart so that it's tiny little fangs were visible. Her eyes turned completely white and began to glow, her magic, finally showing, as Annabella slowly came out of the Isaac's grave allowing for Adrina to enter with the bat.

As the wind and thunder continued to cause a symphony of sounds all around them, Adrina took the bat into the grave and, her long black dress dragged extra dirt from the surface down into the grave with her as her eyes were glowing white like two balls of light guiding her way in all the while the bat continued to squirm in her hands attempting to escape.

The mystical woman knelt down near the body and located some of Isaac's flesh that had not been eaten by worms. She moved her hands around his neck and pushed down the collar of the jacket the corpse was wearing and pressed the bat's mouth into the decaying flesh.

The bat bit down.

But nothing happened.

"He has not risen. Why? Why isn't he awake?" Annabella screamed.

"Patience!" Adrina said, unsure as to what was happening herself.

"You were paid for a service, witch, where is my husband!? Why hasn't he risen!?" Annabella again screamed.

Adrina's head wipped around with her eyes still glowing cold and cruel, but now they were red in color. She hissed and leapt out from the grave and stared deep into Annabella's beautiful and now terrified face. The bat had bitten Adrina's hand without her knowledge. It had tasted her blood without her sensing it....all this before she pressed its face into the dead flesh of Isaac Collins.

Adrina, the witch had turned into a vicious vampire without even giving it notice, and now she was hungry, for blood. For Annabella's warm human blood.

"What...what happened? What are doing?" Annabella asked, backing away from the thirsty creature Adrina.

Adrina snapped the beck of the bat in her hands and dropped it the ground.

"Come here child. Come give me a kiss." Adrina said, her voice hissing like a snake's call.

"Demon! You're a demon!!!!" Annabella screamed as she turned quickly, lifted her skirt enough for her feet to be visible and unguarded and began to run down the slope of Eagle Hill cemetery.

But the new vampire Adrina was hot on her trail.

Annabella Collins ran and ran, filthy from head to toe in the dirt of her husband's now open grave. Adrina, the witch turned vampire chasing her too, faster and faster she flew down the hill after her first meal.

Annabella was screaming as she ran. She could taste the salty air in her mouth as she opened it each time to let out a bloodcurdling scream, a scream that could wake all the dead of Eagle Hill cemetery. But the dead still slept. No one came to Annabella's side.

Adrina continued on her chase, leaping over tall stone graves swishing through the unkept grass and trees all on mission to get her taste of Annabella's blood.

"THY BLOOD IS MINE AND YE WONT ESCAPE MY HUNGER FOR IT IS EVERLASTING!!!" Adrina screamed through the night air, her voice as cold as the wind that blew through Annabella's thick black hair.

Annabella continued to run, she ran so fast she had not realized that she had entered the large thick woods that were just behind the cemetery. The woods were dark and frightening. And as she entered them the fog began to creep in from the sea that was just beyond the large patch of forest. She was running and running and in the confusing of her escape and in the fog she saw that she had gotten turned around.

She did not know which way to go. Where was north? Where was south? Annabella looked up to the sky and it was covered by clouds, the moon's light beamed down through them but she could not tell where it was situated, nor could she see the stars and where they were placed in the sky. This nautical trick of direction lost in the fog like so many sailors over the centuries who had died foggy and unpassable seas.

Suddenly, the panicked Annabella came to a clearing in the forest. It was almost a perfect circle of large pine trees. She looked all around her and no one was there. Perhaps Adrina was lost in the woods too. Perhaps she could hide here and wait until the morning. Perhaps the monstrous witch lost hope in the chase and abandoned her to fend for herself in the forest.

Annabella could hear owls call to themselves. They're hoots echoed in the cathedral of trees that surrounded them. She could also hear twigs snap in the distance.

She turned towards the sound. Nothing there.

More broken twigs. But this time on the other side of her.

Annabella turned again towards that sound and when she looked...there was nothing there.

Then she heard them to her right. Then to her left.

More snapping twigs.

She was surrounded, surrounded by something. But she could not see what.

Was it animals? Was it Adrina somehow with magic and a trick of the space around her transporting herself around to different parts of the forest to confuse Annabella, and drive her mad, weaken her enough in spirit and in consciousness so that she could then pounce on her and drink from her neck?

And then, slowly, from the shadows of the encirclement of trees Annabella saw what was breaking those twist all around her.

It was Adrina. But she wasn't alone.

