Series 10/Chapter 6: 1949

The great house on Widow's Hill was back-lit by the breaking of lightening of a storm, it felt just as volatile inside. A woman who had come back from a different time was now faced with the secret she had been hiding for over 50 years. Her past had come back to haunt her in the form of a granddaughter she never knew existed, the daughter of the son she left behind in the wake of a terrible tragedy. Julia Hoffman's life before Collinwood and Barnabas and the Collins family began long before she came to Collinsport as the chief of staff at Windcliff Sanitarium.

Up in her room, Julia fiddled with the shiny medallion around her neck, nervously thinking of what it meant having Quinn Devereaux so close to home. Julia hid her life before she permanently came to this area as well as she could, but ever imagined her son having a child of his own child. What's more, Julia never imagined these paths crossing, not now, not ever and certainly not at Collinwood.

Julia watched the rain pour, furiously down on to the grounds around Collinwood. This thunderstorm took her back to where it all began, her life unknown. To Bangor 1949:

BANGOR, MAINE: 1949

"Now, now, you're going to be fine. I've examined you and I think that there's nothing for you to worry about." Dr. Laurence Devereaux said to patient, as he carefully helped her sit up after their quick check up.

He was an OBGYN, famously popular with the ladies in Bangor for his kind bedside manner. He was tall, had dark green eyes and ruggedly handsome with a quick wit to match his wife's, a med student named Julia who worked at his practice filing paperwork on her days off from school. Things within the marriage were as perfect as they could be on the outside, but on the inside, behind the Devereaux family doors, things weren't always so perfect.

Dr. Devereaux smiled to the woman as she carefully made her way out of the office. He then picked up the file on his next patient, and a giant grin fell upon his face. It was a woman who had come to see him from out of town because of  his good reputation. She was a wealthy socialite whom he connected with almost instantly. She, a beautiful brunette with fair skin and bright eyes was too beginning to feel the pressures of an  unhappy marriage, it didn't help however that she was 8 and a half months pregnant.

"Please, please come in!" Laurence said to his patient as he closed to door behind him in the exam room. "I'm so happy to see you."

"Thank you." The lovely mother to be said blushing.

"What can I help you with this week? I have to say I was surprised to see your name on my list of patients today. We just had an appointment. Has something happened?" He professionally questioned.

The patient felt embarrassed. She had no real reason to come see him this time. It was true, their last appointment went well and she wasn't due to come back until after the baby was born. This appointment was personal. She had to speak to him.

"Things are strained at home. I ...." she said shocked at the words coming out of her mouth. "...I don't know what to do." She confessed.

"What's happened? Have you been hurt?" Laurence said, his heart fully immersed in the patient's personal life.

"I just don't see where my life is going. I'm scared. I love my husband to no end but there are things I cannot deal with. His anger. His drinking. His complete disregard for our child that is coming! He's become cruel. My brother says that I don't need him, that I can do just as well without him. But...well, I'm not proud of this, but I just can't see myself living with him forever. I'm trying....but I can't see it." the woman said wiping away a small tear the fell from her perfectly made up cheek.

"And you came here? To me?" Laurence said sitting down on a stood facing the woman.

"I didn't know where else to go. You've been so kind to me, I just felt like, I could be safe here even if it were for just a few hours." She said.

"You are safe here, I will always protect you. Always." Laurence said reaching for her hands. She grabbed on and squeezed.

Just outside, Julia arrived for a small 3 hours shift of filing her husbands paperwork before she went off to a few night classes. Julia was in her early 20s. Striking red hair, beautiful figure. She stepped into the sunny office and removed her fashionable sun glasses and greeting the other mother's waiting in the waiting room. Her tweed blue suit the envy of every mother there.

"Janet, good afternoon!" Julia said, greeting the attending nurse.

"Hello Mrs. Devereaux, how's little Michael!" Janet the nurse responded, mentioning Julia and Laurence's 3 year old son.

"As rambunctious as ever, I'm afraid. He's keeping me just as busy as you'd expect between coming here and classes and raising him. I don't know how I'm even awake!" Julia joked as she came around the back and reached for the files to begin work.

"Boys will do that. If you had a daughter, it would be all so different." Janet joked.

"Where's Larry?" Julia asked of her husband.

"Exam room 4." Janet replied handing Julia the file of the woman in the exam room for filing.

Julia noticed that that same patient had been at the office just a week before. It was customary that she never really had interaction with the patients, and often time she never even saw their faces but she was always familiar with the names. This visit felt strange; that a patient would come back so soon, even this one, a woman who lived about 2 hours away and was so pregnant.

Julia suddenly worried that there was something wrong with the baby and even though it was frowned upon for her to be involved with the women that came in to see Laurence, she felt like her help might be needed. Julia rushed off to the exam room to see if perhaps she could be that help.

As Julia walked up to the door, she could her the soft murmuring of voice just on the other side. She grabbed the door knob and began to twist it to enter but something inside of her made her stop...and listen with the door still between them.

"I just wish I could find a way out, I wish I could have my child and I could just be free of him. The both of us. I don't even think he wants this baby!" The woman said to Laurence.

"I would do anything to make sure you and this baby were safe. Anything. What can I do? Name it!" Laurence said in a soft voice.

"You would really take us away? All of us?" She questioned.

"YES! I would do anything to keep you safe. There's nothing in this world that would stop me." Laurence said to Julia's shock.

"What if we did? What if we did just run away together? I could....I could do that and once I got a divorce, we could come back. Is that crazy?" The woman said knowing full well he was married too.

"This child you are carrying deserves to be born in peace and with two people that love it. I ..." Laurence said but stopped short.

"You ...what?" The woman asked as she noticed him thinking.

"I think I could be that other person. For you. For this baby. I have thought about it for a very long time and I can see us together. I really can." He said.

Julia, still listening on the other side, felt as if her heart had stopped. She looked around the office. It was as everyone was laughing at her. They would look at her, smile, and look away. She was beginning to sweat. She was beginning to feel her throat close. Her mind was racing. Her mind was furious. She could feel herself squeeze the woman's file in her hand, turning the papers into a tiny little accordion with crumpled up papers.

Julia had heard enough. She rushed back over to Janet's nurses' desk and dropped the woman's folder on the desk.

"Julia, my goodness what's the matter!?" Janet asked as she could see Julia looked white as a sheet.

"Tell Laurence, I wasn't feeling well and that I went home. I...." she said, looking as sick as the flu, "I'll see him at home." She finished.

Janet nodded and picked up the file of the woman, and the other patients that needed to be filed away that day and went to do it herself. She looked at what Julia did to the woman's paper work and didn't know what to make of it. Julia had practically crushed the forms and folder completely.

Janet opened the cabinet and pulled the "S" file log and placed the file that Julia had crushed when she heard her husband admitting he was willing to leave her into the log.

The file name tag read: "Stoddard, Elizabeth"

"No! What am I talking about? What am I even doing here? I have to go. I'm sorry I shouldn't have come here and said these things. I shouldn't have done this!" Elizabeth said back in the doctor's exam room.

"Elizabeth, please..." Laurence said as Elizabeth quickly grabbed her coat from chair and put it around her shoulders but did not slide her arms through.

"I'm having trouble in my marriage, but....it makes absolutely no sense for me to go on making more by being here and telling you the things I have. This was a mistake." Elizabeth said, having obvious second thoughts about containing further with Laurence.

"But what about us?" the doctor replied.

Elizabeth smiled at him, he had been so good to her, he was the best OBGYN around, and she had traveled so far to be treated by him, but the relationship had gone into an area even Elizabeth, for as unhappy as she was with Paul Stoddard, couldn't continue.

She reached over and patted his shoulder, and smiled.

"This was a mistake.", she said, then she quickly left the room leaving Laurence alone with a broken heart and Julia at home with only half the story in her angry mind.

Hours past and the night came quickly. Julia sat alone in a very dark living room smoking a cigarette. Her hair reflected a bright red by the single dim light in the room's corner that was shining over her like a halo. The smoke encircled around her like a volcano showing signs of a coming eruption.

The clock struck 10:30pm, and Laurence walked in. He looked around and noticed everything was quiet and strange. He walked into the living room and attempted to flick on the main lights but the lamps, except for the dim one in the corner, were all unplugged.

He noticed Julia in a chair smoking, and a glass of clear liquid in her hand.

"Julia? What's the matter?" He asked pensively.

She chuckled at his attempt at a cover up.

"Janet said you rushed home sick. Are you better?" He wondered as he noticed the half consumed bottle of vodka on the coffee table. "Where's Michael?" He asked of their son as he tried to turn on the unplugged lamp.

