Series 12/Chapter 5: DEEPER INTO DÉJÀ VU

Barnabas retraces his steps & meets Elizabeth all over again

The mid-day sun couldn't be brighter. It stung the eyes and warmed the skin. It was as if everything it's rays touched were thawed into the breath of Spring. With every grace of sun light that ushered in a rebirth of Spring to the Maine village of Collinsport, a renaissance and new beginning was also afoot. And for India and Justin, their nerves were rightfully on edge from what they had witnessed just the night before. The real renaissance and rebirth; a new rejuvenated awakening of Barnabas Collins.

Together, Justin and India paced back and fourth in a worry filled dance in a back study at Collinwood that had carved wooden moldings of gargoyles staring down at them like devils from the doorway. The room smelled of tobacco, it was one of Roger's favorite smoking rooms even though Elizabeth had always asked him to stay in the real smoking room just off in the west wing of the house that was purposefully designated for his late night pipe puffs.

The Spring sun shined into the room in kaleidoscope patterns of leaves and branches from the large oak trees that sprawled the front lawn like giants holding out their arms. The windows that faced this this direction were large and were the first to welcome the morning sun, but when darkness fell at night they seemed to peer off into an abyss of blackness and shadows with no light from the outside.

India, still in Vicky's body walked over to a desk in the corner of the room that was almost invisible because it was made of  a wood that matched the wood panels on the walls. She turned on a lamp and allowed the orange light to shine on her face showing just how worried she was about what Barnabas had planned for that night---a plan that required her help in the most important of parts to his reconstruction of how he first met the family as to finally correct all the errors of the first time.

"I know you're scared but you have to be brave. This is it. This is what's going to get you back to your time." Just said, his face warn from a lack of sleep.

"I don't know how much longer I can be here. My family. My dad....." India paused realizing that her dad in 2019 was also her dad in 1966, just 50 years younger. "It's all just ...its a mess." She finished.

"Do you trust Barnabas? Do you think he'll do what he said he would? I don't know how any of this works....I...I just don't know what to think." Justin said, his brain still unable to comprehend exactly what he saw as Barnabas came out of his coffin the night before.

"I think I have to trust him. What choice do I have? He has me here like a prisoner of time, if I don't trust him and let him do what he needs to do I'll never get back to my time." India said staring at herself in another picture frame that reflected Vicky's face back to her.

"But what if it's all a trick? What if he's pulling us into a trap, I mean my god, he's.....he's ...." Justin couldn't bring himself to say the word, the word that meant a person of the undead. A person who needed the blood of others to live themselves, a creature of immortal and thirsts for blood.

"Stop. Just stop." India said quickly standing up to quell Justin. "I have to do what he says or else I'll be stuck here. I can't. I can't stay here." She said.

Justin knew she had to go back, even if it meant that she'd be leaving him. Even if it meant whatever friendship, or more, would end. It was the right thing to do no matter how many misgivings they had about Barnabas.

"How did he know to go to that other house, the one that's all rundown? How did he know that?" Justin wondered about the place where Barnabas was currently hiding, deep below the Old House floors awaiting the night to reveal himself --again--to the current Collins family of 1966.

"I don’t really know much about him other than a few myths. I mean no one really had time to explain to me who he was—other that he was once married to Julia Hoffman and that my father later marries Julia and Barnabas’ adopter daughter. Everyone in 2019 seems to recear him but also fear him. They love him but they hate him. My uncle Gabriel  sort of warned me... just before all this happened he...” India explained pausing as she remembered how fearful her maternal uncle Gabriel was when he finally introduced India to her Collins side.

“He what?” Justin wondered.

“He knew. He must of known all about this ... Barnabas. And what he was, and where he came from. He was scared for me. He was worried that I’d somehow ...fall into danger. He must have.” India concluded with a slight sadness in her voice understanding Gabriel was protecting her from the Collins family all her life.

"You know we could do something else." Justin remembered suddenly as he turned to a small globe standing next to the desk an spun it.

"What do you mean?" She wondered.

"You mentioned Julia Hoffman when we met.  If we don't trust Barnabas and how we he's handling all of this, we could always try Julia again. That is if you though she is the person who  could get you back too. Bangor is still an option, and that’s where Julia is.." Justin continued.

"Dr. Hoffman." India said in a whisper.

"Maybe she'll know what to do now that Barnabas is free. If she thinks we can trust him, then maybe we can and we won't have to worry so much." Justin said.

India began to mull it over. She knew that Julia and Barnabas had a special relationship, and eventually would marry, but they needed to find her before he did and make sure she could actually help---Barnabas was a live-wire. Could he be trusted? No one knew. Would he really do what he promised and send India home as soon as he made all his wrongs right? Another mystery.

"Ok. We'll go find her. As soon as I help Barnabas tonight when he comes to main house to meet the family you and I will get to Bangor and find Julia. I feel like I could trust her more with all of this. She'd understand. She'd be key to it all." India said agreeing.

"I'll head home and shower and change. Maybe nap even." Justin said

"You should rest." India said as she stood up and walked over to him from around the desk and put her hands on his arm.

Justin looked over at Vicky's face, he knew deep inside was India, the young woman he met over a week ago and almost hit with his car. He knew he was looking at a face that wasn't her's. He knew deep in his heart that his feeling were starting to grow and they were for India and Vicky's face was not changing that.

Justin smirked and slightly tilted his head and leaned down to kiss India on Victoria's lips but India pulled away.

"I'm sorry! I'm Sorry! Did I read that wrong??" Justin worried as India stepped back.

"No, I just.....I'm sorry. I just feel like, I'm not myself." India said looking down at the body she was in.

"But I see you. I see India. I really do." Justin replied.

India smiled. She could tell he was someone she could trust, right off the bat there was something warming and safe about him. She really wanted to kiss him but the situation was just too hazardous for them to start anything. Her time in Collinsport, 1966, would hopefully come to an end and where India planned on going Justin could not follow.

"Justin, I like you. A lot. But you know we ...we just can't." India said.

Justin smiled softly, he knew she was right. It wasn't meant to be that they even knew each other. They shouldn't even be in the same world, the same time. It was all a blur of reality and fantasy and confusion because of Barnabas' attempt at correcting all the hurt he had caused in his first awakening.

"I should go." Justin said sounding disappointed.

"Justin...." India said as Justin turned back around seeing India in the bright spring sunlight from the large windows. "I'm sorry." She said in a whisper.

"Forget about it, huh? It is what it is I guess." Justin said. "I'll be back later tonight so that we can get to Hoffman." Justin continued as he smiled sweetly then stammered off to sleep some of the previous night away leaving India feeling guilty, sad and alone in the bright study of the West wing.

In the tea room at the Collinsport Inn, Arabella sat with her legs crossed in a finely stitched Chanel dress, her neck wrapped in 3 strands of perfectly cultured strands of white pearls. She sipped her tea and watched as the on-lookers from town stared at her new, fresh face. Once in a while, she'd wink at a woman's husband who stared too long.

Her approach to get what she felt she deserved from the Collins family for what she saw was terrible treatment of her missing brother Paul seemed to be working. Carolyn had been manipulated to get rid of her rival for her mother's affections thus keeping Arabella's hands clean of any blood that would be spilled and Elizabeth was just days away from writing her a million dollar check to keep her silence over what she knew. Her plan worked out better than she had ever dreamed, all thanks to Beau and his expert detective work.

"Ma'am, there's a phone call." One of the hotel clerks said handing Arabella a white phone with a very long cord.

"For me?" She wondered.

"Its Miss Stoddard." The clerk said, knowing exactly who Carolyn Stoddard was.

Arabella quickly grabbed the phone and removed one of her pearl earrings for a better listening on the phone.

"Carolyn?" Arabella asked as soon as the clerk walked off.

"Aunt Bella, hi, I'm glad you're still there. I needed to talk to you." Carolyn said, her call coming from a payphone in town and her voice loud and clear, attempting to talk over passing cars.

"Where are you?" Arabella wondered hearing the background.

"I needed a safe line to talk to you on, I'm at a payphone in town." Carolyn confirmed.

"Honey, why didn't you just come to the hotel?"

"I didn't want anyone to hear the full conversation, at least this way if someone overhears they only hear one side." Carolyn replied cleverly to Arabella's surprise.

"Has something happened?"

"Well, yes and no. Last night Beau Cielvert and I were talking and a few things came up, nothing for you to be worried about but I think I have a way to handle you know who and you know what." Carolyn said cryptically.

"You Talked to Beau, I see." Arabella answered skeptical Carolyn knew what she was doing. "And what exactly did you and Beau talk about? Nothing that would put our plan off I hope." Arabella answered passive aggressively.

"No, no. Not at all. I didn't tell him anything that would interrupt our plan." Carolyn said as she tried to keep her voice down so that man waiting his turn at the phone booth didn't hear her. "But he has this sister that I knew, well that I know. She and I used to be friends and we had a falling out but I think I can get her to help us with ...you know. She's....well I can get some help from her and she wouldn't even know she was helping. Does that make sense?" Carolyn asked her conniving Aunt.

Arabella tried to add two and two together as Carolyn was being slightly covert with what she was saying but it was a puzzle that only had  few pieces. It was easy to make sense of it, and Arabella was fine with Carolyn doing most of the dirty work to off Vicky.

"Honey whatever you think is best for the situation, and as long as you think you can handle it, I'm all for it. You do what you want just keep me in the loop as best you can. Does that sound alright?" Arabella answered.

"So you're ok with me speaking with Noelle? I won't tell her of course what I need help with, I'll be as discrete and as vague as possible. I just want it to be done and I want it over with." Carolyn asked, despite her initial misgivings and second thoughts about the whole idea of killing Vicky to secure her place as the only heiress of her mother's fortune.

This was music to Arabella's ears. Things were progressing perfectly. Soon she'd have her money and she'd be on the next flight out of the country leaving the Collins family, hopefully, in ruins as the fall out over Vicky's murder would fall in the hands of Carolyn thus destroying Elizabeth in the process.

"That sounds perfect." Arabella said with a purr in her voice.

The two Stoddard women hung up their ends of the line. Arabella satisfied with her trap to leave the family in tatters for their treatment of her brother, and Carolyn feeling like she was really helping her cause. The lies and manipulation by her Aunt Arabella fully entrenched in her brain. It was a perfect storm of destruction, a train headed for off a cliff.

Death was near.

****

As the sun set and the crows began to swirl in large flocks around the large oak tress surrounding Collinwood awaiting the dark sky, many people inside the house were about to put on a show, a show of lies and deception, a show of hidden secrets that would ultimately lead to final exposure.

Elizabeth, her brother Roger and an unwelcome guest who crashed an earlier dinner sat in the drawing room sipping on after dinner desert wine. Their guest for that evening had come in from the Inn in town, Arabella Stoddard, her bewitching green eyes constantly shifting to Elizabeth to see if the Collins matriarch would crack under her persistent pressure.

The truth of Victoria Winter's connection to the family burned on Arbella's tongue and she wanted to scream it from the mountain tops to expose Liz and her betrayal, but money made everything work in her favor. Arabella would rather have a million dollar check in her name then real satisfactory revenge for her brother Paul's, and for Elizabeth's, suffering one more night with Arabella, who knew her presence was just one more heavy pill for Elizabeth to swallow and pretend everything was normal.

Things were never normal.

All of this, was to keep her secret. Keep the lie safe. Keep everyone away from the truth. Keep Elizabeth's world as intact as it was, and keep Victoria in the dark about her past. That was paramount in the matriarch's mind, the treat of the exposure of her secret child was a death knell that Liz did not want to hear.

As the three sat, in awkward small talk sipping their after dinner drinks, another part of the puzzle was about to reveal itself. India, inside Vicky's body came into the room. Her face a tapestry of excitement, nerves and worry---it was just one more person playing a role.

"Vicky, good evening!" Roger said first. "Can I pour you a drink?" He added as Arabella looked on, this being one of the first times she saw Vicky in the flesh.

Elizabeth noticed Arabella's gaze and began to feel uncomfortable, her real life secret standing literally between the two Stoddard women.

"No, thank you Roger. Actually I'm here with a very big surprise. You'll never guess who I ran into down in the village. Never in your wildest dreams." India said in Vicky's soft bubbly voice as she began to make up a story about how she ran into Barnabas by chance, in a random "bumping into" in town.