Three other witches had arrived and had come to step out of the shadows with the new Vampire/witch hybrid Adrina. The three other witches had seen how powerful Adrina was now that she was part of the undead world of vampire's that they wanted that power too. They wanted to be one like Adrina and Annabella would be the feast they would all enjoy as a new breed of coven, blood thirsty vampire witches.

"Do not fear dear girl....this is what it will come to. This is where your husband's life has given us. Your true destiny was not to be with him at all, but were to be one of us, our 5th sister. Our 5th of the coven." Adrina said as she and the three others slowly walked towards Annabella surrounding her.

"No, this is not what I wanted, I wanted to be with my husband forever, and not this. This is not.....no...please I paid you, I gave you money, more money than you have ever seen and I can give you more. The Collins family is rich in gold and power and I can give you more of that. Please do not harm me. My children...please...think of my two children." Annabella pleaded as she fell to her knees and into a pile of thick mud that was under her feet.

"A witch does not beg, and I and my three sisters will help thee get what thine heart desires. After you give us what we need, and money of gold is not it." Adrina said, her fangs showing through her tight red lips, her eyes glowing a vengeful and wicked red.

"Let us drink." One of the other witches of the coven said.

"Let us drink." The third and forth witch added.

They got closer and closer and then, with a split second remaining before her life was snuffed out, Annabella reached into the bodice of her dress and pulled out a diamond and gold rosary beads, with a crucifix that sparkled in the light of the blue moon above.

Adrina hissed at the site of the cross and fell to her knees as if her eyes were being pulled out of their sockets. The other witches fell too in unison copying Adrina, in fact the other three witches weren't witches at all. They were manifestations of Adrina's powers, in essence they were farce; figments of Adrina's own mind created to trick Annabella into thinking there were more people with Adrina. They were imaginary beings made to frighten Annabella, to scare her into giving herself over to the new vampire.

As soon as the pain of seeing the golden and diamond crucifix became too much the three other pretend witches vanished into a mist and disappeared from view leaving only Annabella and Adrina alone in encircled by the trees of the forest.

Feeling safer now, and having the upper hand, Annabella, dirty, fifthy from her digging and running, walked over to the hissing and writhing Adrina and placed the cross on the witches forehead. It began to sizzle on the witches skin cause it to burn a deep scar in the shape of the crucifix causing Adrina more unbearable pain.

"You have tricked me and taken from me and promised me, and yet delivered nothing. In fact you tried to kill me too. For that, witch, I banish you to the depths of hell for ever. May the only god I know take mercy on your withering decrepit soul." Annabella said as she reached over for a large broken branch that she snapped over her knee creating a sharp spear which she plunged deep into Adrina's chest killing her instantly.

Adrina gasped for air and suddenly, she stopped. Smoke began to come out every one of her facial orifices and her skin turned to an ash like color and her insides began to burn up and then her whole chest caved in showing Annabella her cold black heart.

Annabella, reached into Adrina's chest and grabbed the heart that had turned to a rock, a stone like Onyx and placed it in her hand tightly. She then grabbed the 13 gold coins that she had given her and ripped them from the witches body.

She looked down at the body of the dead witch and kicked it. She left her there dead, to decompose into the forest floor.

Four weeks later, Annabella stood on a autumn kissed balcony at Collinwood just above the large pillars of the front portico of the beautiful white painted mansion exterior. Isaac Collins’ Widow stood stoic and serene in this balcony waving goodbye to her sister-in-law Harriet Collins and Harriet's two children who were headed to Harriet's sister's house in Boston to visit through the winter. Annabella and Harriet were two women who knew the pain of losing their husbands under terrible, terrible circumstances. It was a bond they reluctantly shared. And although they were never the closest in terms of a friendship, they were family. To them, no matter their petty disagreements family stuck together in tragedy.

When Harriet’s husband Amadeus died, Issac and Annabella were there for her and when the curse that killed Amadeus came for Isaac, Harriet was there in return.

Although the two Widows were close due to their tragedy, Annabella never once breathed a word to Harriet of the night she encountered the witch Adrina.

As Annabella waved Harriet and the children’s horse and buggy goodbye, Thomas Frame, Collinwood's caretaker and assistant to Issac and Amadeus with the Fishing Fleet suddenly rushed in carrying a large package that had just been delivered.

He was a handsome man with caramel colored skin and eyes deep and brown that made Annabella feel safe and secure. He often stayed nights in the mansion...often in the adjoining room to Annabella’s master suite.

She didn’t see him as an employee, he was much more. He was a friend. A confident. A partner. And He would Stay that way with her, close at heart for the rest of his life.