"Michael, is with your mother." Julia growled.

"So you're not better?" Laurence wondered as the boy was not home.

"I have been better, yes." Julia said cryptically.

"Julia, why are you drinking this? You're ill!" Lawrence said, grabbing the bottle from the table and attempting to scold her for her unhealthy choice still believing she was sick.

Laurence came closer to Julia, as he did he noticed something shining in her hand. The glimmer of the shiny mettle caught his eye, and he froze in place.

It was a gun.

"Julia.....why do you have that?" He said, his words slowly coming together as Julia looked at him through a filter of cigarette smoke.

"After the first one I thought it would never happen again. Then it did. Then I thought after Michael was born, it would never happen again....then it did. Then you promised me, that one was the last one. But then came another, and another after I found her out. After four affairs, I thought we were finally going to be Ok. Michael is bigger, you were more involved in our lives and then today...." Julia said puffing away at her cigarette as the ashes fell down to equally grey carpet.

"What are you talking about?" Laurence said as he carefully stepped back from Julia and the gun she pulled from their safe.

"Mrs. Stoddard. The mother that was at the office today. You think I don't know what the two of you are planning? You think I didn't accidentally hear you practically give your love ---the love you promised to ME on our wedding day---to her?? I did. I did Laurence! I heard every word and that is what made me ill!" Julia answered.

"Julia, listen. I think you've misunderstood what happened."Laurence said.

"Like I misunderstood all the others?"

"No, well...Julia, it isn't what you think at all! She's dealing with a husband who doesn't love her and doesn't want their baby. I was only wanted her to feel comfortable and secure. She's almost 9 months pregnant for god's sake!" Laurence said, his voice raised.

"I  heard you. I heard every word Larry. I know exactly what kind of comfort you wanted to give her. There's no use lying anymore. It's all over. It's all over." Julia said standing up.

"What do you mean?" Laurence said backing away from her.

"We can't go on like this, can we? I mean we could, but why? Why do you want to live here with me if you constantly want to replace with me someone. This Elizabeth person is the 5th woman or so? Why would I even allow that!" Julia said, stumbling on her own feet as she got closer to Laurence in the dark room with the gun still in her hand.

"Julia....you're drunk. You need to put the gun down." He said with his arms out keeping distance between them.

"What if I don't?" She said smirking drunkenly as she tried to make sense of where  he was standing.

"I need you to put the gun down Julia. Put it down." Laurence repeated himself.

"I don't think I want to do anything you want me to do. If it were up to you our family would be broken up and this way I can do just do it for you. I can just take away the one thing you feel you need to get rid of, I'm doing you a favor!" Julia said hi

"You don't know what you're saying! You're too drunk, Julia please!" Laurence begged.

"Why? Why Larry??? Why would I even ...why would you even?...Who cares! What's the difference? You want me gone, don't you? I can be gone Larry, I can be gone and you and Michael and this Elizabeth Stoddard, and her new baby, you can all be a happy family because I'll be dead!" Julia said as she put the gun up to her temple.

"JULIA STOP!" Laurence lunged at Julia, she became startled and in the blink of an eye, to block Laurence she put her own hands in front of her. The hand with the gun squeezed the trigger and shot a single bullet that hit Laurence in the chest.

He then stopped in his tracks and stared at Julia as she slowly came to understand what she had just done.

He chocked. He looked down at his white shirt, a small crimson circle of blood began to spread, bigger and bigger in circumference. Laurence fell to his knees.

"Larry. LARRY!!" Julia said as she quickly fell to his side.

He looked at her with a blank stare. His eyes began to glaze over. The blood was overwhelming and Julia, the shock quickly sobering her up, began to panic in what she had done.

"Larry, please stay with me, please breath. Larry, you can't leave us, please! Please Larry!"

Laurence was turning cold, his lips changed from their regular pink to a light blue. Julia just stared at him.  His eyes closed, his breath slowed, then it came to a complete stop.

Julia was covered in his blood. Her hands looked like they had been painted red. Her face had drops and smears and from her husbands blood.

Soon the windows began to flash red and blue. A neighbor had heard the gun shot and called the police. Julia stayed there, standing in the living room as the police quietly made their way in from the unlocked front door.

She was frozen in place. They police surrounded her and kept asking her what happened. What had occurred? What did she do?

They sat the bloodied Julia down on the sofa and covered Laurence with a sheet.

She looked up and the policeman closest to her and whispered to him what she had done.

"I killed him."

"Why? What made you do this?" The officer asked.

Julia did not answer. She looked at the police office in the face, her cheek smeared with blood of the man laying dead on the living room floor in a pool of that same blood, the father of her son.

"Mrs. Devereaux?" the officer asked using Julia' married name, trying to get her attention.

But it was too late. Julia had lost all sense of reality of what was really happening.

Her mind had closed off and nothing would again bring her back to that moment.

As they carried away her dead husband in what seemed like slow motion, the sound of the gun shot would ring off in Julia mind for years to come.

Over and over and over again the popping of their family hand gun haunted her mind.

It was like a blast of thunder in the middle of a storm.

COLLINWOOD PRESENT TIME

The gunshot sound similar to thunder brought Julia's mind back to that night. The night she murdered her own husband. Her son, Quinn's father, never knew the truth. Julia was tried and acquitted of Laurence's murder, she was found to have made a terrible mistake but Laurence's family refused to allow her to have any contact with her son Michael ever again. Julia, in her guilt agreed and moved to Philadelphia and got her degree and lived her life never seeing her son again.

It was only in 1967 that Julia realized the mysterious Collins family in the neighboring town of Collinsport was glued together by a matriarch by the name of Elizabeth Stoddard, and the baby she was carrying at the time was Carolyn. The strange and utter coincidental crossing of paths made Julia stick around Collinwood for years.

Now in the year 2018, Julia sat in Collinwood again, reminded of these events. How could she tell Quinn who she really was and what she had really done? How could she explain the past in a way that would make sense?

How would Carolyn feel knowing her mother and Julia's husband were so close, close enough that Julia believed they were having an affair, even though Elizabeth came to her senses before anything came of it?

Julia had kept it this everyone all this time, alone, harboring a secret and a murder that no one would understand.

Her long lost past had caught up with her, and now she had to deal with the fall out.
It was time for her to finally live in her truth and face the consequences.

Series 10/Chapter 5: DEMANDS OF THE DAMNED

A heavily clouded sky hovered over Collinsport that showed the face of a rain storm to come. The various shades of grey of the rain clouds mixed like the watercolors of one of Maggie's paintings. The clouds churned in the sky in volatile formations that made the guests at the Collinsport Inn restaurant shutter with the chill of the coming storm. Two of those guests were Vicky and her beloved son Curtis, who were just finishing up their dinner and were ready to escape back home just before the rain began.

"Why don't I rush over to get the car before the rain comes." Curtis said as his mother fixed her lipstick at the table after dinner.

"The valet can get it, hon." Vicky responded.

"They're busy, if we wait for them we might get stuck in the rain. I won't be long."

Curtis carefully folded his napkin and placed it on the table then dashed over to the valet booth in the lobby of the fancy hotel to retrieve his keys as he turned to leave he saw a vision of blond beauty standing directly in front of him blocking his way out of the lobby. It was the recently smitten Angelique or Cassandra as she had introduced herself the other night at The Blue Whale.

"Curtis." She said with a bright grin with no explanation as to why she was there.

Curtis' eyes shined like two diamonds, he licked his lips with a bit of nervous tension.

"Cassandra. I--uhh, Hi!" He answered nervously like a schoolboy talking to his playground crush.

"I'm beginning to think you're following me. What are the odds we'd bump into each other again so soon." She said, knowing full well she was the one following him.

"That's funny! Actually I'm having dinner with my mother. She's been in town for a while and I'm a terrible cook so I thought I'd spare her one of my awful grilled cheese sandwiches and spring for a nice dinner." He said again his nerves getting the best of him.

"That's very sweet." Angelique said again with her beautiful smile. "Are you on your way out?"

"We are, the rain looks like it's on it's way so I thought I'd get ahead the start before it came down. Are you here alone?" Curtis wondered.

"I am." she replied quite quickly, "I just came in for a drink at the bar." She replied. "They've changed this place so much. It's huge, so much more lavish." She continued.

Curtis looked at Angelique confused. In their first meeting she had alluded that she had been in town for a short time, and the hotel had been in it's current state for more than 30 years. How could "Cassandra" possible know what it looked like before that.

"How do you know what it looked like before?" He questioned as she quickly rebounded with a slick answer.

"Photos. Research. I do that kind of thing when I'm coming to a new place. I like to be sure I know what I'm in for. Especially little places like Collinsport." Angelique said, quickly correcting herself.