The other's looked confused, the sensation of surprise and jubilation  was a foreign feeling to them.   As India continued to explain how she met the mysterious  man, they all looked towards the entrance to the drawing room and in walked a living price of art. The supposed second Barnabas Collins. His hair slicked to the side, his eyes dark and  mysterious, his lips a quiver and a lively rose pink freshly touched by the winter-like wind from the outdoors.

"Mrs. Stoddard, this is Barna---" India began before being interrupted by Liz’s shocked gasp.

"Barnabas Collins!! It can't be! It's impossible!" The matriarch said, stunned by his resemblance to the painting in her foyer.

"But how????!" Roger replied in the same amount of shock.

"The second Barnabas Collins the second.." Barnabas confirmed with a very friendly grin. "It's a pleasure to meet you all, and by the look on your faces I can see that you do recognize me. Or shall I say, him." He too said, referring to the portrait in the foyer he was passing off as his great-grandfather.

"But, how is this  possible? The likeness, its impeccable."  Elizabeth asked.

"I know, it does seem jarring when you get a good look at the two of us." Barnabas said with a wicked smirk. "The Collins blood is very strong as you can see."

"I don't understand—what the hell is going on?" Arabella asked as she stood up to meet the new stranger in the room.

Barnabas turned to the red-headed Arabella and felt a tingle go down his spine. Her energy was like jolt of electricity that turned his insides into sparks. He could feel her cruelty, it was the same feeling he got when he was around Angelique Bouchard, the witch who cast him into darkness.

Barnabas slowly walked over to the new face in house, the first time he came to Collinsport, she was not there. This was a different faction of his existence, but her aura of evil warned him: she needed to be watched.

"Please let me explain." Barnabas said to Arabella first, then turned back to the others. "I've come all the way from England in hopes to meet my American cousins, distant cousins. I perhaps should have called sooner or made myself known in a different way, for the intrusion and obvious shock I apologize.

Everyone froze for a moment staring at the man they couldn’t believe real. Then Elizabeth, ever the proud and astute hostess broke the awkward silence.

"Oh, please It's fine, we're just a bit surprised to see how much you look like, well, he must be your great-grandfather?." Elizabeth said trying to settle all their nerves.

"Thank you, Elizabeth....cousin Elizabeth. And yes, he was my great-grandfather.”  Barnabas said in a charming tone smirking his toothy white grin winning over the glowing Elizabeth.

"How did you know where to find us?" Roger asked, his lips stained with brandy.

"Collinwood is all I’ve ever heard about as a child. The family. The family tree. This place. This land. It's like I .....its like I've always been here. It's like I never set foot in England." Barnabas explained.

"Hmm." Arabella muttered to herself, unsure of she believed him or not.

"I just had to see you all as soon as I got to town. Miss Winters and I had a chance meeting in the village and as soon as I discovered her connection to the family up on Widow's Hill I thought what a wonderful twist of fate. It was truly meant for me to come tonight. " Barnabas explained, his cover seeming to convince the family.

"A Collins in England? I had no idea we still had distant relatives across the pond. This is remarkable!" Roger added still in a boozy voice.

"Indeed!" Elizabeth exclaimed, her eager eyes taking in every inch of her handsome English cousin.
"Well this is no way to welcome a Collins; with confused reactions and down right slack-jawed faces now is it?" she added shaking her head of all her own questions. "Welcome to Collinwood!!" She gleefully added.

Barnabas smiled at Liz and playfully winked at the gawking Arabella--an attempt to win her over. It was all so familiar to him. The game. The lie. The push to get in good with the family. He had heard this before from her. He had seen it all before, of course in different circumstances, in different ways, in a different bend of time. It was all a sort of mirror image of  his first time meeting Elizabeth, but things were different in just the slightest of ways, he knew of course India's bodily presence being the reason for the changes to the first reality. Mainly Arabella's presence.

Barnabas leaned down and kissed the back of Elizabeth's well manicured hand. He looked up at her and their eyes met. Friendly. Kind.

"Odd..." She said suddenly with as a strange feeling suddenly came over her.

India panicked at Liz's sudden pause.

"What .....what is it?” India asked unsure of what was coming next, perhaps their secret exposed.

"I feel like I've done this before. Like I've talked to you before Barnabas. A Deja Vu....But how? We didn't even know you existed or that you were coming?" Liz said.

"Well you're very familiar with my face of course. It's hung in your foyer for years. That is to say, my great-grandfather's face." Barnabas said covering.

"But, how is it we never heard of you or the rest of the Collins family in England? Why is this the first time?" Roger asked as Arabella's eyes began to scan Barnabas for a wedding ring; to Arabella another Collins man, single, would be her crown jewel of husbands.

"That is a very good question. Distant relatives often don't have the ability to know each other in the flesh especially when time begins to chip away at the generations. You see, I am the last Collins alive in England---of our family." Barnabas said. "My entire mission was to come back---here---to reconnect with my roots. Right some wrongs. Fix the odds and ends."

"And...your wife?" Arabella asked with a shark’s eye and hunger.

Barnabas turned to her again, he had no idea how to respond to her, he already could feel she was not to be trusted.

"You have to excuse my sister-in-law Barnabas, she's visiting from San Francisco and gets quite attached to the idea of...." Roger stopped himself before anything off color came out of his mouth in front of his employee Victoria. "Never mind, besides she was just leaving.”

"I was?" Arabella answered confused.

"Yes, I'll take you back to your hotel. Barnabas, please make yourself at home. Arabella, I'll get your coat." Roger said, seeing that Arabella already wanted to sink her hooks into Barnabas and whatever money he my possessed.

"Mr. Collins, Mr. Barnabas Collins, it was ...a pleasure to meet you." Arabella said extending her hand to the new family member as India looked on with hands trebling for Arabella's safety.

Barnabas grabbed Arabella's hand. He could feel her skin: warm and soft like the perfect kiss. He could feel every cell in her body racing around in the crimson rivers of her blood. He kissed her hand and it was as if something electric touched his lips. She winked at him and sauntered over to Roger who was impatiently trying to get rid of her for Barnabas's sake---for everyone's sake.

"Alright, lets go." Roger snapped.

"I should check on David." India said too as she quickly left the room to allow Barnabas the full stage as he attempted the first round of fixing the wrongs he had done the first time in 1966.

"I really did not mean to intrude and break up your get-together. Had I known I would have waited for tomorrow to come see you all." Barnabas said to Elizabeth who quickly too her place back on the sofa.

"No, actually I'm glad someone came and took that horrible woman out of here. Mr. Collins, I--" Elizabeth began before Barnabas interrupted.

"Barnabas, please."

"Barnabas, yes" Liz said smiling, "I am elated to see your face. To see how well the Collins blood line has kept up with our final English ancestor. I truly am, but as you can imagine, the household is a bit upset and I would hate for you to get the wrong impression of us so soon." Elizabeth explained.

"Of course I understand. I did intrude." Barnabas answered.

"No, no, no, not in the way you think. Really, it is a great pleasure to have you." Liz said, as Barnabas could feel she had more to say.

"Are you alright Elizabeth?" He asked.

"It's just.... I have this strange feeling that  I can tell you everything..., but I really shouldn't." Elizabeth said..

Barnabas sat down across from Elizabeth, he knew that because this was his second coming to this time fragment, that there was already a built in closeness to Elizabeth--she knew it too--although she could not imagine why. Elizabeth chalked it up to them being related but the truth was they had years and years of being close, just in a different time fragment. Elizabeth had no idea she was repeating her own life. But she was.

He looked into Liz's eyes, and it was as if worlds opened up, he grabbed her hand and felt an energy flow from her to him, like a fire burning deep within their touching skin. And with Barnabas' electric mystical touch, Elizabeth opened up about everything that had her home-life so "upset" as she put it: how Arabella was blackmailing her, how she needed to give her money to keep a secret and soon leave town with it. How she was waiting for the company check to arrive before giving it to Arabella so that she could leave. How she was risking so much keeping this secret, that had to be kept to save her from ruin and embarrassment and scandal all over town. Elizabeth poured her heart out to Barnabas like she had never done before, not in any time period, not in any time fragment. It was an Elizabeth full of trust, and concern and hope that she could be rid of the cancer that was Arabella on her life. Elizabeth believed that she could not allow the secret about Victoria to be out, she could not allow it, and Arabella was a ticking time bomb. Anything that stopped her from getting her money would, in Elizabeth's words "destroy me completely."

"So you see why I had to suffer her for this dinner tonight. Roger doesn't know anything. I can never tell him. I just have to continue to play the part: swallow my pride and let Arabella run around Collinsport until I get her the money and then hopefully be rid of her forever. I'm so embarrased to have to tell you all this on our first meeting." Liz said.

"Not at all Elizabeth, not at all. We're family after all. It pleases me to see that you trust me so." Barnabas explained.

"And so quickly!" Liz laughed. "Thank you...thank you for listening. I wouldn't have been able to tell anyone else and getting all of that off my chest ...well it made me feel better." She added.

"I'm sorry this has happened to you." Barnabas said as his truth serum touch wore off an his distant cousin and Liz looked at the clock seeing that so much of the evening had passed.

"My goodness I can't believe I've burdened you with all this family drama all this time. I can assure you I wouldn't have said anything if I didn't need to talk it out with someone. Where are you staying Barnabas? Not in town I hope, we have so much room here." Liz asked sweetly.

"Well, actually if you wouldn't mind, I would prefer more independent quarters."

"Oh...so you are at the Inn in town?" Elizabeth responded disappointingly.

"Well, no, not exactly, you see cousin, I grew up with stories upon stories of the old house. I'd like to stay there. I'd certainly be out of your way and yet we'd be close enough to see each other as much as possible. I'd love to learn more about my New England family. It would mean the world to me if you'd allow me to stay there." Barnabas said, to Elizabeth's shock.

"The old house??? But it's in such disrepair!! I couldn't allow that!" She replied not knowing Barnabas had already set himself up in the basement of the old house with Justin and India's help the night before.

"Trust me Cousin Elizabeth, I am very resourceful and have all the intentions to make that place as good as new, not only for me but for this family and our history. Refurbishing the old house to its former glory would be a dream come true." Barnabas said.

Elizabeth took a pause to think. She was unsure how much this "Barnabas II" actually knew about the family. The stories he may have heard worried her. To Elizabeth, the dark side of the family, perhaps may be something this Barnabas needn't know...even though he knew it all too well.

"What exactly did you learn about our family Barnabas? Did you hear many stories about us?" Elizabeth asked, but strangely felt like she already knew the answer.

"Oh Endless stories." Barnabas and Elizabeth said together at the exact same time, shocking Elizabeth.

"Barnabas, why did I know you were going to say that? Why is it that I'm feeling like I've had this conversation before. Like I've been in this room...with you...talking as we are now? That can't be possible can it?" Elizabeth asked, unsure of what was really happening.

"It could not." Barnabas said, his voice sounding cold with worry that Elizabeth may be catching on to what was happening. "This has never happened Elizabeth. It has never ever happened." Barnabas said again, his voice filling her brain and taking hold of her thoughts for a split second.

Elizabeth felt at ease again, her strange feeling that she was oddly repeating a portion of her life began to dissipate. It was a control function Barnabas was good at. It was a tact he was able to use often that many many times before had saved his life. Mind control.

"You must think me foolish, please for give me Barnabas." Elizabeth said as Barnabas' control lifted from her brain. "Perhaps its the Deja Vu again but I.....I feel so rather fond of you in such a short amount of time that it feels like you've come in like a breath of a fresh air, like an old friend I haven't seen in ages.." Elizabeth said shyly.

Barnabas looked at his cousin and could feel her still searching for answers in her own mind but that sensation slowly faded away as Elizabeth gave in to the feeling that it was all just a mind game of her own design.

"We're family. The Collins blood is thick with generational connection after connection. You can feel it, can't you? It's just our way. It's just our family ties. I feel it too." Barnabas replied comforting her further.

Liz smiled, she felt a strange feeling of dread mixed with safety. It frightened her but yet she felt comfortable with her new cousin.

"Ok, I've thought it over and I'd be fine with you staying in the Old house, under one condition, you come here as often as you'd like. Do not be a stranger." She giggled. "But please if you want for anything let me know, like I said the old house needs a lot, and money is no object for your comfort there. I really want to make sure your stay with is us a good one. For however long that is." Liz said.