"Ma'am, this has just arrived from town for you." Thomas said handing his mistress a large blue box.

"Oh, thank you Thomas, Ill open it in side." She said as she and Thomas both entered the large bedroom from the balcony where her two sons were playing on the floor next to large fireplace that beamed a comforting warmth on both of them as they played.

Annabella smiled at her two sons who had adjusted well after their father's death. She wondered how they'd carry on the Collins family name without him but she knew too that nothing would stop them from being the heirs of this family. Nothing would stop her too from being sure that they were safe from all harm and that all their father Isaac's dreams came true for his two children.

Thomas, who was standing in his black suite and carefully buttoned up shirt handed the pale blue box over to Annabella who was seated now on a overstuffed sofa with five matching cushions. She pulled the box over to her lap and unraveled the large white ribbon that had been tied in a beautiful bow from the shop in town the package came from.

Isaac Collins’ widow, Annabella Spencer-Collins, was a woman who was always thinking of the future and how things could change and be better. That’s why she kept Thomas around too. Now that Isaac was gone and she had no more desire to bring him back to this realm, she had settled on giving his future descendants something from his life to them. For their protection, something crafted just for them to pass along down the Bloodlines of the Collins family for generations to come.

This crafted details and personal touches from Annabella herself, these heirlooms, were priceless to her.

She slowly lifted the lid of the box and revealed a smaller box. She pulled out the smaller box and opened it. Inside, a silver necklace with a pendant on it with the silver head of a wolf. This necklace she would give younger son Theodore to keep for all his life. It was in his destiny to be the protector of the family. And like a wolf protects its pack, so would Theodor and all his descendants protect the Collins family in anyway they could.

But that wasn't all. Annabella had also made something even more special for her eldest son Caleb. Being the elder of the two boys, and heirs of Isaac's fortune and company, Caleb would be granted a very special gift that his mother had made for him to be passed down to his descendants.

Annabella then removed the silk lining under the necklace. There, laying in yet another silky cocoon like bedding in the smaller open faced box was a silver ring with an Onyx stone made from the witch Adrina's black heart on the night Annabella killed her and saved her own life.

This black stoned ring would be given to Caleb by his mother Annabella when he turned 18 for his protection and would remain a symbol of how close Annabella came to full on distraction. It would be his for life, and then one day Caleb would bequeath it to his own eldest son Joshua Colons and in turn Joshua too would give this ring to his eldest child. Another boy.

This last Collins son to inherit the witch’s black heart ring, Joshua’s son and Annabella's future great-grandson; years from the day Annabella had the ring made from the blackened heart of a deadly witch would be named.....

Barnabas Collins.

Series 13/Chapter 11: LOVE N-EVER LASTING

The Old House: Evangeline spies on Cameron

The light of a single candle flickered in a strange cold stream of air that filtered in through the crevices and cracks in the basement of the old house. The wax slowly dripped down the white candle and over the silver candle stick falling and instantly hardening.

It was a perfect circle of wax. Round with no breaks in it's surface.

"Wake up, Claudia Evangeline. Wake up." A voice demanded from the shadows of the room. "Wake up and take control."

Evangeline's eyes blinked open. She had fallen asleep next to the vampire she knew as Leopold but when she turned over, he was not in bed. She squinted, her eyes still weak and blurry from sleep to see who was speaking with her. Then, in the flickering of the single candle, the silhouette of Bathlem, the witch who took her in as a baby, stepped forward into the orange glowing allowing it to illuminate half of her face.

"Mother Bathlem! You came back." Evangeline asked rushing over to Bathlem who transparent in her bodily form. Evangeline could see the wall behind the supreme witch's body.

"These weeks as I have come and gone and watch you, I have seen you falling in love with this creature Leopold just as your mother fell for Barnabas. The trap of love and lust can be alluring, my child, but it can also be deadly. I tried not to disrupt the natural flow of your life and have attempted to guide you...but I have seen you in the last few weeks defeat yourself with the powers of love." Bathlem replied.

"I don't know what to do. I have tried so hard to unlatch myself to Leopold, I know that I must leave, UI know that I could muster all the energy in my body and just go ....but I haven't been able to do it. I question myself. What if this is the only person that will love me?" Evangeline finally confessed.

"It is not meant to be Evangeline Claudia. There is more for you and in your life to come. This," Bathlem said looking around the dark layer below the old house "is not your destiny. You know this."