"Ah...Got-cha." Curtis said, beguiled by her beauty enough to believe anything. "Listen, since we're running into each other, maybe we can actually plan something together. You know, when you have time or...like whenever."

"Are you asking me on a date?" Angelique said teasing Curtis with a small little tap to the arm.

"A date? Uhh...", he was blushing,  "yeah, I guess. I mean if you're up for it." He replied.

"That would be great. Here...." Angelique said as she quickly wrote down a phone number on the back of a business card she pulled from the valet booth. "Let's meet soon."

"I'll call you. Yeah!" Curtis said smiling.

Angelique had fallen for Curtis, and she had certainly made an impression on him even if it were somewhat because of a little spell she put on him. Either way, she saw a light in him that she had not seen from anyone in centuries. There was a glow that came directly from inside of him that Angelique craved for herself. She wanted it, she wanted him, and she would do anything to protect him from all that threatened his pureness. She'd even go as far as double-crossing Barnabas for it.

This new infatuation was completely unexpected, but inside of her cold heart, Angelique knew this new passion of hers, Curtis Winters, was who she was meant to be with. His kindness, his love and energy was what would truly fulfill her, not the darkness she was surrounded by her whole life, but his pure light.

As the two continued to chat, Vicky came from around the corner wondering where Curtis had been the whole time. She passed a large potted plant and came face to face with a woman she had not seen in what felt like a millennia. Vicky's heart stopped--her body froze--her mind flipped like a picture book back to the past. Angelique Bouchard was standing in front of her talking to her son, still young, still beautiful, and most likely still dangerously evil.

Vicky quickly interrupted and pulled Curtis a step back away from Angelique.

"You!" Vicky said in a loud voice.

"Mom!" Curtis said, seeing his mother suddenly place herself between him and the woman he knew as Cassandra.

"Hello." Angelique said, playing as if she were confused, but knowing Vicky had recognized her.

"How did you.... How ...?" Vicky said, trying to sort out why she was looking at the face of the notorious Angelique Bouchard. "This can't be....you're dead....get away....get away from us!" She continued, her voice now echoing in the lobby.

"Mother what are you doing, what are you talking about? Keep your voice down." Curtis instructed as he pulled his mother back.

"Curtis, this woman is a viper! She's done horrible things. I can't even believe I'm seeing her, right here, in front of me again like this" Vicky said, turning back to Angelique who's face was suddenly turning angrier when she suddenly connected that these two were related.

"What? You have her confused with someone else. This is my friend Cassandra." Curtis answered.

"Oh, you're using that name again? How convenient. Her name isn't Cassandra." Vicky said, tossing her head back and forth from Curtis to Angelique as if she were watching a tennis match.

"You're making a scene. Her name is not Angelica....Angela...whatever. I don't know who you think she is, please, don't raise your voice!" Curtis said grabbing Vicky by both arms.

"Curtis, listen to me," Vicky said as Curtis saw the look on his mother's face was now serious. "you don't know what she is capable of. You don't know the hurt she can cause. I do, I know her!" Vicky exclaimed.

"Is there a problem madam?" the Maitre'd  asked Vicky as he rushed over from the restaurant side of the hotel.

"I'm sorry if I've caused any confusion, I don't want to upset anyone. I'll just cancel my plans and head home. Excuse me." Angelique said attempting to make her escape but not before Vicky grabbed her arm.

"Listen to me Angelique," Vicky said as she pulled Angelique back.

"Excuse me!" Angelique replied angrily.

"Don't you dare sink your hooks into my son. I swear to you, I'll..." Vicky began before being interrupted by Angelique.

"You'll what? I think threatening me with any form of violence Ms. Winters would be a very, very big mistake. Now let go of my arm." Angelique replied in a cold and calm manner.

Vicky stared her down as Angelique carefully removed Vicky's tightly gripped hand from around her arm.

"Cassandra, I'm sorry. I'll give you a call." Curtis replied as Angelique smiled softly and slowly made her way out of the lobby.

"You'll do nothing of the sort! Curtis, why aren't you paying attention to me? That woman's name is Angelique not Cassandra, and she's dangerous!" Vicky scolded.

"Excuse me but I think..." The maitre'd began to say before Curtis understood his body language.

"Don't worry, we're on our way out." Curtis answered as he grabbed Vicky by the arm and walked her out to the font of the hotel where tiny little sprinkles of rain began to drop on their heads.

"You have to stop treating me like I'm some kind of child, mother! I don't know what's gotten into you lately, but your superstitions have gotten the best you of. Cassandra is not this person you call Angelique and Barnabas Collins is dead! I told you I killed him!" Curtis reminded his mother as she shook her head in disbelief.

"No. No you didn't Curtis. And trust me, this woman is not who she says she is. I promise you. What can I do so you'll understand that I'm telling you the truth?" Vicky begged.

Curtis didn't know what to say. he was tired of the constant struggle dealing with his mother's past. It was always bubbling up in every aspect of his life. He thought that staking Barnabas in the heart months ago would have changed things, that everything would have been set right but everything felt like it had drastically gotten worse.

"We just need to get out of this rain and go home. I can't talk to you right now!" Curtis said as he quickly escorted his mother off to their car and out of the rain.

The danger was not so easily quieted, for in the shadows watching this exchange pass her by was Angelique now confronted with exposure on another front. On one side she had Barnabas hot on her heels of her new love interest Curtis, on the other, Victoria recognizing her---a surprise Angelique did not expect in her courting of Curtis.

Angelique would soon change that because when she removed Vicky's hand from her arm after she grabbed it a stray hair that had fallen to Vicky's sleeve found it self intertwined in Angelique's wicked fingers. Angelique twisted the long brown hair around her finger tighter and tighter and whispered a spell that would soon grip Vicky in a way that would eliminate her as an obstacle.

"Twist the lines of one woman's heart" Angelique whispered as the hair encircle her forefinger. "Find her quick, and then start, the willows fold, the sound of cold, tell Victoria Winters secrets silence foretold"....the spell continued.

Angelique closed her eyes while the rain began pouring down and just like a wisp of cold of spring wind, she vanished into thin air, her voice continued to echo the spell over and over again following Vicky and Curtis on their way home.

"Twist the lines of one woman's heart
Find her quick and then start,

The willows fold, the sound of cold
Tell Victoria winters secrets of silence foretold"

As they drove home Vicky and Curtis never said a single word to each other. He was furious at her behavior. She was concerned he was making a terrible choice in dating "Cassandra".

When they arrived home the wind cruelly rushed over them with an icy bite. Vicky stepped out of the car and shuttered in place as she looked up at the sky; the black, evil faced sky filled with rain clouds.

She cleared her throat that began to itch. There was a soreness. There was a pain in her throat. But she thought nothing of it and rushed into the apartment right behind Curtis never knowing that her own life was now in danger.

Collinwood. A mansion on the edge of a steep cliff. It's majesty soared over the small town below like a medieval castle towering over it's peasant subjects. In this rain, like on this evening it was even more grandiose. The windows reflected every splash of lightening that cracked the dark sky. And in the distance, a small car drove up the crooked drive way all the way the other small homes on the Collinwood land. It was Detective Loomis McGovern, back to tell David what he had discovered about Quinn Devereaux.

Siobhan quickly let Loomis in from the rain. She greeted him with a warm smile and took his soggy trench coat and hung it up just next to the main door in the foyer. She escorted him into the drawing room where David was sitting with a mug of tea to warm his own scratchy throat. In between cordial greetings flashes of the lightening painted the walls with the bright light illuminating the ghostly faces of the portraits on the wall. It had been a long time since Loomis had been up to Collinwood at night. Some things never change, he thought.

"You didn't have to come over in the evening to talk about Devereaux but thanks for coming. Tea?" David said offering him a mug as well.

"I thought it was important that you knew right away what I discovered. I hope I wasn't intruding on anything." Loomis said apologizing to both David and Siobhan.

"No, not at all. I just put John down. Carolyn, and my mother are upstairs, and Alex is out, so it's fine." Siobhan responded.

"You must of found something big in Quinn's background to suggest that she's involved in something dirty to get the DA to drop the charges on Jeffery to rush over here." David thought.

"Actually, I didn't see anything like that, but I did see something else that seems a bit strange to me. Maybe strange is not the right word." Loomis said handing David the background report.

David furrowed his brow in confusion and took the papers from Loomis' hand. He quickly shuffled through them to find the various places Quinn had lived, names of her former employers, then the names of her family members who were, by-and-large, all deceased.

"I don't get it." David said confused. "What am I looking for?"