"Yes.....for however long." Barnabas answered.

It was clear to him now that there was yet another obstacle to take care of in his second coming. He had not foreseen Arabella's arrival and her meddling and blackmail. Arabella's hold on Elizabeth could alter the future, for she had not come to Collinsport on Barnabas’s original foray into the 1960’s. He knew she had to be dealt with. He knew she had to be neutralized before her plots became even more convoluted and tangled. If he allowed her to continue to roam the streets of Collinsport the way she was, looting the family of a million dollars, keeping Elizabeth on a tight leash, there was no way he could finally fix the wrongs he had done to this generation of Collins family members freely.

And he was thirsty and Arabella might just provide for the perfect nightcap.

India, in Vicky's body and Justin arrive at Windcliff

In an awaiting car just outside the iron gates of the Collinwood estate, Justin Patterson puffed a large white cloud of smoke out his driver-side window. The red 1962 Buick's passenger side flung open and India do Arco jumped in; still trapped in Victoria Winter's body.

"We really gotta stop meeting like this." Justin joked to Vicky's eye roll.

"Barnabas has his side handled. He's schmoozing with the family, the coast is clear." India replied as she buckled in.

"Was that safe? Leaving that whole family with a vampire who hasn't had a drop of blood in....who knows how long?" Justin worried as the car drove off to Bangor to find Julia Hoffman.

"Before we came in, Barnabas handled his business. He....." India gulped "found a few woodland animals and ....well, you can guess the rest."  She explained.

"Jesus!" Justin gasped. "Are you sure can trust him? I feel like a broken record, like I keep asking you the same questions but I don't know if we can! I don't know what makes sense anymore. Can we trust him?" He again emphasized.

"I don't have a choice Justin! It's either stay in this body in this time forever or allow Barnabas to carry out his plan note for note. Which is why, I guess it's better for us to bring in Julia. If Barnabas fails, and getting what he wants out of all this, then she's the only one that can help. I have to believe that!" India said.

"You're right now to put all your eggs in Barnabas' basket. Doing this, getting Julia involved too is a safety net India. I can feel it. I really can." Justin said reassuring her.

As their conversation progressed time seemed to escape them. The 45 minute south-east to Bangor flew by, and by almost midnight they arrived on Saynes Street, the street of Windcliff Sanitarium. It was a foggy, wooded street with almost no street lamps. The darkness from the margins of the road almost seemed to seep in like black water, slowly, deeply and mysteriously.

It didn't take long. Windlciff was in the distance. They could see all the lights on in what looked like a giant ranch-style house with three floors and white walls and 2 green-shutters that hugged each of the windows. Justin and India slowly made their nervous walk up the slick path to the front of the sanitarium hoping everything would work out. It had to. Julia had to help.

As they walked into the lobby, they could see a man at the front desk signing paperwork facing a nurse who seemed to be consoling him. It was almost midnight. Justin and India felt odd that someone was being admitted so late, but at the same time knew that if someone was being admitted that meant an attending doctor would have to be available--the only one at Windcliff was Julia Hoffman.

"She's got to be here." India whispered.

"Now doll, you'll have to remember that this is the best for you...and for your wife. It's going to be fine. You'll see!" A nurse said to the man who suddenly moved and revealed a small boy of about 5 years old huddled between his father's legs.

Justin's eyes watered at this sight. A boy, feeling the sadness of his father and confusion for his missing mother. At Windcliff, a sanitarium. It was all too familiar. It was all too real. Something similar had happened to him when he was young. His father too had to bring his mother to a sanitarium, his father too had to be the only parent while his mother was locked away at a place for the mad, the crazy, the mentally unstable.

The flash back gave Justin second thoughts.

"We have to go, this isn't right." Justin said as India grabbed his hand and squeezed tightly. She had no idea of his past but instinctively she knew he needed to feel secure. Somehow.

"Shhh." India comforted.

"Can I help you?" The nurse said as the man and his son passed Justin and India. The boy and Justin make eye contact as they walked passed.

"We need to see Dr. Hoffman. It's an emergency." India said.

"Sorry doll, we're only allowing light night admittance, you won't be able to see the doctor or any of the attending doctor's until 9am tomorrow morning." The nurse rattled off.

"I said it was an emergency. Please. I have to see her." India pushed.

"Miss, I don't like to repeat myself, but I will, One. More. Time." The nurse said forcefully as she stood up from her chair revealing a hefty frame. "Come back at 9am." She repeated.

"I don't think you understand. This is a matter of life and death and..." Justin began before the nurse continued to rebuff their request.

It caused a whole argument when finally, from out of a side door marked STAFF, Dr. Julia Hoffman appeared, seemingly appalled by all the noise.

"What is this all about?" Julia said dropped her clip-board on the nurse's desk.

India was instantly frozen in shock. Julia remarkably looked the same, albeit slightly bit younger but it was her. It was the exact woman she had met in the Collins family's foyer in 2019. The doctor that told her if she needed help, to find her. Well, India found her.

"Dr. Hoffman, I'm so glad I've found you. Please you have to help me. I've been trapped here. It'll sound insane when I explain but you have to believe me. I'm from ...." India paused, she couldn't believe what she was going to say next to a doctor of psychology in a mental hospital. "I'm from another time." She heard herself say sounding ridiculous.

"Another time?" Julia repeated with a strange look on her face.

"I know how that sounds, I know that it must bring up red flags all over me, but I need you to trust that I know you, and that I'm from the year 2019."

"Ok....let's be calm about this, tell me again how we know each other."

"It's a very long story." Justin interjected.

"Is that so?" Julia said taking out a blank pad to write down what she was hearing.

"I know it sounds insane, but it's the truth...and there's more. Much more." India continued.

"We don't use that word here Miss...?" Julia replied allowing for India to say her name.

"India...do Arco."

"Miss do Arco, we don't use the word Insane,  or crazy, or mad...none of those words. Nothing is out of the ordinary. Everything here at Windcliff is ordinary. Normal. Real. I try and make sure tha tmy patients believe and trust where I come from when I speak to them and when we discuss the world that they live in. Do you understand me?" Julia asked as India shook  her head yes. "

And who are you?" Julia then asked turning to Justin.

"Justin Patterson doctor., India's friend. And I can vouch for her. I met her, just a few weeks ago and she didn't look like this. She was herself. She was in her own body and form and then something happened to her and she turned into this person. You see this body isn't hers." Justin explained also feeling like the story was completely bizarre to tell to a doctor in a mental hospital.

"And Barnabas has come back. He's come back! Barnabas Collins in Collinsport." India said as Julia looked at her with weary eyes.

"Barnabas?" She said, although the name was unfamiliar, it rang in her ear as if she had heard it just the other day.

"YES! Your husband. Well, he isn't your husband until...well later in your life, but that's the thing, he has me trapped in this time so that I can help him right the wrongs of his life. He's....he come back from the dead!" India said.

Julia's brow lifted. She was unsure of what was happening with the two young people in front of her. Was one having a mental break-down, were they both having a mental break-down? The story they were weaving was almost out of science fiction, but Julia could tell the two new faces at Windcliff really believed what they were saying which made her job as Windcliff's attending doctor that much more important. It was her job to guide the visitation with the mentally infirm. Were they?

Julia, of course, not knowing it was all true and that her own life had just changed in a matter of minutes now that she too was involved.

"Are you both feeling overwhelmed? Frightened? Feeling like there's chaos all around you? Do you feel in distress?" Julia asked ticking away boxes on her writing pad and motioning to something with her hand that was behind India and Justin.

India and Justin looked at each other strangely. They knew their story was far-fetched but were hoping Julia would believe them and that she would help.

As the two stood there, two big men in white dressing scrubs with wheel chairs came in from behind.

Both men then pulled syringes out of pouches they had on belts around their waists.

"Wait, what is this? What are you doing?!" Justin said starting move away towards the front door pulling India along with him.

The giant men lunged for Justin and India and grabbed them hold them tightly. There was a scuffle, a fight. India fell to the ground, one of the men in white on top of her. She began to scream and Justin began to fight harder to get away from his opponent and get to India, to save India. To save them both.

Justin punched his man in white in the jaw who then turned over on his back writhing in pain As Justin attempted to get up he saw with  his own eyes a needle go into India's neck, then her screaming stopped. Justin gasped and froze as he watched one of the men pick up India who was out cold.

And in a split second a the second needle went into Justin's neck. Julia Hoffman standing right behind him injecting him with the same medicine India was injected with rending him motionless---asleep.

"Take them both back to Psychiatric room 210. Make sure they're on lock down. These two are very interesting." Julia said as the big men in white carried Justin and India to the wheel chairs asleep then rolled them off to the back of Windcliff.

"Also, see if you can find out what this Barnabas Collins of Collinsport business is all about." Julia added with her eyes firmly on the two wheel chairs getting smaller and smaller down the brightly lit hallway.

"Yes Doctor." the large frame nurse eagerly.

Julia felt something in the pit of her stomach. That name. That place. It was like it was meant for her to hear it on this night, only India had no idea she was a year early by introducing Julia to the Collins family. Adding Julia Hoffman to the mix before she was supposed to be, before she had ever even entertained the knowledge of the Collins family could be detrimental. .

Julia was NOT apart of Barnabas' plan. Arabella was NOT apart of Barnabas’ plan.

Now, both women were in the way of Barnabas’ plan of atonement and Barnabas did not like to be walled in, not in the slightest.

Series 12/Chapter 4: THE OPEN MOUTH OF A GRAVE

India (in Vicky's body) and Justin at the Collins Mausoleum

A late morning chill flowed through the great house atop Widow's Hill. It was like the icy breath of death slowly making it's way around every corner of the mansion. This cold filled every room, it touched every wall, and it caressed every hanging portrait of past family members with eyes that watch the current inhabitants of 1966 Collinwood like gate keepers of secrets long forgotten.

This chill, that caused the hair to stand up on the back of the neck, was not just an environmental anomaly but a sign from the other side. It was warning, and the one that felt this cold the most, was Elizabeth Collins-Stoddard, who stood alone in back private library, a small and cozy room, staring out of the dark draped window that looked out on to a gloomy grassy courtyard.

Elizabeth was worried. She knew that Arabella was probably in town to stick her nose into her private business and that truths about various secrets in her life could be revealed. These were secrets that could destroy so much of her, so much that she had worked so hard to keep hidden. She had to figure out a way to handle Arabella's meddling, something had to do be done before it was too late.

"Penny for your thoughts. Or perhaps 30,000 pennies." Arabella said as she arrogantly walked into Elizabeth's private library dressed to the nines.

"What?" Elizabeth replied with eyes as cold as the house itself.

"Oh nothing, just remarking on the amount you spend on Victoria Winters. 30,000 pennies equals out to $300, that's Vicky's wage a week isn't it?"

"Arabella what are you doing here and what business is it of yours what I pay David's governess?" Elizabeth shot back.

"You said I was welcome, so, I’m here. Make me welcome.” Arabella answered arrogantly as she cased the library running her finger across the bookshelf checking for dust.

Elizabeth snarled. This woman, her late husband’s Younger sister was clearly teasing her. It was as if Elizabeth  was a caged tiger pacing and pacing.

“I still don’t know how any of my affairs are your business Arabella.” Elizabeth said trying to swallow her obvious aggravation.

“What business is it of mine what you pay your bastard daughter, you mean? Well it's very much my business when it affects my niece Carolyn." Arabella replied to a suddenly  shaken Elizabeth.

"....what?” Elizabeth said with a crack and shock in her voice. “What did you just say to me?”

"Which part didn’t you hear dear? The part about Carolyn or your bastard daughter? Really Elizabeth, I think we're well passed the pretending to not understand stage of what I'm about to divulge to you. I know who Vicky is, I know you know who she is too and I know that you've been paying her to be here because after all, she's your child. There are a lot of things I can do with that information, and you know it." Arabella said.

Within the time it took for Arabella to speak, Elizabeth had already regrouped herself from the shock of the revelation, this was Elizabeth's super power. With every shocking bit of news, it only took her the blink of her heavily lashed eyes to regroup and come back with a counter attack. It was in her Collins blood to fight back, it was in her Collins blood to never let go without a fight, and now. Elizabeth knew now she could show no fear. Liz may have been a mess since her husband left town, abandoning her and her baby daughter years before, but she was no longer a person to confront and believe that it would be an easy win.