"He and I have a connection, like nothing I have ever felt before and I ..." Evangeline paused...."I've needed something like this in my life. I felt like a desert and when Leopold came into my life I suddenly felt like I was dancing in a rain storm. It felt good." Evangeline said, expressing a sense of happiness that she had never felt before. Especially with a man.

Bathlem took a deep breath. It was a similar conversation she had with Angelique Bouchard just before Angelique began her journey to Collinsport from the island of Martinique hundreds of years ago. Love was, by all accounts in all the world, the most powerful magical spell ever. And Evangeline was just another one of it's victims.

"We often times only see what we want to see even though the truth is lurking around every corner ready to remind us its all a trap. My child, you have fallen prey to this trap just as your mother before you....and myself." Bathlem confused, as she flattened the front of her nun's habit.

"You were in love once?" Evangeline asked.

"I thought I was. I thought he loved me too. But our two journeys, much like yours and this Leopold's did not connect. They ran parallel. And that is not a journey I want for you. You deserve more and will get more. But not here. Not with him." Bathlem said, finally telling Evangeline the truth.

"I have seen his dark side, a side that I know now ..." Evangeline began before Bathlem interrupted.

"Now? Now you doubt him. He's kept secrets from you and he's kept you prisoner. How does that feel?" Bathlem asked as she sat on the bed, her body still transparent.

"I don't know." Evangeline said turning away embarrassed.

"Foolish child. You are much your mother's daughter. Love took from her too. Her life. Her passions. They were all amenities she frolicked in only to be bitten by the disaster of Barnabas Collins --killing her. And now you frolic in those same treacherous waters. A witch cannot love a vampire and live to tell the tale. It is futile, my child. It is suicide." Bathlem explained.

"What do I do? How can I my journey back on track Mother Bathlem? I've fallen so far behind in my quest for my father that....." Evangeline paused again. "I fear I may be too late. That it's all over for me. My destiny to finally confront Barnabas, my father is over. He's won. He's won."

Bathlem chuckled a deep and breathy chuckle.

"So young. So foolish. So blind." The witch dressed as the nun said.

Bathlem looked at the young girl she raised in an orphanage for centuries and put her hand on Evangeline's perfect white face. They were close. Like mother and daughter, and Evangeline did see Bathlem as a surrogate for Angelique. She had to. Bathem was all she had all her life.

Bathelm then turned and pointed to a chamber adjacent to the basement. Evangeline looked confused but followed where Bathlem was pointing. "There you will find the truth that has been staring you in the face this whole time. Nothing is as it seems. In this realm, it never is."

The younger sorceress walked into a chamber where Barnabas' coffin was. She looked at it with a deep pain in her heart. She lifted the lid---it was empty.

Evangeline's child like heart hoped that Barnabas was there. Laying in his vampiric slumber or perhaps Leopold would be there waiting for her to tell her that he loved her and that he would protect her and help her somehow, some way find Barnabas so she could finally end him and his control over her mind and her soul that was trapped for generations in the world of the living because of their unfinished business in the world of the living.

But only the soft fold of the velvet lining looked up at Evangeline from inside the coffin. She caressed them and felt their soft edges as a whimper of sadness peeked out from inside her chest.

As she came back into the room disappointed that Bathlem had sent her into the coffin chamber to see that she was truly alone, she saw that Bathlem had left her.

Vanished into thin air. but not without leaving another clue to the truth.

A single candle, lit by Bathlem before she vanished, burned inside a third chamber off to the other side of the basement.

Confused, Evangeline then pitter-patted her bare-feet over to the third chamber in the basement where she could see the candle burning, like a beacon, a lighthouse, luring Evangeline in. It was in this room that Noelle had set up refrigerators filled with hundreds of pints of blood. It was Leopold's blood supply room.

Evangeline shifted around the empty plastic blood containers unsure as to why Bathelm had pointed her to go into this room with the single candle. Leopold, as Justin was calling himself, had gone out to find more of the red liquid and Bathlem knew this was the time for the truth to finally be told.

As Evangeline sorted through Leopold's things a single box had been left out in the open for Evangeline to find. She slowly walked over to the box, it was a pale brown with a perfectly fitted top. She reached out her hands and touched the lid. She slowly lifted the lid and found several news paper clippings. that read:

SHERIFF'S SON STILL MISSING

JUSTIN PATTERSON MISSING

PATTERSON FEARED DEAD

Evangeline then noticed the date of the papers and also the photos of the person the news reports mentioned. Justin Patterson, the man missing, the man from 1966 that was feared dead was also Leopold, the vampire. Noelle had hidden him all this time and no one knew who he was.