"You don't see the name listed as Quinn's paternal grandmother?" Loomis asked as David checked again.

"Julia Devereaux? What about her?" David asked still not seeing the connection, but Siobhan perked up now more interested.

"Julia H. Devereaux. I thought that name seemed too coincidental. That perhaps there was more to that than just a letter. H can be anything really. But I just had a hunch. I checked into it. It's definitely what I thought." Loomis confessed.

"You're not suggesting my mother Julia is Quinn's grandmother. That....that just can't be." Siobhan said.

"It is, I'm afraid." Loomis said.

"Julia H, is Julia Hoffman?" David said again bewildered by everything. "I just.... Julia never told us anything about her life before she came to Collinwood. I just imagined...." David said before he was interrupted.

"My ears are burning." Julia said, as she walked into the drawing room upon hearing her name from the foyer.

Loomis' mouth dropped. He had no idea Julia was there. He had always assumed this news would be shocking to Julia's surviving family, not a surviving Julia.

"What...What's going on here?" Loomis questioned as he stood up and looked at Julia alive and well in front of his very eyes.

"Julia Hoffman, how do you do?" She said extending her hand to Loomis.

"How? How can she be here? According to these forms, Hoffman..." Loomis said turning back to David confused by the living woman who's death certificate read 1987.

"There was a mistake." Siobhan quickly said. "My mother is alive and well. She had been only presumed dead all those years ago."

"But that was over 30 years ago. How does she look..." Loomis again said before Julia interrupted.

"I'm a scientist Mr..."

"Detective McGovern."

"Detective McGovern. I specialize in psychology and I've also dabbled in rare blood disorders that have a surprising effect on the genetics....its a fountain of youth if you will." She said to Loomis' still shocked reaction. "Now will someone care to explain why there's a detective at Collinwood on such a late part of the evening?"

David and Siobhan looked at each other unsure of how to bring up to Julia that they knew she had a family before she had ever set foot on Collinwood soil. They weren't sure how she would take it. There was a reason she had kept this family from them all these years, and bringing up the revealed past would most certainly sting Julia, who was as secretive as they came.

"Mother, David had Detective McGovern looked into Jeffery Shaw's lawyer. He thought that there might be something underhanded going on between this lawyer and the DA because they dropped the murder charges for Christopher's death." Siobhan began.

"Oh, and what did he find?" Julia wondered.

"Well, they found you." Siobhan answered.

"Me? I don't understand." Julia replied.

There was an awkward pause between the conversations. No one quite knew how to bring it up, but David ripped the band-aid off and laid it all out.

"Julia, listen, what Loomis found was ...well, information about your and your past. I know how very guarded you are about --everything-- but...I need to ask you: before you came to Collinwood did you have a family? Did you have a son named Michael?" David questioned.

Julia stood in the center of the room with three faces staring back at her waiting for her reply. The wind and rain pushed the branches of the trees outside scratching the glass on the windows. Julia remained stone faced and still.

"Mother?" Siobhan asked, waiting for Julia to reply.

"I don't want to talk about it." Julia said quickly turning to face away from the prying eyes.

"Julia, you should know that we didn't just find the names of your son and his father. We discovered that the lawyer we were investigating is actually this Michael Devereaux's daughter. In essence she's your grand-daughter Julia." David said as Julia turned around quickly as to notion of a granddaughter.

"That's impossible, I ..." Julia said pausing in mid-sentence as the thunder continued to roll over the mansion.

"What? You what?" Siobhan asked grabbing her mother's hands.

"I don't want to talk about it." Julia said again.

"Loomis, thank you for coming by. As you can see this is a sensitive family issue. I really appreciate your help." David told Loomis seeing that Julia was feeling put out by the news.

Loomis nodded his head, understanding the discomfort in the room, and quickly made his exit, leaving Julia, Siobhan and David to grapple the confusing story.

"Julia, she's your granddaughter. Her name is Quinn Devereaux and she basically is alone in this world. But now she has family. You, Siobhan, me, John. Don't you want to reconnect with her?" David questioned, knowing how hard it was for him to lose his mother at a young age and feeling the painful icy distant love of his father his whole life.

"What happened, mother, tell me." Siobhan said, her own psychologist had firmly in place.

"I was married, yes." Julia said, the thunder crashing just as her sentence finished.

"And it..... didn't work out?" Siobhan asked.

Julia  paused  before she replied attempting to find the words to describe her first marriage but only could muster a soft "no." in response wit her arms tightly wound around her own body.

"What happened?" David asked.

Julia turned and looked at David and Siobhan both in their eyes. She became suddenly frustrated with the questions and the prying into her past. She tore through them both but Siobhan grabbed Julia by the hand and held her in place.

"Mother, please! We have to straighten this out. Don't you want to meet your granddaughter?" Siobhan questioned.

"All you need to know is that I was married, I had a son, and things did not work out with his father Laurence and myself. I drove myself into my work and eventually found myself at Windcliff. I was happy. My son Michael was better off without me. That's all you have to know." Julia said, as she stormed off upstairs leaving Siobhan and David with more questions than answers in the drawing room.

Now alone in her room, Julia nervously paced her bedroom. In all the years of her life, she had been able to keep her past a secret. No one ever thought to go digging around. No one ever thought to even question who she was or where she came from. The idea of these revelations coming to light made Julia sick to her stomach. The truth could never be revealed. Never.

The rain continued to pour like a small waterfall down Julia's bedroom window. She looked out onto the dark ground of Collinwood and thought about her secrets. The past had been buried for decades and now, it had been unearthed like the opening of a grave. The truth about Julia's husband and son was much more macabre than anyone really understood, and even if Siobhan and David discovered the truth about Julia's past it would devastate the image she had always worked so hard to keep up. The strong willed, powerful woman that nothing, not even a man like Barnabas, a creature of the shadows, could shake.

But this shook her.

Julia sat on her bed and began to think on her past. A phase of her life she believed to be long dead and buried in the depths of her mind. She worked so hard for so many years to keep these secrets from ever escaping the realms of her past, but now those ghosts were coming back for her; the icy hand of death and lies had reached back from beyond time and touched Julia's present, her mask about to drop, and she did not like it one bit.

The night sky over Collinsport was splashed with the cracking of thunder shattering the peace of the rain falling to the ground. In this downpour of a early spring storm, Serena Bellmoore stealthy made her way into the Collinsport Inn. Her covered herself in a dark trench-coat and black silk scarf over her hair. She was there at the request of Jeffery Shaw. It was invitation he insisted on.

She hopped into the elevator and made her way up to the hotel penthouse where Jeffery and Andrew had been staying. She knocked on the lacquered white door with golden door knob. She watched as it turned from the other side opening the door revealing Jeffery dressed in all black with the front room behind him dimly lit with only a few lamps lighting her way in.

"Be quick." Serena said removing her scarf from her head.

"The rain comes down so hard in these parts don't you think?" Jeffery said, purposefully stalling his time with Serena.

"I said be quick. What do you want Jeffery?" She questioned as she sat down on the plush white hotel sofas.

"The DNA that is flowing through my son's body has done it's job for the most part." Jeffery began as he slowly turned in his all black outfit looking as if he was floating in the dim light of room. "But there are some slight side effects that are more than I predicted." Jeffery said alluding to Andrew's transitions.

"Like what?" Serena questioned.

"The lycan DNA hasn't only given my son a second chance at life by corrected and healing the damaged cells in his body, it...." Jeffery paused because he couldn't believe what he was going to say next. "....it's also mutated his cells."

Serena's eyes widened. Her heart felt like it sunk into her stomach. The idea of what was in her mind about the word "mutated" could only mean one thing.

"He's changing?" She said softly fearing the confirmation that was surly to come from Jeffery's mouth.

"Yes." he answered quickly.

Serena got up quickly from the sofa and grabbed her scarf.

"No, I can't be involved anymore. Do you understand how dangerous this whole situation is? When we researched Sebastian's life, when you wanted his DNA, we read about what happened to his body, we read about all the things that could happen. I can't be apart of any of this anymore." Serena said as she started to make her way to the penthouse door.

"It's too late Serena, you already are. And the good thing about that is, no one knows just how involved you and Sebastian, really are. All that can change with one phone call. I can make sure that everyone, including Maggie Evans, go down. I'm not the only one with Christopher's blood on my hands...you're the one that took him instead of Sebastian like I asked you." Jeffery said. "So, if you want to keep it that way, if you want to keep the DA out of Maggie and Sebastian's hair, I suggest you stay here and listen to what I have to say." Jeffery said as the storm sent another thunder clap over the hotel flashing brightly in the hotel room.

"I said no." Serena replied.