Elizabeth was a Collins; she could weather any wind from any storm---and survive.

"So, is that what you've been doing with your time here? Looking into my background to find out what you could to use against me? Is that really what you call creating a relationship with your niece?" Elizabeth asked as she sat down on leathery sofa's.

"I came here because you wont' say a word about where my brother Paul went. You won't tell a soul what made him leave and you won't work with anyone on trying to find him. Discovering your bastard child only adds fuel to my fire. Tell me the truth: Paul discovered you had a baby before he married you and left you, didn't he? It's because of Victoria that my brother is gone. Why? Why would he leave and not tell us?" Arabella demanded.

"You're a fool." Elizabeth replied.

Arabella grinned, she could see Elizabeth wasn't really going to give up all the family secrets right then and there. But she had another option for Liz, something that would up the ante.

"I have in my hands something that will change your life forever. This is proof of that  you've been lying about who your new governess is. You've been lying all this time, and now I can see why Paul left you, NOW I can see how treacherous you are Elizabeth." Arabella scolded, her eyes staring deep into Elizabeth's eyes.

Elizabeth lifted an eye brow and turned away from Arabella, holding her breath.

"What exactly are you talking about?" The Collins family matriarch wondered.

"Vicky." Arabella replied with one word.

"Arabella.....I..." Elizabeth said, turning around to Arabella who's arm was now extending with the damning paperwork in her hand.

"Victoria is your child, this is all the proof I need to show Carolyn that you have been hiding not only the truth about her father's disappearance but that she has a half sister, a half sister that you so cleverly disguised as David's governess. All I need do is show this to Carolyn and you'll lose her forever. Hell, you might even lose Victoria. What kind of mother would you be to her anyway, she'd see right through you. She'd learn that she was your daughter and instead of you welcoming her with open arms, you bloody hired her as the help!" Arabella scoffed, neglecting to tell Elizabeth that she already told Carolyn.

"Do you really think they'd believe you? Who are you but some black widow with a penchant for marrying rich old men on the verge of death to make a buck!" Elizabeth shot back uncharacteristically bring up gossip about Arabella's three dead husbands and the circumstances surrounding each death.

Arabella smiled again like the cat that ate the cannery but did not take Liz's bait. She only sat down next to her sister-in-law and put the envelope carrying Victoria's paperwork on Liz's lap.

"I wouldn't test me, Liz. Not when I hold all the cards." Arabella replied and pushed the paper work over to Liz's hand.

Elizabeth rolled her eyes and grabbed the envelope and pulled out the forms. It was all true, Arabella did indeed have all the forms and the truth in her hands. This seemed like a death sentence. Something of a horrible nightmare that Arabella would now use to pervert whatever relationship she had with Carolyn into something dark and twisted and poison her against her own mother. Liz could already see the battle lines being drawn between half-sister and half-sister over Elizabeth's love, something she was always dreading.

Elizabeth calmly folded the forms back into the envelope and stood up. She walked over to a small bureau and pulled out the top drawer, she place enveloped inside and reached over to the right side of the drawer and gripped the handle of a small hand gun.

The gun felt hot in her hand. It was like picking up a embers from a fireplace. She held it, still inside the drawer ready and loaded to pull it on Arabella before Arabella spoke again.

"You can do something about it however. I'm  not entirely cold-hearted. I wouldn't want to come between you and Carolyn, not in the slightest. That is, unless you leave me no choice. There could be a conversation about compensation, however." Arabella said to Liz who still had her back turned and her hand on the gun in the drawer.

"Money. I should have guessed." Liz said, releasing her grip on the gun then turning back to her scheming sister-in-law who had already told Carolyn and was plotting to kill Vicky.

"I think it's what my brother would want. He promised to take care of me." Arabella said.

"Did he now?" Liz said disgusted with Arabella. "How much?"

"A million." Arabella said to an aghast Liz.

"You're out of your mind! How can I give you a million dollars? How would that even look!?"

"It's your money Elizabeth, no one has to know how you spend it. It's a million dollars by the end of this month and I will be out of Collinsport before anyone even asks questions to where I've gone. And I'll take your little 'Vicky' secret with me. Forever." Arabella said, attempting to play both Elizabeth and Carolyn for fools...and so far she was succeeding.

"What's all this?" Roger said, coming in with his own stack of paperwork from the Cannery for Elizabeth to look  over and sign. "A meeting of the minds?" He joked.

"Roggie, always so good to see you. How are things over in the fish-factory?" Arabella asked breaking eye contact with Liz and relishing in the fresh air Roger brought to the tense conversation.

"Fine." Roger replied looking down his nose at Arabella like she were a lower form of blue-blood than he. "So? What's going on? Why are you two so tense? I can feel it in the air." He added as he walked over to fill a drink at the wet-bar.

"Nothing. Your sister and I were just discussing old family tropes. You know, 'how's aunt so and so', 'what did you get your daughter for Christmas', 'where's my brother'. That kind of stuff. Girl talk." Arabella joked.

"Arabella thinks I have information on where Paul went all those years ago, and I've repeatedly told her I do not." Elizabeth said as she walked over to Roger and grabbed the paperwork from Collins Fishing Co.

"Yes, Liz does deny she knows his whereabouts." Arabella said now feeling a strange Collins sibling 2-on-one attacking coming. "At any rate Liz, think about what I said, will you? We'll talk again soon." Arabella then replied with a wink to Liz as she left Liz to go over her million dollar request and left Roger alone with Liz in the private library.

"She makes every inch of my skin crawl with disgust. What did she really want?" Roger asked as the ice in his drink clinked back into place after his deep sip.

"Never mind her." Elizabeth said shaking her head as she flipped through paper work and signed off on things for the fleet.

"Hmmmm.....she has always rubbed you the wrong way sister dear but never to the point where you would open that top drawer." Roger said noticing Elizabeth left open the drawer with her hand gun in it.

"What?" Liz said as she looked up to see her brother was now closing the drawer where he knew a gun was.

He just looked at her with an expression telling her he was waiting for her to spill what was really happening, but ever the secret keeper, in fact the best one in the family, Liz kept it simple.

"Roger, stay out of it. This is between Arabella Stoddard and myself. I only went to that drawer because I ...." Liz paused.

"Listen. Whatever it is, you know you can tell me. You're my sister. We're a team. What did she want and why didn't you just shoot that free-loading harlot in her smug face?" Roger said to Liz's shock.

"Stop it! Go on. Here take this back to the office tomorrow morning and forget what you just told me. Forget you walked in on our tense conversation. Forget it all Roger. Do you understand? You never saw us talking here." Elizabeth said in a state of panic, for she too knew something would have to change before Arabella got what she wanted. And Roger needed to stay clear of any potential wrong doing, for everybody's sake.

Roger pursed his lips and bowed his head like a servant to his queen. He grabbed the the forms Elizabeth had signed and began to make his way out of the room but just before he left he turned back and looked at his sister, back again looking out of the dark draped window into the unknown. He wondered what she was thinking, he wondered what she was, perhaps, plotting. She was deep in thought, deep in trouble and all the tell tale signs pointed to deep in danger.

Roger walked back into the room towards the drawer with the gun, Elizabeth watched him. He pulled open the drawer as it was before, not noticing the new envelope with Vicky's secret studded inside, and looked at Elizabeth.

"Do what you have to do." he said pointing to the open drawer, and the left his sister in the room alone with her mind on the gun in the drawer.

Beau and Carolyn
As the sun began to set and the Atlantic breeze continued to flow over the sea into the town of Collinsport in a frosty fog filled swirl, a beautiful blonde walked along a secluded patch of Widow's Hill called Lookout Point. It's rocky cliff side vista was just a 15 minute walk between the mansion on Widow's Hill and a secondary street that lead down to town. This was an area Carolyn, the beautiful blonde, often came to relieve her stress. She'd look out past the dunes below and out into the great wide ocean and feel the wind blow through her hair. She'd close her eyes and pretend the wind would blow all her troubles away. It was refreshing. It was invigorating. But it wasn't working. Not this time.

She wasn't just up on Lookout Point hoping to rid herself of her problems and the messy world her Aunt Arabella had exposed to her. She was there because she was meeting someone. Someone special. Someone she was falling in love with, but secretly.

As the lighthouse down further out on the point spun around and around and illuminated Carolyn's hair causing a sort of halo after each time the light hit her he appeared. It was Beau Cielvert.

Carolyn's handsome stranger was the same man who was also at the center of Arabella's investigation into the disappearance of her father. As soon as he appeared in the misty and darkening sky, she rushed over to him. They embarrassed and kissed deep and passionately.

"I thought I'd be waiting forever." Carolyn said.

"Sorry I had a couple of things to take care of. Did you talk to Arabella?" Beau asked as the lighthouse in the distance again turned Carolyn's hair into a flashing halo.

"I did. She told me everything. When I suggested to her moths ago that you'd be the perfect person to dig up where my father was I had no idea what you'd find out. Vicky! My sister?" Carolyn finally confessed at being the one that put Arabella up to hiring Beau.

"I'm sorry I couldn't find anything more about your dad. As soon as he left town all those years ago his trail ran cold. The stuff on your mother, well, I didn't expect to find anything like that when I went looking." Beau replied feeling strange knowing such a hidden secrets of Carolyn's life before she did.

"Either way, thank you. For all you've done." Carolyn replied in a smile as bright as the light from the lighthouse below.

"Are you going to be ok?" Beau wondered.

"Of course. My Aunt Bella is really the perfect person to handle all of this. She's already on it. She's got a plan to make sure that truth is told and that..." Carolyn paused, she had forgotten the rest of what Arabella had said, that they should have Vicky killed. It was unsettling to Carolyn. How could she have agreed to that. How could she have even entertained the notion of being involved with something so twisted.

"That what? What else did she say?" Beau asked not realizing the woman he was in love with was plotting a crime.

"Nothing. I mean she's just very much involved and I think she'll handle it all. I just have to take care of a few odds and ends before she makes her next move." Carolyn said, rethinking the entire plot to murder Vicky.

"Carolyn, you don't seem ok." Beau noticed. "I know it's a lot to take in but lots of families have this type of surprise hidden in their family tree. No one is perfect. Maybe your mom just made a huge mistake with Vicky's dad and she's just trying to make up for it by having Vicky around but still  not around--as one of the family. My sister Noelle and I have weird problems in our family too...you know that." Beau said attempting to soften the spiny truths in Carolyn's porcupine of secrets family.

"But Vicky is already apart of the family. My mother adores her, David adores her, apparently my Ex Justin adores her....and to tell you the truth, I kind of like her too. Maybe that's where some of my jealousy is coming from." Carolyn admitted as the wind and light filled her hair.

"I just don't want you to think you're family is any different than anyone else." Beau added.

"Like you and your sister. How is Noelle anyway? It's been a a while since I've talked to her." Carolyn said, remembering her once close friendship with Noelle.

"She's good. You know considering everything that happened to her a few years ago." Beau replied, skimming over his sister's past.

Carolyn thought for a split second as something dawned on her. Noelle Cielvert. Beau's sister. Despite their differences in the past perhaps Noelle could help Carolyn with the Vicky issue....before it was too late. Before Arabella did something they would all regret. Noelle had....gifts. Something inside of her helped her see the world much more clearer than the average person. She was clairvoyant and special. She was a psychic with a profound connection to nature and the world around her. Carolyn and Noelle had a falling out a few years back...but perhaps bygones would be bygones.

"I should go see her soon. I really should. We were friends." Carolyn mentioned, shivering as the wind kissed her exposed skin.

"Listen, it's really cold, why don't you rush back home, get warm and I'll call you later. I'd love to take you out. A real date." Beau said grabbing Carolyn close to keep her warm.

"A real date? Really?" She beamed.

"REALLY!" Beau said gushing as the waves below crashed up against the rocks.

"My mother will flip." Carolyn joked, referring to Elizabeth's picky nature when it came to the men she loved.

"Because ....." Beau said, looking down at himself noting their different in skin tone.

"No, no, no, nothing like that. You're just Joe Haskell, that's all." Carolyn said with a sigh.

"Ah...well, maybe I can be better than Mr. Joe Haskell." Beau said again, pulling Carolyn in close for a kiss just a deep and passionate as the first one.