Evangeline was not the only one using a fake name. He was not who he said he was. He was not of this time. He was not the man he pretended to be. He was a liar. A conniver. He had no intention of being who he was and telling her the truth about how he came to be who he was. The year 1966 was not foreign to her. She knew exactly what that  year meant in terms of Collinsport lore and history.

It dawned on Evangeline that the only way this Justin person, going by Leopold, could be a vampire from 1966, 25 years ago, was that if another vampire in that year made him that way.

Evangeline deduced that Leopold was a yet another victim of her father's, Barnabas Collins. Yet another name to add to the list of the violated and blood drained. Except this victim Justin, Evangeline believed true, became cursed to live forever just as Barnabas.

Evangeline could not hold her tongue no more. She began to fume and let out a giant scream that shook the walls.

The monstrous act of the fatal bite of Barnabas’ making Justin one of the undead too tore her in shreds. Her own father made this man what he was. And although she knew Justin was bad for her, she still DID love him. And she pitied him. And she mourned him.

Evangeline suddenly felt sick. She instantly felt revolted and vomited on the floor in disgust. Her heart was pounding at realizing her father did this, that her father made this man a monster. The tears began to fall and she dropped the lid of the box back in its pace and rushed out of the room wrapped herself with a large black scarf she found on the back of a chair and slowly made her way, barefoot, up the stone staircase that lead into the Old House to finally free herself of the horrors of this basement.

Evangeline would never truly know what happened in 1966 the nights Justin became Leopold. Evangeline, who blamed her father rightly for her own abandonment and remove from her mother’s arms at birth, for the death of her wicked mother too, for her wrongful exile and extinction from the Collins family tree... would never ever know Angelique Bouchard was truly to blame for Justin’s transition into the monster he was after invading and possessing the body of Arabella Stoddard and tore at his neck for his blood.

Once more Barnabas would be blamed for a crime he didn't commit. And Evangeline would hate him even more deeply for it for the rest of her life.

Upstairs in the old house, another love story was freezing.

"Is there anything I can do for you?" Lucas said, sitting next to his sobbing boyfriend Cameron in the Old House drawing room the day after Cameron had just cremated his aunt Noelle after her death.

Cameron was inconsolable. He was devastated about her death. His whole life all he knew was Noelle. She was not only the woman who raised him but she was also his friend. His confidant. In the last month their relationship had become strained and things were painful but he loved her just the same.

Evangeline reached the exit of the basement but stopped, hiding herself in the hallway to listen to Cameron and Lucas.

"I don't know what to do. I don't know what I'm going to do now that I'm alone." Cameron said through tears and clutching a throw pillow to his chest.

"You're not alone. You have me." Lucas replied.

Cameron turned and looked at him. He leaned over and kissed Lucas on the lips softly then turned away.

"I think you should leave." Cameron said.

"Leave? I can't leave you like this? I want to be here with you I want to be here for you." Lucas answered.

Cameron clutched the necklace around his neck that Lucas had found hidden in the walls of Collinwood that was on Cameron's father's body. It was not only a reminder that his father was dead but also a reminder that Lucas and Noelle had gone behind his back and went into Collinwood searching for answers. Cameron still felt betrayed by Lucas. He felt like there was a lack of trust floating around them both and even though he needed to be with the man he loved, he couldn't. He needed Lucas to leave. He needed space.

"I think I just need to be alone right now. I just need to be here, in this place for as long as I can until the Collins' ask me to leave. But Alone." Cameron said still gripping the necklace.

"Cam, this is your home too. They're your family. If you just tell...." Lucas  began before Cameron interrupted.

"Stop. Just stop. I need you to stop." Cameron said clearing away the tears from his face and clutching his Aunt Noelle's urn. "At this point if Carolyn was meant to know me, and how she and I are connected it would happen. I don't want ...." He paused and looked up at the portrait of the mysterious Barnabas over the mantle.

The fireplace snapped and sparked under the painting glowing a bright light that reflected from under Barnabas into the eyes of his hiding daughter Evangeline as she listened to Cameron and Lucas talk.

"If it's meant to be that I somehow come back into their lives. It'll happen. I'm not forcing anything at this point. Look where forcing things got us. Look where pushing and pushing and pushing got us! No. I think I'm going to let things be. Just as they are." Cameron finally confirmed.

Lucas got up and kissed Cameron on the head. He held on to him for as long as he could but Cameron wouldn't budge. It was clear that there was a strain on the relationship and it might not survive.