"The Collins family is out for blood Serena, and now that I've been cleared of any wrong doing, you can bet their money and power in this state will put pressure on the district attorney to find someone responsible for Chris' death, and if it's not me...well..." Jeffery said, causing Serena to pause.

"I should have never helped you. I should have gone to the police when I hit Andrew with my car all those years ago and just gone to jail instead of dealing with you and your sick mind." Serena scolded, but she relented and sat back down to listen to Jeffery.

"I know, it's all so horrible. So, are you ready to hear of what I need from you?" Jeffery said smugly.

Serena looked at him and gave him a silent motion with her hand and facial expression showing that she had no choice, he had put her in a spot, there was no way she would let Maggie and Sebastian get tangled up in Jeffery's games.

"I thought you'd see it that way. Now, this shouldn't be too hard for you to do. The Collins family isn't as innocent in all this as they may seem. Christopher's altered DNA wasn't some insane environmental accident, and he certainly wasn't born that way, no, his mother was sicker than you think I am." Jeffery explained.

"How?" Serena questioned.

"Further reading in this log book in the research I found," Jeffery said, tossing Serena a book of notes he had taken on Sebastian, "shows that Sebastian's DNA, which is tied to Christopher's was synthetically created by a doctor named Kimberly Grayson-Collins." He finished, as Serena's eyes lifted when he said the Collins name.

"I thought that would spark your interest." He continued.

"So, Christopher was created that way too?" She wondered as she flipped through the notes.

"Yes, his mother planned to use Christopher as his lycan alter-ego to her advantage. It didn't work out, as we can see, but there are vials of antidote she created somewhere in her old office that I need you to retrieve. This serum can control Andrew's changes and it's only in one place." He explained.

"Where?" She asked.

"Kimberly's office in Collinwood." He explained.

"You have to be kidding me. You want me to, what? Break into that mansion and take vials of serum for you? How am I even superposed to do that? I wouldn't know where to start." Serena said.

"I'll help." A voice said from just over the living room area in the hotel suite.

Both Serena and Jeffery turned to see that Andrew himself had been listening the whole time.

"Son." Jeffery said standing up and coming over to Andrew who angrily rebuffed his father.

"Andrew, I..." Serena began to say, it was her first time really speaking to him in years after his coma.

"I'll help you get what I need to correct this, or make it better or whatever." Andrew said coldly to the two people who made him this way.

"I don't know if that's a good idea, son. It's not only the moon's pull and power that can alter you into ..." Jeffery paused before..."Alter you." He corrected himself, unable to call a werewolf by it's name. "There are other factors." Jeffery added

"Like what?" Serena questioned as the rain continued to pour.

"Stress, the amount of stress Andrew goes through can alter him as well. This would be too stressful." Jeffery said.

"No. If anyone is going to make sure that I don't hurt anyone with what you have done to me, It's going to be ME. No one else. I can do this, and I will do this. I'm taking control of myself, and making sure that this is the last time you are ever involved with my body. This is it." Andrew stated matter of factly.

"Well?" Serena said tying her scarf around her head as she began to make her exit.

"No. You're helping me too." Andrew ordered.

"You said you could do this?" Serena said attempting to skate Scot-free from her part in his altered state.

"You're just as guilty as he is. If you hadn't taken Christopher he would be alive today, and he's not. So you're to blame for that. So you're going to help me. I have a way into the mansion." Andrew said.

"How do you have a way?" Jeffery asked.

Andrew looked at his father who didn't know that Chris' memories were now his memories. Chris's past and life were now, too, apart of him. What Chris saw, Andrew could now see as if he saw it with his own eyes. Collinwood was not a strange place to Andrew even though it should have been.

His eyes knew the layout perfectly, and Alexandra, his new friend, would be his key in the front door.

Without replying to his father, Andrew pulled his cell phone out of his pocket and dialed Alex's number.

She answered.

"Hey! Alex, it's Andrew?---I'm good, good, so listen, I was wondering if we could get together............tomorrow evening? Yes, that's ....that's perfect. I'll come by your place and we'll make a date of it ok? Great.... See you tomorrow."  Andrew said as his quick phone call finished.

Jeffery and Serena stood in the hotel suite in silence.

"This is going to be done my way, and my way only." Andrew said, as the thunder and lightening clapped again, illuminating and flashing on Andrew's face.

****

As she usually did around 10pm, Carolyn lay in bed reading. Her warm lavender bedding caressed her exposed feet and the rain soothed her while she flipped back page after page of Wuthering Heights. Her mind felt calm even though a storm raged just outside her window, in more ways than one.

As she began to fade off to sleep, she felt the staring of eyes upon her from the darkest corner of her room. She knew what this meant. She knew who it was. He had come to her like this before. It was how they usually had their most private and intimate talks and consolations.

As the thunder clapped and the flicker of lightening flashed in the room she saw him standing still in the corner staring at her with his cold eyes. Her decades old ancestor: Barnabas Collins.

Carolyn closed her book and said nothing to him, but stared back, fearless and sure of herself allowing only the fire in her fireplace to speak for her in crackles and sparks of burning wood. She continued to stay silence, defiant in his restraint to speak first, but within minutes he relented, something he always did when it came to Carolyn. He never could get one over on her.

"Wuthering Heights brings me such good memories." He said stepping out of the shadows.

"Why wouldn't it? It's about a man struggling to find his place in the world around him, doing all he can to connect to the one he loves even after she's gone from this world. I'd say it's practically your biography, give or take a few deaths." Carolyn mused.

Barnabas smirked and sat on the white sofa in her bedroom suite just across from the bed. He placed his cane firmly between his legs, his hands clasped over it's wolf handle and looked at her as if he wanted to know why, why would she and Julia attempt to kill him, but deep down he knew why. He just couldn't bring himself to admit he had caused all of their pain in the first place. Especially Carolyn's. Jude's death was solely squared on Barnabas' head.

And she knew it.

"Why are you here Barnabas? What do you want?" She said breaking the silence between them.

"We haven't had a chat in a while, Cousin. There is much we should discuss, I assume you'd like to get things out in the open as well." He said, his Cheshire cat grin blaring wide hoping she'd confess to conspiring with Julia to destroy him.

"As a matter of fact I do, I do have something to tell you." She answered in between rumblings of the storm outside.

"Very well." Barnabas said as he sat back to listen.

"I know what you did to Jude, I know everything there is to know. There's nothing you can say to me that will take away the anger that I feel towards you for killing him. To think, the only way you'd get what you wanted was for him to be out of the picture so that we'd all come back to Collinwood and recreate some sort of family just for you....it's stupid. And Selfish. Both things I can't put past you. I just wish ...." she paused before saying what she truly wished, that he was dead.

"Wished what? What do you wish for Carolyn?" Barnabas questioned feeling exactly what she really wanted to say.

"It doesn't matter. Nothing I really feel really matters to you anyway. You have no heart, only some sort of withered piece of muscle that drives you into more and more madness as the years pass you by." Carolyn answered.

"I'm sorry you feel that way, and I'm sorry you believe that I had anything to do with Jude's death." Barnabas said, trying to avoid the truth of what he had done.

Carolyn shook her head in disbelief that Barnabas was still denying it even after it was clear she had made up her mind and knew the truth.

"There really isn't much more we need to talk about, Barnabas, you have always know that I valued the way we could always be truthful with each other. After years and years of secrets in this house it was good to know that we could all at least live in honesty --between  us. But now I don't know how I can move forward knowing what I know." Carolyn said.

"Funny." Barnabas quipped.

"What is?"

"The idea of honesty, is such a important trait. Something that you do seem to value but I'm curious as know if you only value it those who are honest with you.... but you're not honest with them." He said hinting at something he knew too.

Carolyn's face changed. Something in her told her she was in danger. Barnabas stood up from the sofa and walked over to her bedside and grabbed her book. He smirked and began to flick through the pages.

There was a thunderclap, a spark of light from outside lit the windows up in bright white stormy light highlighting the worry written all over Carolyn's face.

"The main character in this book struggles, you see, he struggles to find his true place in society and often times finds it hard to trust those around him because, my dear cousin, a lot of times those that are the closest to you are the ones that end up betraying you the most. Wouldn't you agree?" He said slamming the book closed.

Carolyn said nothing.

"How's Julia? I know you two have been close. I know that you're the reason she's no longer with me, at the old house and here, with you....happy. Safe. Comfortable." Barnabas said, his voice calm and cold.

"She's getting more acquainted with Siobhan and little John. It was better for her to be here." Carolyn said, her words coming from her mouth slowly as if the caution would slow down Barnabas' next move.

He sat on her bed.

"You two have gotten close then, haven't you?" He said handing her the book back.