As Beau pulled away from her, she kept her eyes closed. His mouth still stinging her lips like a happy memory. She opened them again and looked deep into his big dark eyes. She smiled, all the wind and sea air could not take away all her trouble this time, but somehow she felt like Beau could.

"You already are better." Carolyn said comparing Beau to Joe.

****

It was 15 passed 10pm. The house seemed quiet with the exception of Roger busily drinking he 4th highball in the drawing room alone while reading the evening paper. The fire in the hearth crackled and popped with a fever that warmed his whole body, even though he was already warm from the alcohol in rushing through his veins.

India slowly made her way down the dark staircase with her shoes off. As she moved slowly down each step, she could not imagine the terrible plots surrounding her at that very moment. Vicky's life was in danger, and in a very real reality, so was India's as the two woman were so intertwined in body and mind.

Carrying Vicky's shoes in her hand, India slipped passed the drawing room door way as Roger continued to boozily grumble over the news in the paper. India pushed open a door around the corner from the foyer that emptied into a second vestibule lit with only one dim lamp. The walls were covered in a dark ruby red wallpaper and lead down a hall to a doorway that opened into a back patio.

Suddenly India's head began to spin. Her mind began to grow foggy.  She heard a voice say:

"I can't breath. .... I can't see! What is happening!??!"

It was Vicky, deep inside her own consciousness. India could hear her thoughts. Vicky's inner fears were trying to break free from her own mind and split from India...all futile attempts.

India grabbed the back of her neck with her left and and braced herself up against the patio door with her other. She closed her eyes and fell into the darkness.

When she opened her eyes she was standing in a black room---or what seemed like a back room--in her own body and standing before her was Victoria Winters.

"Who are you.... WHERE AM I?!?" Vicky screamed into the black void that was her own consciousness.

"Vicky....please ....please calm down. You and I have to work together. We have to be one to make sure we can get out of this. Together." India said

"How, can you be me and I be you. I just don't understand. How is this happening?" Vicky asked.

"There's a lot to unpack and I just need you to trust me, ok? I'm going to get us out of this, no matter what. I promise." India said.

"But who are you?" Vicky asked, still unsure of what was happening.

"India. I'm India. I'm a friend, it'll all be explained as soon as I find Barnabas." India explained.

The name came out of India's mouth, it felt like a swift punch in the gut. For some reason that name made Vicky freeze in place. She could sense danger. She could sense darkness, she was feeding off of India's emotions, they minds were so intertwined that Vicky knew that who ever Barnabas was, meant incredible danger was near.

"Please help. Bring me back." Vicky said as her body began to fade back into the dark corners of her mind.

India opened her eyes, Vicky's eyes and she was back on the patio. The dizziness was gone. And Justin was waiting.

India hurried through the patio where Justin was standing just outside standing against a tree lighting a cigarette in the dark, India only saw his illuminated face as the light from the match touched the cigarette in his mouth.

He whistled for her to hurry and she carefully closed the door behind her and rushed out of the patio to Justin.

"You Ok?" Justin asked looking into Vicky's pale face.

"Vicky contacted me....she wants to be free." India replied to Justin's frightened reaction.

"Do you think we can do this?" Justin wondered.

"We have to....we have no choice. Where'd you park?" India asked in a whisper as she replaced her shoes.

"Just off to the side there." Justin said pointing to a hidden thicket of trees with the hand the cigarette was hanging from.

India watched as the smoke from his cigarette encircled his wrist in swirls of gray smoke. She snickered and grabbed the cigarette out of his hand and threw it to the ground.

"These are gross!" She hissed.

Justin looked at her like she had three heads, India quickly realized that in 1966, cigarettes weren't all together seen the same way as they were in 2019. She smiled shyly and mouthed "Sorry."

"Let's just get to this cemetery already... before I change my mind." Justin said flipping the collar of his leather jacket and rushing India to his awaiting car.

The two drove in silence all the way to Eagle Hill cemetery. They didn't know what to say to each other. They didn't know what they were even doing, or what they'd even be looking for. David mentioned the Collins mausoleum, and jewels and treasures the dead family members may have been buried with. India, for sure, had no idea exactly what Barnabas had hidden in the family mausoleum, could it be a clue to where he was, or was he there himself. The fear and uncertainty of it all silenced both Justin and India the whole way to Eagle Hill.

And just as the fog began to settle low on the town below, the arrived to a gated off old cemetery that even in the hottest of summers would chill a person to their very core.

Justin and India again hid Justin's car in a low lying tree and carefully made their way through the blacked out cemetery. As they walked India couldn't help read the names of some of the people buried there and the years they lived, and especially the years they died....all the same years.

India felt a sinking feeling in the pit of hers stomach. It was like she was going to throw up, she could feel something coming up. Her nerves were on edge. Her heart was pounding. Those names. All those names. And just as she through they'd never arrive, Justin stopped her in her tracks. India took her eyes off of the names from the ground and looked up at a Gothic style gated Mausoleum with the name COLLINS etched in stone above the gate entrance.

The fog surrounded them like two giant arms pulling them in close. The night air was cold and wet, India tightened the belt on her coat and took a gulp of the ice cold Atlantic sea air that tasted like salt.

"You ready?" Justin asked grabbing her by the hand.

"I don't know." India replied.

"It's now or never. The quicker we get in there the quicker we find clues as to what Barnabas' next plan is." Justin answered. India agreed and squeezed his hand before letting it go.

She walked slowly to the gate, her hands gripped the lock and she pulled hard shaking the gate causing the chains to rattle in the wind.

"No key?" Justin asked.

India wasn't giving up. She had to get in that mausoleum ---that night. India then reached into the half up pony tale of her hair and pulled out the bobby-pin that was holding it up releasing Victoria's thick locks of black hair down to her shoulders. India then pulled one arm of the bobby-pin up and the second down creating a two pronged took that she shoved into the lock of the gate. She began to twist and turn and twist and turn the bobby-pin with all she had in her.

"Do you know what you're doing?" Justin wondered in a whisper.

And before India could answer, the lock snapped open.

"I guess I do." she said in a shocked voice.

The two then slowly made their way into the mausoleum both shaking from the cold and from fright. Up the steps they went crunching along each step on the dead leaves that had fallen from the trees that swayed in the wind and fog above.

The door was unlocked. There was no key. There was no one there. No one to keep out. But was there someone to keep in?

"Look." Justin said as they entered, pointing to the three solid stone coffins.

India's eyes watered. She had no idea what she was getting herself into. All she wanted was to find Barnabas and get him to remove her from Vicky's body and send her back to her own time. Everything else was just noise, she had to keep telling herself that. None of it would last. Not the fear. Not the terror. Not the darkness that surrounded this whole situation. She needed to get it over with. She slowly made her way to the headstones on the main wall of the mausoleum but was suddenly disappointed.

"Joshua, Naomi, Sarah." She said to Justin.

"So where do you think all this information, or documents are buried?" He replied rushing over to her to read them as well.

"We have to look inside..." India answered cryptically.

As the two contemplated opening up the three coffins, a loud howl came from just beyond stone structure's stained glass windows. It was loud, and chilling and felt as if it made their blood turn to ice.

"Jesus." Justin said, as the goose-bumps began to cover his arms.

A tickle went up India's spine too. She sat down on Joshua's stone sarcophagus and buried her face in her hands she couldn't believe what she was about to do. She couldn't bring herself to try and open these stone cases up to see if there were any information buried with the deceased. How could things have turned to this?--she wondered, How could she have gotten to this point?

"Listen, we just started this... We just started. I know it seems horrible and sick but we can't give up now. We're going to get you back to normal and back to your own time. Or....maybe...." He said before pausing.

"What?" She asked, looking up at him with a tear-stained face.

"Maybe you can stay here. In this time. I would....you know, I could take care of you. I know who you really are. I believe you're India. I'd help you for as long as you need me." Just replied, the chivalrous 60's young man showing his softer side.

India smiled and put her hand on his face caressing him...she felt a small hint of hope with his words,  but she knew that could not be. That was not Barnabas' plan. It could not have been.

"Justin I can't. I stay here. This is all wrong." She said, he smiled and nodded his head and digressed. "I have to believe that David sending us here was for a reason and we have to find it out why. This has to be it. This has to be the place that will tell us how to find Barnabas." India continued as she stood up.

"Alright, so where do we start? Do we open these up?" He wondered.

"Let's look around first, maybe there's something else, a hidden drawer, a smaller private box...something else." India hoped, the idea of grave robbing still unsettling in her mind.

The two began to pore over the interior of the mausoleum, every inch, every corner carefully pulling up on things to see if they lifted, or pushing things over to see if they fell revealing a secret passages they even pushed up against walls to hopefully, discover a false one. Justin finally pushed so hard on the back wall the moved slightly dropping dust on his shoes and to the ground.

"Here.....this one.... this is it! INDIA LOOK!" Justin explained showing her the tiniest movement in the wall.

"Will it budge anymore than that???" She asked in excitement.

The two began pushing and pushing and pushing on the wall but nothing moved. Nothing could get it to move. Then it clicked. It must not be able to move unless something triggered it to move.

"It has to have some sort of lock or...or latch." Justin said as he looked up. And just like that there was the face of lion with a ring in its mouth. Justin pulled the ring.

With the ring still firmly in Justin's hand, the false wall that held up the plaque with Naomi Collins' epitaph moved and revealed a staircase that lead down deep under the cemetery. India gasped and quickly latched herself on to Justin's body as his eyes grew like two giant silver dollars.

"Come on." He whispered.

As the two descended down the dark staircase made of cold hard stone they began to pass torches that were placed on the sides of the secret walls below. With every torch they passed the one in front of them sparked a flame on their own illuminating the way for Justin and India to follow as they pushed away cobwebs and dust that fell from above.

The dark staircase finally led into a dark circular chamber deep below the cemetery.  Suddenly, as if commanded to do so, five torches hanging in the room sanctimoniously lit one by one in bursts of fire like the snapping of fingers revealing the chained coffin of Barnabas Collins.

India could feel the ring around her neck become warm. It was so warm it began to burn her skin. She pulled it out of  her blouse and it was glowing a very dim light only around the Onyx in it's center.

"This.........this must be....it...." India said staring down at the Coffin. "This must be where Barnabas is."

They looked at each other, searching for the other to say what to do next as the howl again came from outside, this time echoing over and over again inside the buried layer where the Coffin lay.

"Ok...do it. Do it." Justin said, his eyes still wide with fear. "Unlock him."

India was shaking. She had no idea what she was doing. She quickly reached in her pocket and pulled out the warped bobby-pin and twisted the old locks around the Coffin. Each one snapped is if they were made in 1966 and not from the 18th century. It was as if these locks had been waiting for India all this time.

The chains suddenly fell to the ground all and coiled up in three small neat circles just under the coffin all on their own. India screamed and backed away at the sight of the chains moving on their own, and just as she did, the lid of the Coffin lifted up slowly.

The lid, creaked open, like a dark evil clam shell....Inch by inch.

"Jesus!" Justin said again, his heart pounding in his ears.

And just as the moon lifted high in the sky at it's most center place of the night---midnight, Barnabas Collins levitated from his eternal sleep, deep inside his purple velvet lined coffin. He stood up and  turned his head to the right and stared India dead in the eyes.

"Thank you, child." He said with a small quiver of a fancy accent.

"Barnabas." She said, finally putting the man to the face in the painting.

Barnabas stepped out of the coffin by levitating again through the air, he bowed his head then walked over to India and snapped the necklace from her neck, removed the ring and placed it firmly on his hand --once again connecting all his forces in one being.

"Please...please send me back now, send me back home now! Please!!!" India begged.

"In due time. You have no idea just how much danger you are in, do you?" Barnabas said.

"This can't be real. I can't be seeing this!" Justin said, his panic becoming more and more intense.

"I am real. I've been real. And I will be real. Forever. What you two have done is set in motion a correction of the past. Something I should have done decades ago. What you two have done, for me, is release me before I was set to be released in real time. Because of you and your hard work getting me out before my original time by a man named Loomis, I can now reverse course ....change the future....do good things. I can set the curse backwards and instead of perpetuating the devil inside our family I can cure it. I will be the cure to our own demise. But all that is because of you India. I chose you. I chose you specifically to do this for me, for us." Barnabas explained now holding Vicky's face in his hands, but speaking to India who was locked inside of her.