Lucas walked over to the Old House's foyer and put on his coat and scarf. A light cool gust of air blue over the exposed parts of his neck. He instantly got goosebumps and looked behind him. On the floor was the scarf Evangeline was wearing. Justin's scarf.

Lucas went over and picked it up. Then walked back towards the entrance of the drawing room and saw Cameron sitting in a a comfortable chair that he had moved closer to the fire place. The light of the fire flashed a bright light on Cameron's perfect face and Lucas's heart skipped. He loved him, but he knew that things were bigger than Collinsport, and perhaps bigger than his life with Cameron.

As the front door of the Old House closed behind Lucas, Cameron felt the same cool air come across the skin of his arms. He looked down and saw the hairs standing up on their own. He shuttered. Then the air came again, this time stronger and it blew on the fire in front of him.

Cameron got up and turned around to see the witch Evangeline staring him in the face.

"What ....? Who are you....What are you doing here?" He asked her.

"You're in pain. I can feel it." Evangeline said.

"Who are you?" Cameron asked again this time more forcefully.

"What is making you feel this pain?" She asked.

Cameron looked at her closer in the face. The light of the fire again flickered bright and then he realized he did know her. Not personally, but he did know her face. She was Caleb's governess. He had seen her in passing while Noelle worked at the mansion. She seemed different in the dim light, but he was sure she was the woman who had gone missing weeks and weeks ago.

"You're....the missing governess! What are you doing where? Have you been here this whole time? Oh my god we have to call David and tell him you're ok. Didn't you know the family thought you abandoned your job suddenly?" Sniffled Cameron motioning to the phone on side table.

She lifted her hand up in the hair and Cameron froze in place.

"Stop." She said as even the clocks stopped ticking away time.

Cameron just stared at her. She could feel his deep pain, the hurt over all the horrible secrets revealed, the betrayal by his boyfriend Lucas and even by Noelle. She could almost taste how much pain he was in.

"What....are you doing?" Cameron asked through a clinched and frozen body.

"Pain. I know it so well. I too have felt this type of pain and for some reason yours is burrowing into me as if it's my own. I don't know why." Evangeline said.

"You're not answering my question, Evangeline, what are you doing in my house?" He asked.

Evangeline paused before answering. She had been going by her birth name Evangeline for so long that she had forgotten that she had a different identity all together. One that mother Bathlem and the nuns had given her. The name of a daughter of the Coven.

"Claudia." She said softly.

"What?" Cameron asked, his mind was a mess of confusion and sorrow. "Answer me!" He repeated.

"I am Claudia Bouchard. Daughter of Barnabas. Daughter of Angelique. My pain is real. Just like yours. It burns inside of me, I think we are similar and I feel your pain so real. So cold. And because of that Evangeline is dead. I am Claudia Bouchard." She said.

The pain that she felt in that room was like no other. She had been hidden away in the basement for so long that she had forgotten what it was like to feel and sense other people's emotions. She needed to feed off of other's real life emotions to tap into her own and grow her powers to grow her feelings to grow as a person.

Claudia closed her eyes slowly and lifted her hand in front of Cameron's face and in Latin said:

"Nunc somnum. Somno. Nunc somnum. Sonmno."

Cameron's eyes began to close. He began to feel his whole body go limp. As he fell Evangeline, now going by her adopted name Claudia, grabbed him and placed him on the sofa.

Cameron fell asleep. He would rest now, and the pain of losing his aunt Noelle would ease over time, but it would never vanish completely. What's more, he would wake in the morning not remembering seeing Claudia at all.

Claudia turned back once more to see him sleeping soundly. She then opened the door and quickly began to make her way over to the bigger mansion the Collinwood grounds.

Tragedy at Widows Hills

Claudia, reinstating herself with the name the nuns gave her, gathered her self just outside the steps of the Old House. She took a deep breath of salty sea air and began her short distance journey back to the main mansion where she worked as Caleb's governess.

But she could not be detected. She could not return and behave as if nothing happened.

She had to return to the mansion and hide. Hide herself until the moment was right and strike again. She would wait out her father Barnabas' return, no matter how long it would take. No matter how many years. Decades. Centuries. All she had now, was time.

As the wind from the sea crashed through the bare branches of the woods around the two homes on the Collinwood land, Evangeline could feel a sense that she was not alone, in fact she expected it. This was the moment that clutched at her throat like a winter morning.

She felt eyes. Hungry. Cruel eyes. She felt the cold of something staring at her. Vicious and monstrous. These cold eyes gazed at Claudia who's curls were floating in each gust of wind like the guilded sail of a ship. She knew who it was.