"Somewhat." She answered, she could tell now he knew that they had tried to kill him. She could see it in his eyes, she could tell there was a darkness in him that she hadn't seen in decades, something that felt more sinister than ever before.

"I don't like to feel betrayed Carolyn. Not by anyone. Especially not by the ones I have fought so hard to keep protected from the creature that I am. I don't like to be made a fool of and you and Julia have certainly done that. You know what happens when I begin to feel cornered....you know what happens, Carolyn, when I begin to feel as if I can no longer trust those closest to me. So I ask you...why.....why would Julia decide to do what she did..." he asked in a groan, then suddenly he lunged at her throat and growled "and why did you help her!!"

Carolyn swung her hand back and slapped Barnabas across the face with her book. The book flew out of her hand and crashed into the lamp exploding the bulb and breaking the base in a large pop of sound, this left the room pitch black with only the light from the fire glowing an orange/yellow haze across the large bedroom.

Barnabas took a breath after backing away from the blow to the face.

Within seconds of the altercation Carolyn leapt out of her bed and rushed to the open bedroom door but not before Barnabas made a fist with his hand. His leather gloves squeaked as the leather constricted around thick fingers. With this gesture the bedroom door slammed shut and locked, barring Carolyn from exiting.

She turned and looked at her ancient cousin who had a very small wound near his eye where the corner of the book sliced his skin open.

Barnabas removed his leather glove and felt the cut on his eye, a small drop of blood smeared on his finger, he licked it off and the wound began to heal itself and then vanished as if were never there.

"You're afraid of me." Barnabas said as he slowly made his way over to a shivering Carolyn who was standing in the orange glow of the fireplace.

"You're dangerous. I have always known that, but I never thought that you'd..." she said before he interrupted.

"That'd I'd what? That'd I'd come for you?" Barnabas giggled. "We all have our reckoning Carolyn. And helping Julia attempt to destroy me was perhaps your biggest mistake. But I'm not going to hurt you." He said as the tears began to well up in Carolyn's eyes.

"You've changed so much." Carolyn said in a whisper.

"I will always be here to remind you just how close you came to death, just how close I came to make sure Alexandra lost another parent. Now, my dear cousin, you'll remember where you stand in this place. Collinwood was my home first, and I decide who stays and who goes." Barnabas asserted.

"Don't you dare threaten me, Barnabas Collins, we all sleep at one point or another, even you. I wouldn't be so bold with words, I can make a stake out of just about anything." Carolyn said, her words burrowing deep into Barnabas' mind.

She was indeed a formidable opponent, but Barnabas' plans with Angelique were now taking center stage. He would take control over his childhood home, he would overpower everyone who stood in his way, it was only a matter of time, and Carolyn would live to fight another day.

"I see." Barnabas said replacing the glove on his hand. "Then it seems we've come at an impasse. You stand on one side and I on the other, but Carolyn only one of us can succeed at what we are attempting to do. Please don't forget that the strong willed Collins blood that flows through your veins has flowed through mine much, much longer and with much more ruthless rage." He said as her bedroom rood unlocked and slowly slid open revealing the darkened hallway.

The vampire, cold and angry was working through all the betrayals he had suffered at the hands of the people he believed loved him. He slowly made his way back to shadowy corner of Carolyn's room from which he came. He turned slowly to his shaking cousin, who never moved from her spot in front of the door, her arms firmly at her side, her legs solid in place as if to tell him she was not going anywhere either.

Then he smiled at her.

"I'll be by to see my grandson John very soon. I'm sure Siobhan wouldn't mind....Oh! And one more thing...." he paused. "Tell Julia I'll be back for her soon."

And with that cryptic warning for Julia, the woman Angelique made him he believe stabbed him with a stake, Barnabas disappeared. His body dissolved into the black shadows of the night leaving Carolyn alone in the room She fell to the bedroom floor releasing all of the tension she had held up while Barnabas stood there.

Carolyn's body was trembling, her mind was racing. Nothing could make her feel better about what had just happened, not even the soothing rain, or the soft white carpet her terrified body tried to seek comfort in. Her mind could only see the cold and vicious truth: Someone would have to end this curse forever and that meant Barnabas Collins could not survive.

Series 10/Chapter 4: CONNECTING THE DOTS

A night filled with with a full moon was always a sign that the fates were sending a diabolical rush of energy towards earth. The natural ebb and flow of the sea tethered to the moon's pull, too, woke the senses. Especially in the town of Collinsport, where things would soon turn upside when knowledge of deceit broke into the wilds of the imagination.

At the Old House Barnabas sat comfortably, if not impatiently, for his own  house guest to arrive. Angelique had obtained her way around town without being noticed, and on her way home from her brief encounter with Curtis, she was feeling a bit freer than Barnabas felt comfortable with.

She opened the front door and slowly made her way into the foyer. Her youthful beauty was like a shimmering star in the gloom of the ambiance of the Old House that had updated it's look, but remained never the less antique.

Barnabas, like a father catching his rebellious daughter sneaking in past curfew, cleared his throat loud enough for Angelique to notice him awaiting her.

"Hmm..." She snickered as she walked into the drawing room. "Have you been waiting all day?" She asked sarcastically.

"Where were you?"

"Barnabas, really, you should learn to trust more." She joked.

"You shouldn't be away from Collinwood, someone might see you in town. That could be catastrophic." He scolded.

"For whom? Me or you? Because really Barnabas, I could care less what happens to you. As long as I get what I want---" She began to say erroneously neglecting the fact she actually needed him to get what she wanted.

Barnabas angrily stood up and grabbed her by the arm.

"NOW YOU LISTEN TO ME---!!" He shouted her arm firmly in place in his large hand. But just as their bodies touched, a jolt of energy rushed from Angelique's body into Barnabas'. He began to see her entire day and where she had been and what she had seen. It was like a movie playing in his mind. He could see her at the Blue Whale, he would almost taste the beer that she was drinking, and a man, she was with a man.

Just before Barnabas could see the man's face Angelique pulled away.

"Don't you ever touch me again." She growled, know their bodies worked like two exposed wires when they touched, the powerful energy between them was explosive at times.

"What have you done?" Barnabas questioned in an equally as viscous and suspicious growl as he stepped forward cornering her between a piece of furniture and the wall.

"Oh, get away from me." She said brushing him off fearlessly.

"Angelique, listen to me, there is too much at stake for you to be dizzying off into some other twisted tryst for all the town to see." He snarled with a twinge of jealously of the man she was with.

"Oh please, Barnabas, what year do you think this is? It's not 1869 anymore, it's not even 1969 anymore. This is a new millennium women of this age do as they please and need absolutely no permission to do it." Angelique stated matter of factly.

"Perhaps, but they don't run their lives under the guise of someone else with their own magical powers...that, my dear, very much only pertains to you. Whom, I might ad, has a pension to self-destruct. At any rate, Angelique, I have decided that I indeed need you too. Just as you need me." Barnabas told his witch ex wife.

"Oh? And what pray tell, brought you to this so obvious of a conclusion?" Angelique asked smugly as she moved away from her cornered position in the room.

"Something that I overheard at Collinwood. Julia and Carolyn talking privately." Barnabas informed to a suddenly worried Angelique who sat herself carefully by the hearth.

"Oh? What did they say?" She wondered, worried Julia had admitted no fault.

"Julia denied she had anything to do with the attempt on my life, which directly contradicts what you told me you saw. Isn't that interesting?" He replied as he followed her to the fireplace.

"Barnabas, really! Do you think she would just admit to Carolyn that she tried to kill you--and failed? They've clearly come to some sort of pact to make sure you're eliminated, and if one fails, how would that look to the other?" Angelique said attempting to continue to conceal that Curtis was the true attempted assassin.

Barnabas couldn't stand the site of Angelique, she was too much of a stain from his past. He leered at her with a cold look while she spoke as if his eyes could strangle her, but he had to admit, she gave him information that he needed, and with her powers and they could truly take over Collinwood. That was the truth, and Angelique wouldn't lie if it benefited her.

The truth was, she was lying to benefit her. Keeping Curtis, the true person who tried to kill the Barnabas out his cross-hairs meant she could finally find true love, with Curtis, but at the same time she needed Barnabas' powers to unite with her's so that the two of them could grow powerful. A deal that she would double cross with her continued lies about Julia.

As the fire in the hearth crackled on and lit the drawing room of the old house in an orange glow, Angelique couldn't help but think of how much she loved and obsessed over Barnabas for so many years. And now, all of that seemed to be gone, from her side now too. She needed him now more for the convenience of power than for love. But their connection still remained no matter how twisted it was.