"Why me? Why in Vicky's body? Why this time?" She asked, tears in her eyes.

"The family in 1966...I feel as though was where the most damage was done. Elizabeth, David...Carolyn, even Roger and most especially Victoria. The others from my past...." Barnabas said scoffing about thinking of his father, his mother and his devious uncle, "Well let's just say they're too far gone. It's too late for them. I can't turn that clock back. But here, Here I can."

"But why put me in Vicky's body???" India asked again, tears streaming down Vicky's perfect face.

"India, your future and real body does not exist in 1966. Over the years I have learned that moving through time in a body that does not belong in that period causes more trouble than you can imagine. It causes a tear in the time fabric that I've discovered causes the more holes for the future. The many times I have traveled back an forth in time with someone from the future I had no idea of this....it was one reason there was so much more danger and treachery when I returned to the correct time. The body from the future had broken that sacred bond between time and space where foreign bodies do not belong. Putting your future made body in a body like Victoria's that belonged here secured that this tear in time did not occur." Barnabas explained.

"Ok, Fine....that's fine.  Now you're done. Right? Now I can go back. Now you can send me back and free Vicky." India replied impatiently.

"Not  yet." Barnabas answered as the distant animal again howled it's cruel howl.

"Why Not!???" India exclaimed.

"Your purity and new place among this family is the energy and source of my salvation. I need you. I cannot part from you yet. Until this curse is dead and gone you cannot return, and there is a bounty on your Victoria's head. Destroying this threat and correcting my various mistakes in the time will finally rid this family of one of this many curses healing their future generations, which includes you India. I must and will, eliminate the attempt on Vicky's life first. Then you India may go." Barnabas said referring to Arabella's plot to kill Vicky, that he supernatural overheard through his painting on the foyer wall.

India and Justin were in shock. They had no idea what to do next. Barnabas grabbed his cane from his coffin and smiled at them with a grin that seemed coy, conniving, untrustworthy. But India had no choice. She had to follow him. She knew that one way or another Barnabas would get his way and the only chance she'd get at returning home was to follow his lead.

Justin grabbed India's had as Barnabas began his assent up the dark staircase up to the surface.

"Are you going to be ok with this ....guy??" He questioned.

"I have to. I can't stop him now. Whatever he's planned to right all his wrongs and remove this...this...bounty on me...or Vicky--whatever that means, I have to do it. I have to let him take control now. It's my only way home." India said.

"What about Julia? You said that maybe she would be able to help you too." Justin asked reminding her of her other plan.

"I can't think of her now. I have to ....trust Barnabas. It may be too late." India said, feeling hopeless and having to wait for Barnabas to correct it all himself.

"Trust? I .... how can you..." Justin replied, his heart and mind both refusing to even entertain trusting the man he saw come out of coffin.

"We just have to Justin. Trusting Barnabas is all I have right now." India said in Vicky's voice.

"Trust me. You can trust me, we can figure this out without him. I know that you're scared but your other plan, to meet with Julia..." Justin said holding India's arm before a deep echoed voice came from the dark stairwell.

"Do not straggle behind. We have no time to lose." Barnabas' disembodied voice echoed.

Justin was worried. He didn't know what to do next, but he knew that he would do anything for India. Anything to keep her safe. Anything to show her  how much he was beginning to care for her. Even if it meant following Barnabas Collins to the open mouth of an early grave.

Series 12/Chapter 3: A WICKED EAR LISTENS CLOSE

Arabella sets a trap for Carolyn

The wind is a powerful force that carries with it the sounds of everything it touches. The sounds of the rustling trees, the sound of the sea waves crashing against black rocks, the sounds of seagulls calling out to their friends from across a blank sky of gray. The wind, is itself listening, collecting tiny little secrets from nature and bringing it to our ears.

Secrets, you see, flow like the wind.

At the Blue Whale pub, secrets not only flow like the wind, they flow like the beer: bubbly and cold ready for complete consumption. Inside, the loud ruckus of the music blared in the early evening hour just in time to welcome the men of the fishing fleets from across Frenchmen Bay in their plump dark sweaters that smelled of the salty sea.

Arabella Stoddard, the San Francisco socialite and Paul Stoddard's sister, walked in with her fur-coat covering her shoulders while her free hands clutched the peach purse at her waist. She looked around the busy pub, all eyes were on this beautiful stranger. The fishermen gazed at her like she was this glowing goddess, and Arabella couldn't be less amused. Her eyes were scanning the  bar for someone else, not the rough-around-the-edges fishermen of Collinsport, Maine.

With her stiff upper lip and turned up nose frozen in snobbish attitude, Arabella spotted her date:  A detective she had hired long before she arrived on the Maine shores just a week before. After a few seconds of pretending no one was staring at her, she saw a man in the furthest booth  who waved her over.

It was a detective, Collinsport native: Beau Cielvert.

"Bella, so good to see you." Beau said as he stood up for Arabella once she approached his table. He was tall man  of French-Creole background with a bright white smile. His hair cut very short to his scalp and eyes that seemed to look through her, his intense nature was a perfect attribute for his detective job.

"Thank you, likewise." Arabella replied as she kissed him once on each cheek. "I'd like to make small talk, but really would love to get down to what you know about my brother's disappearance and what, if anything, Elizabeth had to do with it." she added.

"So you don't want to know about Victoria Winters?" Beau replied.

"The governess, of course! When I heard Liz say her name I instantly thought about the name mentioned to me in your research connecting Liz to some Vicky...obviously something is going on there." Arabella asked confused Beau would bring her up.

"What'll ya have doll?" a random barmaid asked in a thick east-coast accent that no one could quite place.

"Sorry?" Arabella said straining to understand her.

"To drink, hon, whatdaya want?" The barmaid asked again.

"Just some wine. White." Arabella replied to the annoyed barmaid. "Go on Beau."

"The situation about Paul is still rather grey. We only know the last time he was seen in Collinsport." Beau explained.

"Almost 20 years ago, yes." Arabella replied confirming she remembered.

"Since then, there were no sightings of him, which could mean a lot of things. But the strange thing about it is, the way he left. No one can really say how...not by car, not by train. There's absolutely no trace of him after the last day he was seen, actually, right here in this bar." Beau explained further.

"Elizabeth said the last day she saw him they had some sort of fight." Arabella added.

"Right but a fight about money, that's what the police report says. The problem with that is that most of Paul's money is actually Elizabeth's money. Paul didn't have money."

"There's no use in slandering the Stoddard name, Beau, I know very well how much money our family has lost over the years." Arabella replied hinting at embarrassment over the lost fortunes of the Stoddard clan.

"He was gambling away Collins money." Beau said.

Aarabella rolled her eyes and smacked her tongue against her teeth in disgust. "Just like daddy." She said.

Arabella knew that the Stoddards weren't cash rich anymore, in fact she herself had married for money three times, and three times she was widowed and without children and gained all three of her former husbands fortunes, making her a very wealthy person. But her brother, her brother's crushed manhood by the fact that his wife's family were the bread-winners raised all sorts of questions around the posh inner-circles of New England society, mainly why on earth would Elizabeth Collins marry Paul Stoddard? Everyone knew Paul lived off of the backs of his wife's name and that bothered him his whole life, no matter  how many times Arabella tried to make him swallow his male pride about it.

"If we're going in the direction that Paul left or disappeared over issues involving money, and that Elizabeth had him bumped off because of that, well that wouldn't make sense--again the money is all hers. It would probably be the reverse." Beau added.

"Well then, if Elizabeth isn't already the number one suspect then what did you wanted to tell me. What is all this about Victoria Winters? Where does she fit in?" Arabella asked.

Beau smirked.

"Like I said money wouldn't have been a motive for Paul to just suddenly vanish off the face of the earth but if he discovered a very dark secret that involved Elizabeth and she didn't like the fact he knew it...well, perhaps that would be it." Beau replied as the barmaid dropped off Arabella's wine.

"Enjoy doll." The barmaid quipped with a wink.

"Beau, I'm not paying you to have meetings with me in grubbing fishy bars to tell me about hypotheticals. What do you know?" Arabella demanded in frustrated reach for her wine.

Beau reached into a leather briefcase that sat on the seat in the booth next to him and pulled out a thick manila folder with papers inside. He opened the folder and laid it out like a book on the table for Arabella to see for herself.

It was a secretly voided out birth certificate of a baby girl named Victoria Collins born just three years before Carolyn.

"Mother: Elizabeth Collins, Father....unknown." Arabella read aloud.  "Where did you get this?"

"I had it subpoenaed by court order from that foundling home by a friend of mine that works for the Southern District of New York. This was Victoria Winter's original birth certificate that her foundling home had on file for her. That place was given $45,000 to order a second one three days after Vicky arrived there as a baby,  the second one removes the mother's information." Beau explained showing a second birth certificate with the word SURRENDER in the Mother and Father boxes. Then he pulled out a copy of cancelled check worth $45,000 marked with Elizabeth's signature.

Arabella's eyes lit up as soon as the smoking-gun in the form of a signed check fell to the table.

"This....this is it. My brother must of found out somehow that Liz had some bastard child running around New York and, well Jesus Christ, of course, if this baby is really Liz's." Arabella said connecting the dots. Then something dawned on her "Vicky older than Carolyn.... that means her share of the Collins fortune would be larger should Elizabeth die."

"How do you know that?" Beau asked.

"It's a blue-blood type of thing, the elder child always inherits more of the pie. Carolyn could be robbed blind of her rightful inheritance. Paul must of been furious when he found this out." Arabella guessed.

"Could be. But what's it to you? Why are you so worried about what Carolyn gets or doesn't get? Not that it matters, Elizabeth Stoddard seems pretty healthy to me." Beau added, still unsure how it all stacked up for Arabella.

"Physically perhaps, but Liz's lights aren't all one upstairs, if you know what I mean." Arabella said insulting Elizabeth's mental state.

"Again, I ask you" Beau said somewhat amused, "What's it to you?"

Beau could see the wheels in her mind starting to turn. Even though he had only known her since she hired him to uncover whatever it was she felt Elizabeth was hiding a month ago, he knew enough of her personality to realize that with everything attached to Arabella, even in small amounts, was enough for her to get involved.

"My brother meant a lot to me." She said with a smile. "And, Carolyn is his only child. I have to protect her."

"Protect her." Beau repeated. "She's not a minor. She can deal with this herself." He added.

Arabella knew this, but the artist of manipulation and coercion that she was, she knew that there were only a few steps between her and Carolyn's inheritance, two steps that she was not afraid to take.

"Don't you worry about the details, I'll take it from here." She replied slyly.

As the two continued to work over the twist in Paul's story involving Victoria, a regular face from town stepped into the Blue Whale ready for a light drink during happy hour after a long at work day: Roger Collins.

Roger's eyes, hungry for the appeal of a younger lady scanned the Whale but found no suitors. Bored with the whole idea, and no pretty ladies to chat up, he turned and began to make his way out, but then saw Arabella in the corner.

His curiosity peaked. He turned back and sat down at the bar.

"What'll ya  have Mr. C? Same?" The bartender asked.

"Yes, please. Also, who's that man sitting over there with my sister-in-law?" He asked, trying his best to hide his face.

"Is that your sis in law? Small world 'ain it? The guy, I don't know. Came in to town about two weeks ago. He's been in and out, said he had some things to work on for someone. Before the pretty lady joined him just now I'd never seen them together." The bartender replied as  he handed Roger his drink.

Roger, ever the eager and nosy man slapped a $5 bill on the bar, flung his coat over his suited arm and slowly made his way over to Arabella and Beau's table like a tiger stalking it's prey from deep behind long blades of Savannah grass. He carefully stepped through the crowd of bearded fishermen laughing and chatting through their sun tanned faces and finally bounded up to the table with a sip of his drink and a smart smirk on his face: the cat that caught the canary.

"Slumming it with the men of town, I see." Roger said.

"Roger, well, I see we're starting early." Arabella said referencing Roger's un-paced drinking.

"I work for a living Bella, this is my pay off. Who's this?" Roger shot back noting Arabella's riches were inherited.

"I was just leaving Mr. Collins." Beau said quickly sliding out of the booth.

"So you know my name but I don't know yours. Seems a bit unfair. Who are you?"