Leopold...Justin. The vampire she almost gave up her destiny for. The man she felt so connected to but knew that their love could not be. It would not last and it most certainly would self district.

"A witch cannot love a vampire and live to tell the tale."  She heard echo in Bathlem's voice.

"Your eyes will forever sear into my soul....Justin." Claudia said using Leopold's real name to his surprise.

Justin leapt from his shadowy spot behind large oak trees and bushes and hissed with a mouth full of sharp teeth that were framed with lips stained with animal blood that Justin had sought out for nourishment.

"You'll never escape me, we deserve each other. We're meant for each other." He growled.

Claudia turned to see his carnivorous and bloody face. Even in his grotesque transition she still could see the kindness in his eyes. His human attribute felt warm and loving. It was still there. The spark of humanity that made Justin Justin. This spark killed any coldness that was the vampire inside him he named Leopold.

Claudia began to glow, showing him her powers were coming back, slowly but surely. It was a warning sign to him. A signal that she was not to be toyed with.

"Things should not have been able to get this far, I never should have allowed them. My father did this to you, and I cannot be with a man, a monster, a creation of my father's doing. He did this. He made you this creature. He pushed his curse on to you. You deserve better Justin, I deserve better. Can’t you see? Can’t you see that we cannot and should not continue to spiraling chaos that destroyed my own parents? Justin... we will kill each other. We will die not because our love is strong but because it will be in our nature.” She said to Justin in all sincerity and to his confusion of her openness.

"But I wasn’t ....." He began to explain about Arabella but Evangeline stopped him.

"You won’t persuade me to think different of us. There is no us. You transferred your love for India do Arco on to me. Another of my father’s victims. I don't know if our suddenly passion was ever real Justin. I don't know if we were ever meant to be. I thought it loved you too...Maybe I do, I don't know but we're impossible together. Don't you see? We can never be together. Ever. We'll die." Claudia explained.

Justin, his eyes and mouth finally returning to human form as best it could, looked over at this woman, this beautiful kind woman that had so much hurt and pain running around in her as she had the blood of a witch and a vampire. She was him--he was her. He knew it. He wanted it. He wanted it now.

"I can't accept that. I cannot. I WILL NOT!!" Justin screamed. His frustrations ending in a rogue flash of lighting that exploded in the far off hills of Collinsport but lit up the sky like the sun had come out.

"You have to. There's no other way. In this life, we don't belong together. In this world, in this universe, it cannot be." Claudia said as she began to turn allowing the wind to blow in her face.

"You're just giving up? Even though you feel this connection too? How can you do that? How can you just give up on us. We have so much potential for more. Evangeline...." He said before being interrupted.

"Don't call me that! I don't want to be known as that name ever again. I never want to her the name Barnabas Collins gave me." She screamed.

He was confused. He was getting his heart broken all over again. First in the 60's by Carolyn and Maggie, then India and now Evangeline, the one woman he thought would be with him for eternity because of their mutual connection to the world of the supernatural.

"My name is Claudia Bouchard, and I am the daughter of Angelique and Barnabas. I have a mission to find my father, find him and destroy him for all he's ever done. I cannot allow you to stop me from this. No man will stop me from this." Claudia said, her heart pounding in her ears, her blood racing. The flashes of lighting splashing on her face like flashes from a camera light bulb.

"I will never accept that. If I cannot have you, NO ONE WILL!" Justin said as he lunged for Claudia with his mouth gaping ready to bite down on her skin that would ultimately be poison for him and kill her.

With her powers she blocked him, he stood in mid air floating, gasping to breath. Gasping for release.

She held him in place floating like that for only second but he began to suffocate. The lighting flashed again , this time lighting his face, a tear was falling down his cheek and it glistened in the flashes of lightening. A real, tear. A human emotion peeking through his cold violent vampire veneer.

She too began to feel the hurt of the moment too, her heart felt like a vase, shattering into a million pieces.

Their short lived love affair was collapsing like a house of cards or a castle made of sand.

And it was because of her.

"It's over. This......this thing... it was not meant to last." She said as she released him and turned to go to the main house. He fell to the ground panting, pulling in large deep breaths into his lungs.

As she continued on her walk, she came across the final orchard of large tress that were flowing in the wind just yards away from the edge of Widow's Hill. She did not feel Justin's eyes on her anymore. She could only see the waves crashing up against the rocks below the cliff side of cliff side.

Crashing like powerful forces of nature that exploded just below her. The pounding of the dark blue waves that became electric when the distant lighting flashed over them spewed small bits of water up into the air and on her skin.