"You look at me with such disdain." She said softly as he continued to stare and her mind continued to go back into those days that she loved him.

"I wish you had never come back here." He said suddenly standing up and walking towards the windows.

"Barnabas Collins you are truly one of the most ungrateful people I have ever met. I saved your life, remember? On several occasions! If it weren't for me you'd be laying in a wormy grave, the only thing left of you would be dust and bones!" She replied.

"And maybe that would have been better! Maybe Julia and Carolyn are right, maybe I should be dead. Maybe this world is better off with out me!" He said in a sudden emotional release that Angelique was not prepared for.

She took a second allowing him to compose himself and walked over to where he was standing. She put her hand on his shoulder.

"Then we would never have had our beautiful daughter, Evangeline." Angelique said using their daughter Claudia's true birth name.

"She's better off with out us." He said his tone now calmer, to Angelique's frustration.

"Listen to yourself Barnabas? What do you want? I can give you so much, more than you ever dreamed and for such a small price. All you have to do is work with me and we can make it happen, but these emotional flip-flops have to go. Do you understand? You're either in or out and trust me you do not want to miss out on this. Think of the powers we can obtain if we work together! Imagine it Barnabas! Imagine the strength you'd have? You could control everything your heart desires!" Angelique said again hoping Barnabas would come back from his emotional episode.

"I've agreed to work with you, but how can I trust you for sure, what will you give me to prove to me that we will be a team no matter what?" Barnabas asked his words becoming music to Angelique's ears despite his well earned hesitation.

"As soon as the other's are taken care of, as soon as they've become obsolete and you have all of those you love the most near you forever: Julia, Siobhan and baby John, I will disappear. Forever. Never to return again. With our powers united, I can do as I please, and you can do as you please." Angelique proposed.

Angelique's lies were now firmly placed in Barnabas' head. For him to take control of the minds of Julia, Siobhan and baby John, so that they could all live together forever, as one family unit, the others had to be destroyed, and the only way they could do this was if Barnabas and Angelique joined forces. No one could survive, this would give him his freedom with his beloved family members and Angelique would gain more powers though him and money....and she could secretly run off with Curtis.

Her plan seemed fool-proof.

But Barnabas knew better than to believe anything Angelique had to tell him at face value, but he was in no position to question things further, after all he did hear Julia and Carolyn himself decide that it would be better for all of them if he was no longer around. That in and of itself was proof enough that one of them was the culprit.

"What do we do first?" Barnabas questioned.

Angelique smiled, like the cat that ate the canary. She was practically salivating at the notion at just how powerful her magic would  become once she and Barnabas fully joined forces.

"Tomorrow night will be the a new moon. At the stroke of midnight just before the day switches in time, we'll ceremoniously join together as one unit in spirit ---then the deaths can take place and you'll have your sweet family all to yourself, and I will have my freedom."

"Marry you?" He said disgusted.

"Symbolically, mon chere, just symbolically." she said again in a patronizing voice.

Barnabas wanted his family. He wanted it badly, its all he ever wanted. To feel like a family again. To feel normal. To feel himself. It was something he chased after for centuries. Could Angelique really give this to him?

Angelique's proposition was too good to pass up.

She turned and began to walk towards her the staircase to her room. But not before Barnabas too relayed his own perfect message.

"Oh, and Angelique..." he said as he turned to look out of the front windows into the dark night.

"Yes?"

Barnabas did not turn from the widows he was looking out of. He could see her in the reflection of the glass.

"If I discover you have double crossed me, I'll kill him." Barnabas said in a sudden cryptic voice that proved the darkness inside of him could always come out without warning.

"What? Kill who?" Angelique asked confused and nervously.

"Your new paramour.... Curtis Winters." Barnabas replied in an evil tone that shocked Angelique.

When she touched him again on the shoulder the face of the man she had drinks with finally appeared in his mind, the face was revealed and the vision of her night was completed.

Her secret was out, and Barnabas now had deadly leverage and Curtis was the bait he needed to keep Angelique in line.

Angelique's face scowled, her mind froze, she too knew that these were the dangerous games to be played. She nodded her head in agreeing to his final request and went up to her room leaving Barnabas at the windows gazing at the dark night alone.

In the morning, the sun drenched sky pushed all of the clouds away revealing a blinding sapphire sky. At the Collinsport Inn, Jeffery Shaw's lawyer Quinn Devereaux was standing under the canopy of the entrance to the building while her bags were being loaded into her car. She nervously paced back and fourth near the driver side of her car until she saw a familiar woman enter through the sliding glass doors of the lobby. It was Alexandra. Quinn had remembered her from the Police station weeks before when she went bail out Jeffery. Their first meeting did not go well, as Alex burned holes though Quinn for being the lawyer for the man that killed her boyfriend.

"Damn it." Quinn said knowing Alex being at the hotel where Jeffery was staying could on mean trouble for her client. "I'll be right back, can I just leave it here. I wont be two seconds!" Quinn asked of the Bellhop as she dashed into the lobby to stop Alex from entertaining a particular dangerous situation with how Andrew was strangely behaving just the night before.

"Wait! Wait! Miss!' Quinn shouted, as she entered the lobby in the attempted stall.

Alex turned around and saw Quinn, then she rolled her eyes.

"I remember you." Alex said with a twinge of snark.

"What are you doing here?" She asked as Alex slightly adjusted her body language as if to say she was staying put.

"What's it to you? My business is with Jeffery Shaw." Alex responded.

"Well, he's my business. He's my client." Quinn replied. "So maybe you should just tell me what you need from him and perhaps I can get it."

"Need? What I need from him is to leave this place. My cousin David called me a little while ago and told me that Jeffery wasn't going to be charged for my boyfriend's death. Not to mention no charges are going to be brought up for what he's done to his own son." Alex answered to Quinn's surprise as Alex mentioned Andrew.

"His son?" Quinn questioned, pretending she didn't see Andrew foaming at the mouth half wolf, half man the night before.

"Listen I don't have time for you to stall me." Alex said.

"Miss, wait... look, I'm just doing my job Ok? And besides what good does it do you to go up there and cause a scene. Jeffery isn't going to get taken in on any charges, it's a done deal." Quinn reassured Alex.

"Thanks to you I assume." Alex said, calling out Quinn's lawyer handy work. "Let me ask you, do you really think he shouldn't see some kind of repercussion for someone's death? Not to mention kidnapping and not giving his own son the right medical attention? How can you defend him?" Alex asked, her voice now raised.

Quinn looked around the transformed Collinsport Inn Lobby. It's walls had become so much more posh and pristine over the years with its foam green carpet and french moldings. The people there, workers and patrons, were now staring, unsure of what drama was unfolding in front of their very own eyes.

"I don't want to make a scene, and again, I'm sure that's the last thing you want to do. Especially since everyone here practically knows your whole family..." Quinn said as Alex interrupted.

"They do. They do know my family. They also know that even though you're a very good lawyer and seem to be able to get murderers off the hook that justice will be done, one way or another." Alex said in a strange warning.

"And what exactly does that mean?" Quinn replied stepping closer to Alex showing no fear of her threat.

"This is far from over. Jeffery Shaw will pay for what he's done to Chris and to Andrew." Alex finished.

"Miss Thorne, stay away from him. Ok? Just stay away from him!" Quinn blurted out. "You shouldn't get too close....he's.... dangerous."

Alex couldn't believe that Quinn was practically admitting Jeffery was dangerous, even after she got him off murder charges, but the lawyers warning were in a way two-fold. It may have seemed to Alexandra that Quinn was talking about Jeffery, but in reality Quinn was talking about Andrew.

Alex then pushed passed Quinn. As their shoulders brushed, the repressed magical powers Alex inherited from the witch Claudia during her possession came rushing back in one full swoop. When Alex was stressed or angry or sad, she was able to allow this magic to surface more--as her guard was down.

The flashes from Quinn's body filled Alex's mind--they were visions. Visions of what Quinn had seen just hours before in the hotel room. Andrew on the floor. Barley breathing. Jeffery over him trying to help. She saw more of Andrew, his wolf transition, then she saw Jeffery inject Andrew with the serum. It was all played in what seemed like a 2 second movie just for Alexandra to see.

Alex stood in the lobby just staring at Quinn, her own breathing now in panic mode.

Quinn stared back at Alex confused and awkward.

"Are ...you ok?" Quinn asked.

Alex stood there for another two seconds unable to speak in shock of what she saw in her vision.

"Andrew....Andrew...is he ok?" Alex asked.

Quinn paused unsure of how to answer, as she had no idea why Alex would suddenly ask about Andrew in that manner, a manner that was clearly formed out of concern.