"Roger, just sit down and shut up. This is a friend of mine from San Francisco. He stopped over in Collinsport on his way to Boston." Arabella answered.

"Seems a bit out of the way to come all the way to Maine, but I digress." Roger said knowing full well it was a lie and just as Beau smiled nervously.

"I'll be in touch." Beau said, as his job was to never been seen by objects of his investigation, and Roger was clearly a marked too close for comfort.

"Alight, he's gone, you can be honest with me now, who was he?" Roger asked again.

"I already told you, a friend. That's all." Arabella said, shoving the papers Beau gave her into her purse under the table.

"You know it's not good to keep secrets with family, and although I tried to tell my sister that getting herself tangled up with anyone with the last name Stoddard was a mistake, we are family none the less. That being said, I often have strange feelings about you Arabella, and this just adds to the pot." Roger shot back, unforgiving of Arabella's dismissive behavior.

"You've always had strange feelings about me? Well a crush is nothing to call strange." Arabella smirked.

"Oh Please!" he growled.

"Oh Roggie, we were so, so close once." Arabella said, her eyes twinkling in the dim light of the bar, a quick reference to a drunken one-night-stand they had when they were much younger.

"Ugh...we were both a mess. You know it. I know it. It meant nothing." Roger gagged.  "Listen, I don't appreciate you coming to town and causing any more stress on my sister's life. She's dealt with it enough coming from your brother and I can already see just how must dust you're attempting to blow with Carolyn as well, whatever web you've woven, be sure you that anything you trap in it stays dead, because if anything comes up and I find out about it, you'll wish you never stepped foot in Collinsport." Roger warned.

"So feisty. I like it." Arabella grinned as she sipped her white wine.

Roger scoffed and gathered his things. He felt his warning was clear enough. He got up at the table and looked down at Arabella still sending him a sultry smile, he downed his drink and dropped the glass on the table in front of her in a thunk and bounded out of the bar to his awaiting driver outside.

Arabella's flirtatious grin quickly diminished, of course it was all a rouse to throw off Roger's poking around. He saw her now with Beau and this would mean he would stop at nothing to figure out who he really was--- a private detective-- & Arabella's connection to a private detective would not go over well at Collinwood.

Arabella sipped the last of her white wine and carefully pulled out the papers on Vicky's true family from her bag and read them over again.

"They won't get away with this, Paul. None of them. I'll make sure every last Collins gets their dues. But first---nosy Roger."

****

After late afternoon lessons of math and geography ended, India, in Victoria's body, took David on a walk through town to not only clear his mind, but hers as well. She was often distracted in their times together. Her mind never fully integrated in the lesson of the day. David would remark on how distant she was, how strange and preoccupied she seemed to be when chatting with him about their school work over the last few days. This walk, usually helped clear her mind of the things that were happening to her.

As the late afternoon overcast sky crept over the small village of Collinsport, "Vicky" and David, hand in hand, began to make their way back to the car India borrowed from Elizabeth when she noticed the car she rode in when she first arrived to down in the middle of the night. It was parked over in the parking lot across form her at the Inn's cafe: Justin Patterson's car.

"David, come!" India said pulling his hand over to cross the street.

"Why are we going in there?" He said to his future daughter inside the body of Vicky Winters.

India didn't answer, she only lugged David over and into the busy Cafe. She scanned the room for Justin and saw him sitting at a table with his father, Sheriff George Patterson. Maggie Evans, carrying a large tray for hamburgs and fries for patrons saw Vicky's tall beautiful body standing in the doorway with David and instantly called out to them.

"Early dinner for two? Sit any where! I'll be right with you!"

Maggie's attention to the new guests caused the others already at their tables to glance over at the beautiful brunette and David, who they all knew was the youngest member of the strange family from Widow's Hill. Justin looked up too but not realizing India was Vicky, gazed back down at his meal.

"I don't know if I'm hungry." David said pouting as they sat at a table and he opened a sticky diner menu.

"Get whatever you want, Mrs. Johnson is off today." India replied, trying to figure out how to get Justin's attention and to tell him she was really India.

"Anything? Even a banana split for dinner?" David joked.

"Sure...whatever you want I don't care." India replied as David's 10 year old eyes turned into huge happy balls of hazel colored happiness.

"Winters right? I remember you, I called you a weirdo or a jerk or something. I wanna apologize for that." Maggie said as she tucked her tray under arm.

"What?" India replied, not having any of Vicky's memories.

"The other day, when you got to town. Remember? We met." Maggie said surprised how quickly the woman she believed was Victoria had forgotten her. "Well, I guess a few days up on Widow's Hill in the Collins' presence you forget the little people in town. Maybe I was right, maybe you are a jerk."

"Oh! Yes, of course, I'm sorry. I've been a little off lately. Don't even think twice about what you said, let's pretend I forgot." India replied truthfully in Vicky's voice, clearly trying to calm the waters with someone she thought could be an ally.

Maggie smiled a toothy grin feeling her apology was accepted and took David's order and waited for India who wanted nothing only a quick moment with Justin who she hoped could help her get to Julia Hoffman.

As India ran various scenarios on how to talk to Justin, she looked over and saw his father wipe his mouth and quickly get up from his meal and patted Justin on the shoulder and rushed out of the cafe. Justin was now alone, this was now India's moment.

India took a deep breath and told David not to move an inch and to eat his banana split quietly once Maggie brought it over. She gulped a breath of air nervously and walked over to Justin who was just finishing up with a quick drink of coffee.

"Excuse me, can I sit for a second." India said in Vicky's soft voice.

Justin, unsure of who she was but guessed correctly that she was the new governess since he recognized David smiled and welcomed her to sit.

"What can I do for you?" He asked with a handsome and polite smile.

"Do you remember meeting...." India began before being interrupted by Maggie.

"All set?" the waitress asked, trying to overhear what Justin and Vicky could be talking about.

"All set." Justin said, confused because this was the second time Maggie had asked. It was clear to him that Maggie was fishing for gossip.

Maggie smiled and walked over to David and gave him his banana split. India continued.

"A few days ago, you met someone over by Collinwood. A young lady. Do you remember?" India said keeping her voice down.

Justin looked at Vicky in shock, no one had remembered India, only him. This governess, this woman with dark hair and beautiful eyes suddenly shook his little world by having this memory too, only the truth was SHE was the girl he met just trapped in another person's body.

Equally as cautious with his words, Justin replied that he did remember her.

"What do you know about her? Where did she go? What did the Collins family do to her? She just vanished and no one seems to remember her. Not even Maggie, and Maggie remembers everyone."

"I don't know how this is going to sound or if you'll even believe me, but.....I am her. She is me. Somehow...I ....I just all of a sudden left your car and came into this body. Justin I'm trapped inside this woman." India explained to a confused and somewhat frightened Justin but his fear quickly turned to upeset.

"That's not funny. I don't know what you heard about me, but playing a trick on me isn't very---" he began before interrupted.

"No, I promise you I'm not trying to trick you. Please believe me, you could be my only hope." She replied.

"Did India put you up to this? This is all some sort of weird joke you're both playing on me. What the fu....no, listen I don't need this kind of....whatever you're trying I won't fall for it ok? I'm not crazy and neither of you are going to make me crazy!" Just explained raising his voice slightly as Vicky tried to calm him and not make a scene.

"I know it sounds like it's a lie, but I swear to you Justin. I swear with everything I have, which right now is nothing, that night as you and I drove to Bangor to find Julia Hoffman the light of that lighthouse did something to me. It transferred me into Vicky's body and now I'm here: trapped. Justin, I still have to get to Julia, I have to find out what this all means. There must be a reason, and only she can help me find the man who can turn this around. The man this ring belongs to." India said pulling the necklace with Barnabas' ring out of her blouse and showing it to Justin.

"The boyfriend ring." Justin said in shock, remembering the joke he teased India with right before she vanished from his car by the power of the lighthouse's light and mostly, the power from Barnabas' ring.

"You remember the ring?!" India exclaimed.

"Yes, India was wearing it just like you are now." Justin replied.

"Justin, please, help me. I swear to you, I am India. You were going to help me get to Bangor to find Julia, please can you still get me there? Can you still help me find Julia?" India said sounding desperate. "Only she knows the secret that can help me find the person this ring belongs to and only he can change things back." She added.

Justin looked deep into Vicky's eyes, he believed her. He believed Vicky, or India, was really trapped in a different body. It was the only way he could reconcile why she vanished, no matter how preposterous it all sounded. He believed it was true. The two women were trapped together, linked, by Barnabas for one mysterious reason or another and they would not be separated unless he was found and India believed that his secret whereabouts would only be revealed by Julia  Hoffman. The link between past and present was too strong not to be a true.

"You really think this Julia will know what to do to help you?" Justin asked.

"There's some sort of secret I haven't figured out yet, and it's the reason he's done this. Something about this connection to this place and time, this Collins secret is why I'm here. Julia is the closest person to him. I do think she can help.

Maggie wasn't the only person trying to listen to the conversation. A second pair of ears had walked up without them noticing and heard half of the thing, but much more successfully than the waitress Maggie.

It was David.

"Collins secret? What secret?" He asked with chocolate staining his cheek.

India gasped, surprised to see her future father standing in front of her. She cleaned his face and told him to go back to their table.

"Fine, but I know a lot of secrets about our family. I guess I'll keep them to myself." David said with a grin.

This sparked Justin and India's attention, India grabbed David's arm and pulled him back to the table.

"Ok. Ok. What do you know? Tell us everything." India said looking deep into her future father's eyes with both her hands on his shoulders.

"Well, whatever you want to know you'll find it at the Collins family mausoleum." David said to a surprised India and Justin.

"A mausoleum???" Justin replied horrified by the suggestion. "A cemetery?"

"Yes!" David exclaimed. "It's the family's most sacred place where there are things buried deep in the walls to keep safe. Like documents, and jewels, and treasure maps. At least that's what I've always heard." David said smirking.

"What kind of documents?" Justin wondered.

"Secret love letters. Maps to treasures. All kinds of stuff. I've been there twice myself but I never had anything with me to break down the cement walls. You know, they say the Jewels that are buried there are pirate jewels." The boy replied excitedly.

"David, go on back to the table, I'll be right over." India said as David complied.

"I don't know about this." Justin told India now that they were alone. "This all seems to be just folk stories the Collins family have lived off of for years."

"But he mentioned documents. What if there really are documents there that can help us find where Barnabas is? No one here seems to know, at least they don't seem eager to talk about it, but if there is a document, a paper trail, explaining where he is, where he's been, that could help us a lot." India replied.

Justin looked at Vicky's face but only saw the equally as beautiful India. It was as if he was actually hearing her voice come out of Vicky's mouth instead of the other way around. There was something about this woman, this India do Arco, that was grabbing at his heart. He was suddenly realizing he would do anything for her. Even break down whatever walls necessary to find this Barnabas person. Even walls in an old mausoleum.

"What about Julia?" Justin asked.

"We'll figure that part out later. Barnabas first." India said switching course.

"Let's do it." He said grabbing her hand and squeezing.

India smiled Vicky's smile, and said she'd make plans with him as soon as she could get a minute away from Collinwood that evening. Justin agreed said he'd be up there within 5 minutes of her call. Together they'd find Barnabas one way or another and hopefully fix everything that had done.

As India, in Vicky's body, and David left the Inn's cafe, Maggie walked over to her friend Justin and shook her head in disbelief.

"What? What now?" Justin said, pulling out cash to pay for his part of the meal.

"I can't believe you're getting involved with someone else up at Collinwood." Maggie replied.

"This isn't the same as Carolyn. Ind---Uh--Vicky--and I are just friends. And She needs me to help her." Justin explained after catching himself almost use the wrong name.

"Help her how?" Maggie asked suspiciously.

"With David. She wants to help him learn some sports to keep him active and she doesn't feel like she can do it, she needs me to help." Justin lied.

"And how did she even know to ask you?" Maggie asked again suspiciously.

Justin had to think fast and connected the dots and replied with his ex-girlfriend's name.

"Carolyn recommended me and David recognized me so Vicky came over to ask. Easy as that. Anyway, thanks Mags, I gotta go." Justin said lying  as he quickly left the Cafe to await India's call.

Maggie crossed her arms and shook her head. She knew it, deep in her blood that Justin was way in over his head, but she had no idea just how much.