Suddenly a flash of lighting sparked brightly in her eye and in the split second flash Justin lunged at her again from out of no where, deep in the shadows.

They rolled around on the edge of the grassy cliff of Widow's Hill. He wanted to kill her with his bite. She fought him with all she could. Her hand was on his neck. He pushed and pushed himself on her attempting to bite her flesh with his fangs. He wanted her blood. He wanted her blood to kill him and his bite kill her. Like a deadly final kiss that would destroy them both. An unhinged lover who would do all he could to satisfy the urge to end things forever for the both of them.

This is what Bathlem warned her about. His rage. His callousness. His visceral thirst for her blood to then end it all.

Their two energies, vampire and witch was a toxic force. Toxic, volcanic and explosive. Destined to die no matter what.

Claudia pushed her body and struggled with the man whom she felt loved her and whom she felt she could love back---in a different world.

Finally, she lifted her knee that was under his stomach and plunged it deep into his belly launching him over the cliff.

She rushed over to the edge and saw him screaming for her to help, hold on tightly to a root of a tree that had peirced the side of the cliff. She was crying and wasn't sure what to do.

"HELP ME!!" He screamed as one hand held on to the large root coming out of the side of the cliff and the other reaching for her.

She reached down, but it was too late. The root have out, sliced off the edge into a perfect sharp stake and Justin feel to the bottom of the cliff. The thick root, sharpened at the edge like a knife fell deep into his chest and into his heart killing him instantly.

She screamed too. A she looked over the cliff, she could not see him.

The black waves washed up on the rocks. But she still could not see Justin.

"LEOPOLD!!!!!!" She screamed using the name she fell in love with.

Then a flash of lighting came again and she saw him, the sharpened root that had ripped from the side of the cliff that he was hanging on has staked him directly in the heart killing. His blood spilled from his body into the splashing water all around him tainting it in swirls of crimson and scarlet bubbles.

He was dead.

Then darkness again. And Evangeline was wailing in grief. She continued to stare down at the bottom of Widow's Hill hoping that when the lightening flashed again she would see him up on his feet and alive. But when the lightening flashed again, Illuminating the rocks below Evangeline saw the rocks were shockingly bare of his body.

Justin had been washed away by the black waves and taken into the sea to sink to the darkness and cold water never to be seen again.

Evangeline was inconsolable. She covered her face with her shall and screamed a bloodcurdling scream. How cruel the world was. To her she knew they were no good for each other but then ache of his death was no less of a pain in her heart. His devastating Death was no less a shock, a lashing, a painful reminder was truly now... alone.

She cried until the snot in her nose spewed all over her hands. She destroyed him. She could not be with him but she also could not stand the fact that he was dead and that she and her father had done this to him in the first place.

Was she as guilty as her father??

"A witch cannot love a vampire and live to tell the tale." echoed Bethlehem's voice in her mind.

In her grief Evangeline began to feel her breathing slow. She was feeling light headed and panicked. Her blood was racing her heart throbbing...The Collins witch started to become dizzy. She felt her heart skip a beat and then she fainted onto the soft cold grass of Widow's Hill allowing her whole body give into her sorrow.

Quentin's secret Room

When the witch Claudia awoke, she was asleep on a bed in the West Wing of Collinood. Safe. Sound. She looked around the room. She had never seen this room before when she worked as Cable's governess. It seemed to have been closed off from the main part of the house. The purple drapes were dusty and old. The bed itself looked over 100 years old but there were fresh flowers in a vase on a table. She rushed over to the door, still barefoot and grass stained from the tragedy that occurred on Widow's Hill, and the door was locked. She was sealed inside. Her powers too gone.

As her tear stained face smelled the fresh lilies a large gramophone on a side table began to play music.

She went over to it...the sound of the alluring music drew her closer and closer. She felt it's cool golden surfaces as ran her finger over an engraving on the golden plague attached to the sound box.

It read:
QUENTIN

Then a voice, Bathlem's voice, could be heard in her mind:

"My child, this will be your sanctuary for as long as I can protect you. When the time is right. The door of this locked room will open up your powers will return and you will find your way to freedom, and your destiny. This will be the journey of Barnabas' return to this place. But not until the day comes....in here you will wait."

Claudia fell back in a chair in shock. She looked around her new home. A room far off in a distant lonely part of Collinwood. She was trapped. And unsure of when she would be free.  No one would find her.

All she could do was wait. Wait. And Wait some more.