"He's..... fine." Quinn said, lying through her teeth.

Alex, unsure of what to believe turned and made her way towards the main door of the hotel. Her mind still replying the horror scene she saw from touching Quinn's body. She looked back at Quinn suspiciously, but left.

In the end, Alex had had enough of Quinn and decided it wasn't worth getting into an even more heated shouting match in the middle of the hotel lobby. Especially if she wasn't even sure of what she had seen. Was it recent? Was it a memory of Quinn's from long ago? Alex may have wanted to get away from Quinn  but she definitely wanted to get close to Andrew. She could feel that something wasn't right.

Quinn was now standing alone in the hotel lobby staring at the people looking back at her. She could feel the heat of their prodding eyes wondering what in the world was going on, but what she felt most was fear. Fear of what was really going to happen if Alex got too close to Andrew and that is when she knew. There was no way she could leave Collinsport.

"Excuse me." Quinn said at the front desk.

"Ma'am?" A kind woman who's name tag read Leigh.

"I want to check back in." Quinn stated.

The young Hotel desk clerk seemed surprised but began checking Quinn into the hotel again. Quinn's job wasn't over after all. She had to stay in town.

At the police station Detective Loomis McGovern carefully looked over paperwork he had ordered as a background check on Quinn Devereaux. It was all done in secret as his inquiry was purely on the basis that David had asked him to do it, not anything official with the police station.

The paper work went back over Quinn's time in law school, and who here parents were. It showed that she was an only child and that she had lived in the area for many years. In fact most of her family had come from in and around Maine over the years.

The paperwork went into great detail about the most benign of things, traffic tickets, parking tickets. The time Quinn went to court over a land dispute with a neighbor. Things that really didn't matter to Loomis and Loomis felt it wouldn't matter to David.

David was gunning for any kind of criminal activity that would explain how or why Quinn was able to get the DA to not charge Jeffery for Chris' death. But there was nothing that would even point to anything that connected Quinn with the DA.

"Find anything interesting?" A police office that was now sitting in Kat's old desk across from Loomis asked.

"Uhhhh..." Loomis said, unsure of how to answer as he hadn't told anyone he was looking into anyone's background. "Not sure yet."

"Need me to help? What are we looking for?" The office asked reaching for one of the many files but Loomis quickly grabbed his hand.

"Nah, its fine. Thanks. I can take care of it. I'm almost done anyway." Loomis answered.

The police office looked at Loomis with a strange look, and got up from the desk and went over to a coffee pot for more coffee. Loomis continued to look through the paper work.

"Ok let's see...." he said to himself, "mother----Jean Crenshaw-Devereaux...deceased. Father----Michael Devereaux----deceased. Maternal grandparents, Steven and Lilian Cranshaw, Paternal Grandparents Lawrence and Julia H. Devereaux...Julia H? Julia H...." Loomis thought. "Where have I heard that before? Julia H?"

Quinn's ties to a person in Collinsport was someone very familiar to town, someone who had been married and divorced many, many years ago, someone who buried herself into her work to cover-up her secret past. Someone who became so entrenched in another person's life her own past became just a ghost that occasionally haunted the very edgers of her mind but would always disappear with the birth of a new, more venomous drama that unfolded at her fingers tips.

Indeed, Quinn's grandmother, whom she had believed to have lived and died decades ago before her own birth was and is, the one and only, Julia Hoffman. Julia's secret past, was now ever present and living in the form of Quinn Devereaux.

At the Evans family cottage, Maggie carefully put together an easel. She, like her late father Sam, had taken up painting. It was a way for her to remove the tremendous amount of anxiety and post traumatic stress her life in Collinsport had handed her. It was a way to ease her psyche out of the trauma of all the years of terror and nightmares.

As Maggie painted away at a landscape she had imagined in her mind, a peaceful place where no one would ever bother her, there was a knock on the door. She carefully put down the paint brush and walked over to the lime green front door. She smirked to herself about how her peaceful landscape was taunting her now as the visitor kept knocking.

She looked through the peep-hole and saw someone she wasn't happy to see.

Serena Bellmoore.

Maggie opened the door and stood in front of the entrance like a statue made of iron. No one would pass her.

"Ms. Evans. Hi." Serena said softly, knowing Maggie still had massive reservations about her character.

"Serena." Maggie said in a cold greeting. "What can I do for you?"

"I came to see Sebastian." Serena answered, he was her boyfriend after all.

"He isn't here. David Collins called a few hours ago and said there was a job opening at the Fishing Fleet, he went down to see if perhaps it would be a job he liked." Maggie explained to Sebastian's girlfriend.

"Oh, he didn't tell me that." Serena answered in surprise. "So he's staying in town? He told me that we'd leave soon, back to Boston."

"I think he wants to stay here." Maggie said again in a cold tone.

"Look, Ms. Evans, I know that----" Serena began before begin interrupted by Maggie.

"Serena, listen, I don't know why you did what you did, and I certainly do not pretend understand it. I've been in many different terrible situations in my life, and trust me, I understand that everyone has a choice. You chose to do something very cruel, and it could have cost my own son  his life like it did Christopher's." Maggie explained.

"But it didn't, I made sure Sebastian was safe!" Serena exclaimed.

"At Christopher's expense!" Maggie shot back.

"I love your son, I really do. Jeffery had me in a very bad place, he had complete control over everything once false move and I could have lost it all. And yes, you're right I made the worst decision of my life and I feel horrible that Christopher's life was taken. Horrible. I don't know how I'll ever live with myself." Serena lamented.

"Neither do I." Maggie responded with her trade mark snark to Serena's irritation.

"What do you want me to do? What can I do to show you that I want to be with Sebastian and that I would never hurt him? The only way I could keep Sebastian safe from Jeffery was..." Serena paused.

"Again...allowing someone else to die." Maggie repeated, she was grateful her son Sebastian was safe but at the expense of someone else's life, a person who was a member of a family she cared for was just too horrible to comprehend.

"I love Sebastian. That's all I can say, and I'm willing to do anything to prove it to you because I know how much he loves you." Serena said, her voice breaking up.

Maggie paused. She looked at Serena and saw that there was some sincerity in her eyes. She did believe that Serena loved Sebastian, but understood that love like this wasn't always healthy. Maggie's own relationship with her ex husband Thatcher was proof enough of this. But Maggie relented.

"It's going to take time, and obviously, there are things I hope to see from you as the months go by. Nothing is earned without work Serena. Not love and especially not trust." Maggie explained.

"I understand. I hope to gain it all back from you some day." Serena answered.

Maggie gave her a heartfelt smile then told her she would tell Sebastian to call her as soon as he got home. Serena smiled back and adjusted her coat and scarf and began to walk to her car. As she did, her cell phone rang. Serena dug through her purse and pulled the phone out and looked at the screen hoping to see Sebastian's name on it, unfortunately, it read JEFFERY SHAW.

Serena was unsure what to do. She just told Maggie she was going to do everything she could to prove herself, to show that she was trust worthy. Having any connection to Jeffery  now would mean disaster for her, especially now that Maggie would be on her back day and night. Serena could tell that this was the type of woman Maggie was....strong, diligent and protective. Nothing would get passed her.

Serena took a deep breath and answered the call anyway.

"What do you want?" She said briskly.

"Miss Bellmoore, good evening. It's good to hear your voice." Jeffery said smugly.

"I asked what you wanted." Serena replied just as briskly as before.

"We're old friends Serena, there's no need for this kind of attitude, especially when you still owe me." Jeffery said.

"Owe you? I don't owe you anything! I did what you wanted. You have your son back." She replied as she sat in her car.

"He's back, you're right. But you still haven't repaid your balance in full. Something has happened, and I need your help to keep my son healthy." Jeffery mentioned.

"What?" Serena asked in total confusion.

"Get over to my hotel as soon as you can. If you're not here by tomorrow, I'll be sure to let the DA know that you too were involved with Christopher's kidnapping, and I'm sure they'd love to hear that mother Maggie and your new boyfriend covered for you too. My lawyer knows her way around a quick indictment. I'll take all three of you down. Do you understand me?" Jeffery said.

Serena was again caught up. Jeffery, now free from the clutches of the DA, would throw her under the bus for Christopher's kidnapping and Maggie and Sebastian under too for hiding the fact that she was involved. A felony.

Serena looked over at the Evans' family cottage door. She didn't know what to do, but was sure she couldn't allow Jeffery to take down both Maggie and Sebastian in anyway shape or form.

"Give me until tomorrow after noon...Ill help you." Serena said with frustrated tears in her eyes.

Jeffery hug up the phone and smiled evilly. He was about to get what he wanted and more.