Arriving at Collinwood India quickly ushered David inside away from the cold wind that was rushing over the Collinwood grounds like a river of ice cold air. She hung both of their heavy wool coats up on the coat hanger by the door as David ran into the drawing room. India knew time was of the essence, if she wanted to get back to her time, she needed to find and release Barnabas from his cold crypt -- it was  his plan. It had to be.

As India slowly made her way through the foyer she came across Barnabas' 18th century portrait hanging on the wall just off to the side of the main door. She could she Vicky's reflection staring back at her in the darkest parts of Barnabas' portrait. It was Vicky's face she had on. It was Vicky's body she was in. It was Vicky's world she was plunged into and Vicky's destiny that she was somehow mixed with but it was India's mind. It was India's entire future at stake if she did not find the man in this portrait and free herself from the impending doom of a life inside of Vicky's body in 1966.

India closed her eyes---Vicky's eyes---and said a silent little prayer. She had no idea what she would find in that crypt, she had no idea if David even knew what he was talking about but she had to trust it, she had to trust what the universe was handing her. The information David gave her at the Cafe had to be real, it had to be accurate and it had to be what she used to begin her journey home.

After her prayer, India turned to go into the drawing after David, and as she did, Carolyn was standing directly behind her with her arms crossed and a cold look in her eyes.

"Carolyn!" India said in Vicky's voice, surprised to see her so close.

"Vicky." Carolyn replied still seeming cross with India for some reason.

"Where's David? It's time he wash up and get ready for dinner." India replied.

"Dinner? Eat again? David just told me you're both coming from the Cafe in town. Didn't you eat?" Carolyn replied, the tone of her voice saying she was fishing for answers.

"We did, that's right." India replied feeling as if she were going to get the third degree from Carolyn.

"David also mentioned you ran into Justin Patterson. How do you know him?" Carolyn questioned.

"We met when I came to town. The first night." India replied with a sort of half truth. India did meet him the first night, but Justin met her as India  not Vicky. The complication of who's body was who's wasn't the issue at the moment, the issue now was why was Carolyn so cross.

"I know that you're new to town, Vicky, I know that you have a lot on your plate with this family and dealing with my cousin who at his best can be a little monster, at worst, well---I'd let his father describe that. My cousin, when in your care, for which you are being paid, should not be used to lure men into your good graces. That certainly is not why my mother hired you. I can't imagine what lesson you were teaching him while you were....well doing whatever you were doing with Justin. Who, by the way, I hear is seeing a girl named India." Carolyn said, the jealousy seeping from her voice like a leaky sieve and not knowing she was talking to India herself.

"David and I had a day out and ran into Justin, nothing more. I didn't try to lure him into anything. And I didn't use David for that either. I would never do that." India replied appalled at Carolyn's notion.

David peeked from around the corner of the drawing room's great oak doors with wooden squares carved into them. His fingers gripped the door frame so tightly his 10 year old finger nails were turning white; it was as if he were holding on for dear life.

"David, come here, what did you tell Carolyn?" India asked, catching David in the corner of her eye.
David did not move.

"Leave him alone! He's just a boy who told me what you did this afternoon. Listen Vicky, I don't know how they act down in New York City, but you have one job to do here, and that's to help with my cousin and to do what my mother asks of you. In fact, you're the highest paid governess we've ever had here. So my advice is for you to leave Justin Patterson alone." Carolyn scolded.

"Justin and I are just friends, Carolyn. That's it. But from the sense of this conversation this seems to be more about Justin and myself than it is about David. If there is something between you and Justin, trust me, I have no intention of being the person that comes between it." India informed.

"They're not together anymore." David said from his not-so-good hiding place in the door way.

"David!! Go upstairs!" Carolyn scratched as David rushed passed the two dueling divas in the foyer.

"I see." India said, turning towards the front door and being faced with Barnabas' portrait again, seeing Vicky's reflection one again in the black parts of the picture.

"Ok. I admit it. Perhaps I was a bit jealous. Justin and I were ....well, we were steady for a good two years and just recently he broke it off and I've had a hard time dealing with it. But I'm warning you about him, Vicky, he's a heart-breaker." Carolyn replied, her voice now calmer but still the reason for the break-up hidden behind a veil of secrets.

India didn't care about what Carolyn's love troubles. She only wanted to get home. She only wanted Justin's help to get to Barnabas and release him so that he could finally set her free and back to 2019. The entire melodrama of Carolyn's love live was just another layer to the whole bizarre story. But India knew she had to play along, the time warp wasn't allowing for her to confess that she was really India from 2019 and not Vicky from 1966.

India knew, if she tried to fight the course and events of what was happening to her right there and right then, she could alter the future. The break in thread in time could be catastrophic. India took a deep breath, filled Vicky's lungs with fresh air and bit down on the proverbial bullet.

"You're probably right. I don't want anything to do with Justin, but perhaps he was trying with me. Trust me Carolyn, there will be nothing with Justin. Nothing at all." India replied to Carolyn who at face value pretended to believe her new family governess.

"Alright." Carolyn said with a lifted brow as India flashed Vicky's megawatt smile and rushed up the main staircase after David.

In the foyer, Carolyn rolled her eyes at her own behavior and at her own rude way of handling something that technically she shouldn't have been worried about. She felt awful with how her jealousy of Vicky came off, it wasn't Vicky's fault. None of it was. But inside, Carolyn could not control what she felt for Justin and how she was dealing with what really happened between them.

All of Carolyn's relationships ended this way, whether it were with Justin or Joe or...any of them. Carolyn couldn't connect. She couldn't let go of her own hangups that caused her to constantly be cold and distant to the men she loved and when they moved on to someone new, Carolyn jealousy peaked. It was a cycle she repeated over and over again.

The truth was simple: Two years ago Carolyn came between two friends. Her boyfriend at the time Justin and the man she would cheat on him with Joe Haskell. She felt so much guilt inside for coming between two friends like Justin and Joe, and the truth was because of her deceit and her lies to keep her secret cheating under wraps, she eventually lost them both. Carolyn's life was in such tatters that she would lash out at anyone who threatened her, but there was another serpent who was willing to play off of this pain, her aunt Arabella Stoddard who had been listening to the argument from a side door that lead to the dining room the whole time.

"Darling." Arabella said softly with a face that showed she heard the whole thing and slowing making her way from the shadowy corner of the room where the dining room door was.

"Aunt Bella!" Carolyn said, noticing Arabella had heard it all. "Where you eavesdropping?"

"I'm sorry honey, I heard people chatting and I wanted to come and visit with you all too but I had no idea what I was walking in on, I didn't mean to." Arabella said lying, she loved every minute of it. "But It's good that I did."

"Why's that?" Carolyn questioned.

"You know that I've been working hard on trying to find out what happened to your father, and I've come here for that specific reason. Well, in the hopes to discover what happened to him, I've discovered something else." Arabella began.

"I don't understand." Carolyn replied as the two made their way into the dimly lit drawing room where a fire cast an orange glow around the entire wood paneled room.

"I think you should sit down." Arabella instructed.

"You're scaring me Aunt Bella, what is it?"

Arabella pulled out a small envelope that she had folded the paperwork Beau had given her about Vicky's connection to the Collins family. Arabella then handed it to Carolyn and lifted the lip of the envelope up so that the papers were exposed. Carolyn looked at Arabella confused and pulled out the paperwork.

"I hired a private detective named Beau Cielvert," Arabella began, Carolyn knew the name well. "he was supposed to help me uncover what happened to Paul. Your mother hasn't been very helpful in discussing his whereabouts and I, for the life of me, can't figure her out. I hope you're not hurt that I did this, but I needed to find out what happened to my brother--your father." Arabella explained.

"No, of course not, I understand and actually I'm very grateful to you for doing this. My mother hasn't been herself in years. She's barley even left this house. I can't get a straight word about daddy's vanishing or anything. Even Uncle Roger can't figure it out. Are these papers information about where daddy is?" Carolyn asked.

"No, honey." Arabella said, her face forcing a sad reaction  but in truth Arabella was thrilled of the secret she uncovered.

"What is it?"  Carolyn began to unfold the paperwork without another word from Arabella who let the secret reveal itself to the one ally she truly needed.

The truth of Vicky being Elizabeth's daughter, and thus Carolyn's half sister slowly began to seep into Carolyn's mind as she read what Arabella had discovered. Dots were being connected and Carolyn's eyes began to well up in tears.

"This can't be true." Carolyn said in a hushed voice over the crackling fire as she tossed the papers to on the soft green sofa.

"I'm afraid it is, darling. But this is where we can take things back. This is where you and I step in and make sure that the truth is told and that the people involved in this....this...horrible cover up and lie are exposed. This is an attempt to take what's yours darling!" Arabella explained.

"To take what's mine? What are you talking about?" Carolyn questioned as she wiped a tear from her perfect face.

"Victoria is older than you darling and she is Elizabeth's daughter. That means the lion's share of your mother's trust of the Collins fortune will go to her once your mother dies. Why do you think Vicky is here? It's not because she wants to be some governess to a strange child in a mansion, not at all, she wants her money. Don't you see? Your mother is trying to cut you out. She's pushing her hatred of my brother on to you and choosing her bastard daughter instead to be her heiress! We cannot let this stand. You are a Collins AND a Stoddard! This family's name will go on through your blood too, Victoria---well who the hell knows what kind of man her father was. Clearly someone that your mother couldn't bare bringing a child into this world and raising. She had to push her away... but she wants her back into this fold, into this world. Vicky's appearance is no coincidence my love, your future is in jeopardy." Arabella explained, her whole motivation now switching from finding Paul Stoddard to saving Carolyn's future as the heiress of Elizabeth's half of the Collin's fortune.

"I just --- I can't believe this. I can't. How could my mother do this to me? Why would she do this to me? Why would she try to ....this can't be true Aunt Bella. My mother wouldn't do that. She wouldn't blame me for my father's mistakes and disinherit me by bringing her other child into her life. She just wouldn't do that!" Carolyn said standing up  as it if to remove herself from the ick of the conversation.

"She already has. Why would she specially choose Victoria to come here for David and not tell anyone she's her daughter. She's doing it under wraps. I believe that. And you must too, if you don't my darling, I can tell you you'll be out of so much more than you know once Elizabeth has passed." Arabella warned.

Carolyn wasn't sure what was happening. She couldn't even imagine this being true  but Arabella did have good points. It was all happening so fast, and the information that she read was so real and so much, but then, Carolyn's jealousy the twitch in her brain that made her want nothing but to scratch out Vicky's eyes for even being in the same room as Justin Patterson suddenly reared it's head and spoke.

"What do we do?" Carolyn asked to Arabella's delight.

"We have to eliminate her. There's no other way."

"Eliminate?" Carolyn asked, unsure exactly of the meaning.

"She has to die, love. Its really the only way out. If she lives, gets married, has a child, that's it. The money, the life--everything. Everything that that is rightfully yours will be gone into her pockets and to whatever spawn she gives birth to too. It's all for Vicky if that happens. We can't let it. We have to get rid of her. I can take care of it all, you don't have to worry. I just want your blessing." Arabella explained, knowing that eventually Carolyn would be in her debt.

Carolyn turned from her scheming aunt and crossed her arms. She stared off into the burning fire of the hearth and felt an emotion she could not explain if someone had asked her what it was. It was overcoming her like the fire she was staring at, it was rage but with a bit of fear and terror. She could feel an aching in the pit of her stomach, a sign of regret perhaps, but it was too late. She was mentally unable to divorce herself from what was about to happen next. Carolyn agreed to allow Arabella to have Vicky killed and free her of what Vicky could lord over her.

The trap was set. Arabella grinned from ear to ear knowing what would come next. The death of Vicky and a payment from Carolyn to keep her silence. But one set at a time.

As Arabella stepped close to Carolyn and embraced her tightly a loud bang came from the foyer that startled the two Stoddard women in their hug. They rushed into the foyer to find Barnabas' portrait had fallen to the ground.

Where ever he was....he was not pleased at the threat to his own plan Arabella had placed. Now more than ever, Barnabas had to be set free. His plan was in jeopardy and only India, in Vicky's body could save him.

Vicky's Life was at steak and Arabella's plotting was unknowingly putting Barnabas' plans to fix all his wrongs at risk, and thus putting all the lives at Collinwood in danger.
